Timeless Garden Classic...
I have used this book for years as my gardening bible. I have an edition with a foreward signed by James Bush-Brown and Louise Bush-Brown in Ambler Pennsylvania, September 1957. I'm glad to see the book has been updated, but what amazes me is that the older version is still so useful. Just this morning I looked up 'Hyssop' because I planted one in the back of my herb bed. The entry read, "P; 18-24" Seed: medicine, perfume, food -- Sunny; ordinary garden soil, not too rich. Prefers lime." This entry (in Chapter IX, The Herb Garden) told me the plant was a pernnial, would not overshadow my other plants, and would grow well in my herb garden which is laced with lime.

This book is succinct, useful, and too heavy to carry to bed for nighttime reading.

Everything about gardening in a single volume
If I were stranded in a strange garden and could pick only one gardening book to take along, this would be the one. It's loaded with detailed information on all aspects of gardening, including photos and suggestions of exactly which species and varieties will work best in which situations. This is such a comprehensive effort that it's now possible to whittle your gardening library down to one volume and still be able to look up an answer to whatever question's bugging you.

A Child Is Born

Beautiful
My two year old son loves looking at the pictures in this book. The baby looks so real. I was pleased to find a book that is simple enough for a 2 year old to enjoy it and so beautiful that an adult will love reading it as well. My son especially likes the picture of the lovely mother gazing down at her child. Although the art work and Wise's poetry are what make the book enjoyable, the fact that the characters are people of color make this book a must have for our family. Because it seems very unlikely that Jesus was a blonde with blue eyes, I want to present images of a more colorful Jesus to my son. I also appreciate the depiction of many wise men from the East, not just 3.

Stunning illustrations
I borrowed this book from the public library and found that it took my breath away. Author Margaret Wise Brown has done many of what are now considered classics such as RUNAWAY BUNNY,LITTLE ISLAND and GOODNIGHT MOON has one more to add to her collection. The illustrations by Cooper are amazing. The realistic pictures of the newborn baby (which remind me so much of my own sons when they were that small)in the manger are very moving. Some narrow-minded people may be put off by the fact that the main characters are African American and the book "appears" to be depicting the Holy family, although Brown's text does not actually indicate this. I also find it ironic that two different online bookstores that I went to for this title do not actually have the cover displayed. The illustrations depicting angels are absolutely gorgeous. I took the book to work to share it with my co-workers who would appreciate it and they agreed with me. I was very reluctant to take it back because I knew I would not be able to have it over the Christmas holiday. I just have to have this book for my personal collection to share with my two sons. This book celebrates the miracle of life and the joy of two parents gazing upon their son with hopes for the future. I hope this book wins an ALA (Caldecott or Coretta Scott King) award or awards this year.

A Classic
This book is one of my favorites, and has been for many years. Its beautiful color illustrations are grouped by the period and country in which they were created. The book presents works (mostly paintings) from many countries (mostly Western) beginning in the Byzantine era, extending up until the early twentieth century. Many of the works are accompanied by art historical abstracts which offer insight for both the inexperienced and learned art enthusiast. This is a great book to have around as an extensive survey of Western painting.

A profound text allowed to languish out of print!!
I am an artist who has persued the knowledge of classical drawing and painting, (as well as the joys of modern art)for at least a decade, and I believe that along with Robert Beverley Hales masterworks, this great book by Hereward Cooke is one of the most profound I have ever encountered.
It is not one of the typical "how to" art tuition books so prevalent now, those that are really just a sort of long winded advertisement for the artist/writer (and sad to say, often a very embarassing and mediocre ad at that).
This book is not for the hobby painter who just wants a pretty effect. This is a serious and profound study of the thousands of ideas , both simple and subtle, that painters have developed over umpteen generations, and which in the 20th century were almost lost to us. But this is the 21st Century!! Lets learn to match inspiration with inspired technique and understanding. Watson and Guptill really should reprint this gem, REALLY!!

This book is informative, asthetic and well worth the wait. I was fortunate enough to visit the exhibit in Atlanta and this is an incredible keepsake to remember it by.

You be the judge.
This book was preety much like i expected, a display of the greatest architectural works for the last 20 years of the 20th century. As a Rogers, Piano, Gehry and Calatrava admirer the works of other architects that you wer'nt aware of their existance certainly open your eyes, some possibly inspiring, as i know they were for me.

For those people not practicing or learning architecture but admire the beauty, a display of SOME of the worlds most fabulous buildings open your eyes to look beyond the street you live in.

Although this is a fantastic book there are many other fabulous buildings left out, which you would expect. There arn't a lot of images of each building, but how thick can a book be? if you love the guggenheim in bilboa, 5 images certainly arnt going to show you the whole story, as is the same with the getty, or the creativity of calatrava BUY THEIR BOOKS there is so much more to an architect than just one building. How they can award a single prize to someone out of so many masters must be the hardest job in the world.

