Cut-no-corners discussions of hot-button issues
Written by ALA Notable book author Dale Carlson, In And Out Of Your Mind: Teen Science Human Bites presents scientific ethical and moral dilemmas in layman's language that any young reader (our older reader for that matter!) can understand. Written especially for teenagers and young adults, yet very relevant to anyone pondering the problems of science and the limits of humans, In and Out of Your Mind discusses evolution, physics, the brain, DNA, environment, and most importantly, the ethics of modern-day medicine, genetics, and how humans are treating the biosphere. An ideal addition to school and community library collections, In And Out Of Your Mind offers frank, cut-no-corners discussions of hot-button issues that will shape the future of the world.

'Voice of Youth Advocates' library magazine says:
"In eleven chapters divided into three main sections--Where Are We From?,Where Are We Now?, and Where Are We Going?--Carlson explains the scientific view point on the origins of life, cosmology, genetics, intelligence, bioethics, and the environment in terms that teens (and any nonscientific person) can understand...She passionately defends evolution and animal rights...and challenges her readers with questions to make them think...she succeeds in making science more understandable...

School Library Journal says:
"Contemplating the connectivity of the universe, atoms, physics, and other scientific wonders is heady stuff. Add human beings and their biology, philosophies, foibles, successes, ecology, and ethics (or lack of) to the mix, and the result is this oddly titled yet thought-provoking guide. Carlson delves into the mysteries of Earth and outer and inner space in an approachable way...Black-and-white drawings are informational and often humorous, which adds appeal, as does the quirky cover of a teen dressed as a cave man, playing guitar and crooning to the cosmos. A glossary and bibliography round out the book.-- SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL

Carlson has the uncanny ability to connect with teens.,
There is a teenager screaming "Help" on the cover of "Where's Your Head." Underneath, it says, "Psychology for teenagers. How to find out about your own personality- how it was formed, and what you can do about it." The Carlsons follow up on this promise. The book describes humans from birth to adulthood in a straightforward way. The authors cover everything from potty training to falling in love with Mommy or Daddy in early childhood to romance and sex in the teenage years. Descriptions of Freud, Piaget, and Jung's theories (as well as other psychologists) are utilized to generalize development and give varying perspectives. There is mention of Gay, Lesbian, black, white, disabled, overweight etc... teenagers and references to excellent sources of literature and support. The last quarter of the book places teenagers in a historical and cultural environment, giving them the keys to their own prison. And finally the Carlson's explain mental illness, addiction, and brain damage using teenager- friendly language such as "Who's a nut?" Throughout the book, vignettes are used to portray problems teenagers might face and choices that they might make to solve them. After a listing of choices, the Carlson's write, "Then, stop killing yourself and find another hobby." This book is about freedom. Without any understanding of oneself, freedom is impossible. The Carlson's help give insight into why teenagers act as they do, so they may then be free of addictive and other negative behaviors. "Where's Your Head" is practical, supportive, and fills a need that teenagers have to understand themselves and their surroundings. It touches on subjects teenagers may be afraid to ask about. I would recommend it for any teenager or as a basis for discussion in a teenage classroom.

Great to know teenagers have a friend in Dale Carlson
Really enjoyed "Where's Your Head". Gave me stuff to think about. Not just lists of psychological theories, but a way of putting it all in perspective. I feel like someone out there knows why I feel so crazy, but I'm not. I'm just a 19 year old.

Psychological survival skills for teens
Practical focus on psychological survival skills for teens, WHERE'S YOUR HEAD: PSYCHOLOGY FOR TEENAGERS by Dale and Hannah Carlson covers theories of human behavior, emotional development, mental illnesses and treatment.

Carlson demystifies meditation
American Library Association Notable Book author of over 50 books, Carlson has written a meditation book that demystifies and illuminates, using the mirrors of insight and science to reflect what is elusive and beyond words. In STOP THE PAIN:ADULT MEDITATIONS, Carlson has drawn together the diverse elements of the mind, the psyche, and the spirit of science to make the case that thought is an inadequate instrument to solve all problems...that the problems in relationship, with money and work can change only when one has a meditative approach...The words, examples, suggestions on getting started, and quotes from the wise are to get you to look at your own psychological thinking and see the havoc it creates.

