The biography of Pioneer Baptist preacher, John Taylor (1752-1835, Virginia-Kentucky) was superbly researched and written by Chester Raymond Young, the editor. His annotation of John's pithy, and sometimes rambling discourse, on his 10 Baptist Churches in the Bluegrass and Ohio R. region of early Kentucky, really helps one to understand the history of the pioneer settlers. By reading the biography first, one gains a much deeper appreciation of who the people and family members are, whom John Taylor mentions in his book. This is a treasure trove for both geneologists and students of religion.

Perhaps the most striking thing about this book is the vastness of Taylor's research. He is succinct with language and description as he evokes accurate depictions of environmental groups and their plight in the recent history of our global demise. While Taylor doesn't always agree with a group, he is committed to letting each group weave their own tale, and he seems to sincerely appreciate the struggle for which many are willing to risk their livelihood. He is fiercely critical of other groups, but not without purpose. In fact, the true brilliance of this work is how Taylor is able to articulate a cohesive vision from the multiplicity of narratives that inspires a new look at our green pursuits.

Gardening was a popular hobby for some of the Colonials, and they adapted native plants to their gardens, imported old favorites, and avidly traded new discoveries. The focus here is on Colonial Williamsburg and the Southern colonies rather than the Northeast.

This was an interesting little book. It would have been nice if it had been printed on better quality paper. Especially enjoyable for native and "old" plant enthusiasts.
