I enjoyed this book because it was very exciting. The author used vocabulary that was easy for me to understand. The illustrations were very detailed and matched the text. I recommend reading this book.

The Great Agents
The story Julian Secret Agent is one of my favorite books because I love books with a little mystery. I can look at the silly illustration in this story and laugh for days. We are finishing our unit on realistic fiction books and this book was a pleasure to read.

The best book in the world!
The Stories Julian tells is an exellent story. It is about a young boy named Julian who goes on adventures. One time he and his brother Huey wanted to eat a great pudding that his Dad had made but his Dad said not to touch it and they got in big trouble when they did.If you want to know what happens next just read the book.

Excellent book. I read it over and over again
After reading the first story about the father and the lemon pudding, i just had to try some lemon pudding and now it is my favorite. All the stories are great and very interesting. I liked how Julian had such a creative imagination. I'm 11 years old and I still love to read it.

This is one to read aloud, again and again.
One of my all-time favorite read-aloud books, with lively, expressive illustrations. This book and its sequel - More Stories Julian Tells - describes the trials and tribulations of our hero, the ever-inventive Julian. The author, Ann Cameron, lovingly shows how Julian's curiosity and voracious desire to learn get him in and out of all kinds of scrapes. For example, the unforgettable story of how Julian convinces his little brother, Huey, to taste a pudding made for their mother. Taste they do, that fabled pudding, which according to both mom and dad, tastes "like a whole raft of lemons, like a night on the sea." And they keep on tasting 'til the pudding is gone. The punishment leveled by their father - a "beating" and a "whipping" of a new pudding - is both tender and just. Cameron's creative use of language and the way she repeats key phrases, make each story memorable and a pleasure to read aloud. You won't be surprised when you hear your audience chiming in with you!

Stories a child can really relate to
We love Ann Cameron's books and were excited to see Gloria has her own book now. My daughter (age 7) loves to hear the stories, almost always asking me to stop half way through because they are SO real for her. I have learned, of course, to reassure her that the story will turn out all right and read on. The first story about Gloria's valentine for her mother is very touching. We also enjoyed the story about the dog barking at squirrels non-stop. You see--we read this book almost a year ago and I still remember the stories!

Another Winner for Ann Cameron
Like all the best children's literature, Ann Cameron's Julian series is a delight for readers of any age. The latest in the series, "Gloria's Way," features one of Julian's best friends, Gloria. These are likeable, believable kids in believable families, and their stories ring true. Cameron has the rare adult ability to slip into a child's mind. The result is wise, entertaining stories told with sensitivity, humor, and grace. Like Gloria, children (and adults) will be reminded that "things aren't hardly ever the way I think they are." As often as not, this revelation is a comforting surprise.

Perfect for family read-alouds
As a children's librarian, I had known that Ann Cameron's books about Julian and Huey, beginning with THE STORIES JULIAN TELLS were modern classics, but I hadn't read them until just recently. I was charmed and delighted with these sweet, lovely stories about a group of African-American children and their adventures.

GLORIA'S WAY, which features Julian's friend Gloria is another jewel in this series. In the first story, Gloria spends a long time crafting a beautiful, intricate valentine for her mother. She hangs it on the outside of the door to surprise her when she comes home, but much to her horror, the wind steals her valentine. Gloria gives chase, but the valentine ends up in the cage of an insulting and slightly scary parrot, who destroys it. Angry and upset, she walks back down the block, but as she goes by Julian's father's auto shop he stops her, and helps her find a solution to her problem.

In other adventures, Gloria helps cure Huey's dog of un unhealthy squirrel obsession, learns more about her hard-working father, and finds out that it's not always a good idea to ask your best friend whether or not he likes you best.

Cameron's stories ring true--never cloyingly sweet, the children are real individuals, not cardboard cutouts. My favorite thing about GLORIA'S WAY, as well as the other books in the series, is that it portrays a wonderful view of community--two parent families who care about their children, and about their children's friends. I love the fact that Julian's dad has a shop in the neighborhood, and that he would stop his work to comfort Gloria when she was upset.

I highly recommend GLORIA'S WAY to everyone. This would be a perfect read-aloud for a school classroom for families, as well as a good book for 3rd-4th graders to read alone.

