I can't put it down!
I greatly appreciate this book--it's a wonderful introduction to famous composers, plus a valuable resource for Christians who want to start or add to their collection of GOOD Christian music. Be a counter-cultural Christian--toss out the CCM and fire up Schutz, Bach, Handel, and the rest! Your mind and spirit (not to mention your neighbors) will thank you for it.

Excellent Source for Homeschool Music Education
This book is complete with each classical music composer, history of the life and works of music. It is written to aide people in historical facts of the composer, facts that are not normally shared in education. For example, many of the composers had a deep Christian influence in their music, and wrote for the Glory of God and stated so on origional music sheets. The book can be used for a complete classical music history education from early ages all the way up to senior high students. This is the only book needed for music education. It works extremely well in tying in facts in all areas of history. It is very well put together and informative.

Rock-solid textbook for non-math majors
I used this book for my MBA statistics class recently. This book is very well written in a clear way, not meant to be fancy but to provide a comprehensive coverage of most, if not all, relevant topics. I also belive that the coverage depth of each topic is adequate enough to satisfy all common business and economics applications.

The best way to learn statistics
This book bring us statistics in a simple way, begining with easy exercises and increasing them to hard tasks. I have tried a lot of diferent books, some of them in Portuguese, and this was the only one that is realy good enough to teach us without a tutor or professor. It brings the most important parts of statistics for Business and Economics using exercises that talk about real cases and real hypothesis testing. It was easer to learn from this book than to do it in my own language.

Great refresher if you forgot what you learned!
Nearly 20 years had passed between my graduate statistics courses and needing to do some regression analyses for my job. This book quickly refreshed my memory, taught me new insights for the first time, got me comfortable with what I was doing after a long absence from performing statistical analyses, and actually got me digging for deeper understanding beyond what I simply needed to know to get the job done! Practical, with applied examples that workers in human resources, quality, and team-based problem solving can use. I skimmed through a lot of texts at bookstores looking for something I could use - that met my needs - and found nothing. I took a chance on Applied Statistical Methods and won! I highly recommend this book for those such as myself that need a quick refresher.

As an introduction it's ok
This book by Jane Stewart Smith and Betty Carlson was a bit disappointing. I've been exposed to Smith's critical review of Dickens in the past (in audio form) and was reasonably impressed.
I really expected more than I got in this book. The authors introduce the various women, but leave out some important information. For example, no mention is made of Louisa May Alcott's "pot boiler books" which are now available to modern readers. While they may not be of the quality of some of her other work, they certainly reveal a lot about Miss Alcott that Smith and Carlson don't bother to mention.

I was perplexed at their inclusion of Gertrude Stein in the book, particularly since they are recommending Stein's work. I suspect that the audience most apt to read Great Women Authors would be relatively unimpressed with Stein's work and would not really want their adolescent daughters reading her. Since this work is best suited as an introduction to women authors for younger readers (or perhaps older readers with little literary education) it would seem appropriate for them to tailor their list just a bit for that audience. This certainly is not a book for more sophisticated readers.

I will admit to using the Jane Austen chapter with a class of homeschooled girls with whom I was doing Pride and Prejudice. I had to go far beyond what Smith and Carlson included in order to cover Austen in what I considered an appropriate fashion, but their chapter was a good lead-in.

If you are looking for high quality scholarship you should look further. If you are looking for a simple introduction to some classic women authors this may fit the bill, but be advised that evangelical parents may not want their teenagers reading all the books they recommend.