A must for anyone who enjoys architecture
As a student of architecture who hopes to one day win the Pritzker, this book in invaluable to me. The variety of architecture in this book gives the reader great insight into many different kinds of architecture. It's great even to just flip through the pages and look at the pictures... Of course, the written content is also very insightful and enjoyable to read. This book inspires you to learn more about the 20 architects featured in the book, as well as the future winners of Pritzker Award.

I love this book!
I first saw this book at The Getty Museum. My boyfriend, an architect, picked it out as a great architecture book. The pictures are absolutely beautiful. The architecture represented in the book are some of the most famous in the world and a wonder to look at. From the famous Guggenheim in Bilbao to Falling Water, it's my best buy. It's worth more than the money that you'll pay at Amazon!

A reflection of the man in an interesting and easy read
This short, well-written book provides a compelling look at a series of events in 1962 that not only changed politics in the state of Georgia, but launched the man that would become our 39th president into a career in public service.

The book itself is facsinating, gentle, and approachable, much like Mr. Carter himself. He paints a colorful picture of a place and time in American and state politics that one would find hard to believe ever existed so out in the open, so legal and accepted.

If you're looking for gripping political drama or a dose of splashy, insider dirt, you won't find it here. What you will get from "Turning Point" is an understanding of how geniunely compassionate and well-intentioned a man Mr. Carter is, perhaps always better suited to do more good outside of the world of modern politics and the presidency.

If only he had communicated this well as President.
President Carter has in this book painted an extremely clear portrait of the world of rural southern politics. A world that has changed some since the 1962 election he describes in this work, but not much. Just last year in my own House district the Republican primary candidate from the smaller of the two counties in the district won the election after no returns came in from his county until all the returns were in from the larger county. Officials in the smaller county then knew the margin they needed, and they delivered. The results weren't contested but a few years ago when the results of an election were contested it was found that many of the votes cast in this small county were cast by the dead. Just like in Quitman County.

Carter tells the story of his first run for public office in a very comfortable and easy to read style. Even though I knew the outcome I couldn't put the book down because I just had to know what happened next. From the time he starts his campaign one can sense history unfolding, not just as the election laws of Georgia change, but also as a naïve candidate slowly begins to learn the lessons that will eventually take him to the White House. Carter does miss one important point though that deserves some attention. The heavy weight given to rural votes in the south was not only an attempt to keep blacks out of politics but revealed the strong influence Thomas Jefferson still held on the south. Jefferson I think would have been very happy to see the votes of small farmer's carry more weight than the votes in urban areas. Add to that the strong influence of the Populists in the turn of the century south and the system in place in 1962 Georgia makes perfect sense. Basically, liberal thinkers had put in place the system the new liberals wanted to change.

Reading this book, along with some of the former President's other works have made me feel as if I have known the man for years. Honest, compassionate, sensitive, intelligent, and indeed somewhat bullheaded are all words that come to mind when trying to describe the man from Plains. If you don't get to know this great American it will be a loss to no one but you and to get to know him you need this book. It is a book you will enjoy.

This explains a lot
Being a young boy, and native Georgia, during the Carter presidency, I didn't have an understanding as to who the man really was. I heard the stories about him being a peanut farmer from south Georgia and just couldn't imagine how he ended up in the white house. This book really doesn't explain that, but it does show how his early political life really shaped who he is. His struggles with the political "machine" during that time help to explain his involvement in foreign election monitoring. Other social commentary shows the compassionate man who really did want to help in his community.

President Carter is a terrific storyteller, and has some great stories to tell. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a fun, easy and political read, whether you're a Deomcrat or like me, a Republican.

A Disappointing Read
I'm a fan of Sandra Brown, but I'm not a fan of this book. The hero was an immature jerk, plain and simple. Marriage between the heroine and the hero would be like a mother-son relationship. Brown tried to portray him as the proverbial "bad-boy" type, but he came off as a mama's boy (who didn't really stand up to his domineering mother) hypocrite (he slept around profusely, but accused the heroine of being a "whore" because of her publicized affair with his late brother). Also, I was very disappointed that he actually lied to the heroine at the end of the book, when [as all romance novel readers know] everyone's supposed to come clean. He claims that he only slept with the "other" woman in the novel once, which is technically correct; ... He conveniently doesn't mention that to the besotted heroine. That said, the heroine got on my nerves too, because of her overly goody-two-shoes manner and her suseptibility to the hero. These two had no chemistry between them. These character flaws combined with some absolutlely ridiculous plot twists, make this one of the most disappointing Brown novels I've read yet.

There is fire in this one!
This is by far the best Sandra Brown book. The story was convoluted and therefore interesting. The people were larger than life, but then why read a book if you are not looking for an escape. I just had one problem, it ended too soon, but it ended very well. I have not read another Brown that is this good.

Thanks for writing it.

Great Read
I have yet to read a Sandra Brown book that I didn't like. "Where Theres Smoke" is no exception. It was full of surprises and plot twists. So many great characters and subplots that really pull you into the story. Once I got started I couldn't put it down. I read until 2 am to see how it turned out. Classic Brown--once you start her books you can't stop. The romance between Laura and Key was great but I especially loved the connection between Janellen and Bowie.