WOULD TEENS READ THIS BOOK ?
I enjoyed this book immensely for myself but Im a 58 yr old retired teacher. I think the reading level of this book is too hard for most teens. Please write to me if you know of a teen who read and enjoyed this book. Thanks

Teen Meditations
The book How to Stop the Pain, Teen Miditation is a good book to read for young adults. It talks about why young adults are getting pains and why are they doing crazy things to make it better. Young adults are having pains because of money, sex, parents and many more. It also talks about how to medidate. Go to a silent, face the sun, or you can stare at a candle light for 2 minutes and when you close your eyes you can see the flame. Think straight on your topic and ask questions to yourself. Like why did you do it? What made you do it? How come?
I got this book at the library. I was looking for a book and I just found it. The title "Stop the Pain" made me wanted to read it. It seems that it interesting. You would just like to keep on going and going and going. The illustrating I admired too. The cartoons are so cute and creative.
Yes, I do like this book. It talks about your problems you have and your going to have. I mean like when you get old, your going to find a job for money, but for now sometimes our problems are mostly our friends or parents. This book takes you step by step. Even illustrate how to exercise meditate. It always says to calm yourself and be happy to who you are. Don't care about others, but yourself.

School Library Journal says:
"Since pain is an integral part of life, the author encourages teens to consider meditation -- conscious attention to what is going on in the brain -- as the most healt6hy antidote...time tested meditation techniques -- from simple breathing exercies to active yoga and martial-arts forms...constructive means for dealing with negative emotions and challenges, including words of widom from Eastern and Western philosophers and religious teachers....Much good adivce is contained in these pages...resources, pictures."

Patronizing title
What's next--"Basic Manuals for Friends of the Black"? Wouldn't information about resources, adaptive technology and the ADA be useful for the disabled person too? I can't comment on the content of the book, but I think the title is patronizing and ridiculous.

Really informative. I like the people's stories the best.
The short chapters gave me just what I needed to use. It was not overly technical. Being in human resources, I felt I wanted facts and tips. This book was full of them.

Girls are equal too was totally outdated...
I read the book "Girls are Equal Too" and although I found it very informational as to the history of women being treated unfairly, the information relating to now was totally, completely, absolutely outdated- at least where I live. I attribute this fact to the original copywright- 1973, was it? In 27 years women have come a long way. One thing that bugged me especially: The author says that boys ask for dates, pay for dates. I say that girls now ask for dates, and go dutch and pay their own share, usually.

If you would care to debate, email me.

girl power
i found this book to be one of the best female empowerment books i've read in a long time. it doesn't preach and it's not a book full of statistics either. it's a fun approach at a serious subject and instead of being impossible to understand the author uses real situations from the past and makes them understandable, as well as using statistics that really mean something. this is a must read for any young feminist!

An absolutely essential manual
This book embodies the terrible situation of women and girls around the world, from the Muslim and Far East worlds to our own familiar United States (yes! girls are pressured to become cute little housewives). I already had strong feminist tendencies before reading this book, but now that I am better informed, I have more reinforced views. This book is very well researched, with examples, to back many of the author's claims. I recommend this book for any girl who feels cheated by today's society that pressures them to give up their brains-to be traded in for what? Short skirts, makeup, and hairspray? Is that all that truly matters in someone's life? Does no one notice that half the world's population are treated like second class citizens and often forced into the traditional role of housewife and producer of babies? Should we stand idly by and convince ourselves that dishwashers and diaper-changing are what females were made for? Girl's brains are just as good as boys'. Why then, are women everywhere brainwashed into believing that we are inferior? Why do we continue to condone this? Does anyone realize that no where does it say in our Constitution that women are men's equals? It says "all men are created equal". It implies that women are to be no more that household servants. We say we are liberated. That is a flat-out lie. If we want to be liberated, we should read this book and be well informed on our precarious situation. No longer should women and girls stand idly by with a baby on their hip and watch their life go by them!

James Budd - Devilishly Handsome!
This is by no means literary art, but it is still brilliant. It always makes me laugh. James Budd is gorgeous - 'He was an all round athlete, got staight A's in school, and he liked to dress well' (p.15) He likes girls, and girls like him - 'He would have to be deaf dumb and blind not to notice he seemed to have a chemical effect on them' (p.37) And he can recognise the near invisible signs of a killer blow to the spleen. What a man. This book has a ridiculous plot, unbelievable characters and completely cliched language. Hideous, by all counts, but still enough to give a good laugh.

Budd. James Budd
James is a high school detective as well as an all-around athlete. The handsome young man also has karate know-how. His father, a private eye with his own agency, is Sam Star. His girl, Honey Mack is also his sidekick. In this book, he is hired by Mr. Wolf to investigate missing parts from his company. He is also investigating the case of Duke Harrington almost dying from a karate blow. I think this book was good because it was pretty realistic. It has suspense, mystery, and drama, perfect (and essential) for a good mystery novel.

Killing the baby squirrel
Really a bit off base... If you had just found a baby squirrel you would not generally have the necessary items around the house to take care of a baby squirrel.... You most likely are doing it more harm by trying to treat it (other than getting it warm - around 1-2 degrees higher than your normal body temp) take it to a rehabber... get online to get the closest rehaber near your... just type in squirrel in the address and it will find you a dozen locations to find you a rehabber...