From the author, March 4, 2,000
An excerpt from this book, about African-American characters, was used January 31, 2,000 in a state-wide Illinois third-grade reading standards test. 70,000 Illinois children got this test excerpt, in which the testers reillustrated the story without permission and changed the characters to Causcasians. I wrote the book with great care, and with the hope that many children will identify with my characters who are courageous and successful and well-liked. Over 200,000 copies of the book have been sold. I know from my fan mail that many children of all races do identify with the characters. It must have been painful for many of them to see their heroes turned white on a test--and for others who know the book, it must have been distracting at the least. One of the testers' three new illustrations shows the brothers in the story playing baseball. Eight books about the characters have been published to date (there will be a new one next year)--and in none of them do the characters play baseball. The testers developed their test questions based on a 3-page excerpt from the book; they had never even seen a copy of the entire book (thus the error in race), much less read it. It's quite possible that a child who had read the book would give different answers to the test questions based on his knowledge, and that the testers, in their ignorance, would mark it wrong. In many states, statewide tests are very serious these days--children are stigmatized for low scores, and teachers lose their jobs. But it appears that the tests are hastily and thoughtlessly constructed and penalize good readers. Parents and all of us concerned with education need to know what kind of tests children are being subjected to. --anncameron@guate.net

I like this book
I think it's a great book. So I want other people to read it. Because Julian tells lots of stories and it's lots of fun reading it.

A wonderful book to read aloud
I teach 3rd grade, and I read this book aloud to my students each year. Ann Cameron gives a realistic picture of a child abandoned by his mother, and taken in by his grandmother.
She gives a wonderful message about the importance of education and asking for what is really important to you. Although this book is written in easy to read language and great illustrations, the author's messages are best discussed with young ones. I thank Ann Cameron every time I read this book.

Delightful, sincere, and accurate
This is a delightful children's book about a boy living in San Pablo, a small town on the shores of Lake Atitlán, in Guatemala - truly one of the most beautiful places in the world. The story is a heartwarming, but authentic depiction of the trials and joys of a boy's life in rural Guatemala. The drawings are also accurate portraits of village life. The themes of responsibility, love, and quest for knowledge are timeless. Not only will children enjoy this charming tale, but adults will enjoy reading it to them.

Absolutely stunning story.
Gripping and provocative mystery of successful Maine shipping family during the late nineteenth century, Cameron's Landing focuses on Lorna, the new governess and amateur sleuth. Story is fast paced, engrossing, and moves to love story type ending for Lorna and Alex, the youngest Cameron heir. Cameron's Landing could be cited as Anne's best and is a must for faithful Anne Stuart fans. If you can't locate a copy, try the auctions.

A stirring Book
The librarian in our school discovered this book in the stacks and shared it with me. It quickly has become a favorite for many of my spanish bilingual students, who relate to the character, his family and his overwhelming circumstances. The home of the grandmother overflowing with relatives reminded me of my own extended family. The author created a character who is loyal. One of my girls took it home to read, I know we will read it again and again. It is a stirring little book.

The Kidnapped Prince : The Life of Olaudah Equiano
As a parent doing research about a slave ship called the Henrietta Marie, I discovered the book The Kidnapped Prince: The Life of Olaudah Equiano. I was very moved by this book as well as my eight-year-old daughter. Olaudah Equiano expressed his view of slavery and the very essence of life as a slave very eloquently in his book. His constant eternal struggles to stay true to his self and survive as a slave make me applaud him with all my heart. The message Olaudah Equiano reinforces in his book, which will never grow old. "Education is the key to a successful life". Which is a meaningful message for today's African American children. Nevertheless, to achieve freedom before the age of 25 truly define him as a Prince and a leader. Ann Cameron did a supreme job with the translation of old English to Modern English. I highly recommend this book for all ages.

Good characters and a good story
The book The Secret Life of Amanda K. Woods was a thrilling and adventurous book. It tells the story of an eleven-year old girl trying to find out who she really is. Although it's going to be though because her best friend just moved away and everyone is trying to force Amanda to be more like her older sister Margaret. Margaret has always been in the sun. Everyone loves Margaret. But Amanda is different. She is treated like a mosquito when she is in her room. Amanda gets a new friend named Pam. Amanda's mother, who is very demanding has changed her older sister into what her mother wanted her to be and not what Margaret wanted to be. Amanda had a pen pal from France whose father was a mathematician. He gave Amanda a strip of paper that was twisted once and glued together. It was called a Moebius strip. Life was like a Moebius strip, with two sides that were one. A person might want to separate the sides, but it couldn't be done. With many thrilling adventures to come, and with the help of Amanda's father and her best friend Pam, Amanda conquers her final goal. And that was to be nothing but her plain old self.

Super Bright Star - S.A.S.D.
I thought the book The Secret Life of Amanda K Woods was a very good book.Amanda K. Woods was like any other living teenager trying to over come the trial and tibulations of life. First her best friend Lucus told her he was moving.Lucus was the only place Amanda could read comic books. Her mother disapprove of such reading. Amanda has to be very through out this book.Ann Cameron did a very good job writing this book about a teenagers life.

The Secret Life of Amanda K. Woods
This book shows alot of what kids Amanda's age go through. Like most kids she has a role model, a best friend, and a Lyle Leveridge hand. Okay, well i guess you don't have a Lyle Leveridge hand. This book is my favorite book. It shows you real life mixed with a little fantasy. I highly recomend it.
