Terrific Book!!
I read this book in high school over twenty years ago and it made quite an impression. I've never forgotten it and reading some of the other reviews it's obvious many others share the same sentiment. Burgett's writing style gives you the feeling that you're actually there, witnessing the accounts of Normandy with an unbelievable attention to detail. Thankfully, we had people such as Burgett not only willing to fight the fight but to also give us a glimpse into what it was like to be there. This book is a must read for everyone, provided you can find it.

THE Best Combat book I have ever read
I first read this book in the 8th grade, (I got the 1967 copy from a friend and refuse to give it back)now I'm a junior in high school I and re- read it every year to remind myself how thankful I should be to veterans. Burgett goes into great detail about his training and combat experience in the Normandy invasion. I recomend this book to anybody young adult and above who wants to know exactly the horrors that went on in WWII. Burgett does not sugar coat anything so be prepared. One thing about all of his books is he doesn't really talk a lot about fear only excitement and anticipation, he leaves fear up to the reader.

A True American Hero
I have read all of Donald Burgett books and this one is as good as the others. He proves again that he fought for all of us Americans and that we owe him and all his fellow soldiers everything that we have today. As an ex-army Ranger I can relate to his hardships of living outdoors and can picture everything he says. An outstanding book.

One of the best books on the Battle of the Buldge Around.
By far one of the best books written on the Battle of the Buldge and the seige at Bastogne. Burgett gives excellent eyewitness testimony to the horror and slaughter that was the Battle of the Buldge. The reader sees the battle through the eyes that faught it. Burgett brilliantly takes the reader into the heat of the battle and makes the reader understand what it was like to be in the 101st Airborne during World Wae II. I could not put this book down until it was finished and it made me want to read as much as i could about the Battle of the Buldge.Donald Burgett is truly an American Hero. I highly recommend this book to everyone young and old.

This book did an excellent job of telling an important story
Thirty years ago, when I was in junior high school, I read Mr. Burgett's first book on his actions as a paratrooper during the Normandy Invasion. Over the years, I must have re-read this book probably twenty times. It was that good. Most books tell us what this unit did and what the other unit did, but Mr. Burgett tells us what he and his fellow squad members did. I can't believe there is any better history than that to tell. In his latest book, Mr. Burgett tells us about the second most important battle that the United States Army fought in Europe in 1944. I have ready many books on the Battle of the Bulge and I feel that this was one of the more important ones that I could have read.

Awesome book
If you are looking for a personal account of the siege of Bastogne during the battle of the bulge and the tremendous feat of the 101 Screaming Eagles or are just looking for a great non fiction thriller then get this book. Burgett was a member of the 506th and fought in some of the most bloody battles around Bastogne. But besides the awesome fighting sequences he describes the misery of the foxhole, freezing temps and patrols. But look for the cheap 5 dollar version of the books because it is the same thing including the pics. And if you like this then go back to the start and read Burgetts Curahee...an awesome account of his part in the airdrops during Normandy, also available in the cheap version...

Excellent Account of the 101 in the Normany Campaign
Excellent read, however those not versed in the WWII military venacular (e.g. B.A.R., D.Z., O.P., etc.) may have problems following some aspects of the book. Those who have read other accounts of the Normandy campaign (or other millitary history of the european theater) will tear through this easy and enjoyable read. Burgett was a very hard man, who killed 27 germans in one fire fight, and scores of others during the war. He proclaims to not understand the need for his colleages to mourn the loss of a buddy when there were still more nazis to kill! This book is a perfect compliment to Band of Brothers, it details the same training and battles of the same regiment only A company instead of E company.

Great book!!!
I have been a student of World War II since junior high (I am now 41). This book, and the others by Burgett, are the most spell-binding accounts of battle I have ever read. They really put you into the mind of a young paratrooper. Burgett doesn't regale you with his acts of heroics. He does hold others in awe, but describes his own actions in a matter-of-fact manner, downplaying any type of heroics on his part. What really sets this book apart from other war books, though, is Burgett's eye for detail. He tells you about the food they ate, the dead livestock, the countryside in a manner that allows the reader to actually visualize it. Burgett has the same knack for details that Tom Clancy does. The difference is that Burgett's were all too real.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!
If you havn't read this book you are in for a treat!
With the recent release of Ambrose' 'Band of Brothers' on HBO there has been an overdue increase of interest in the Screaming Eagles of WWII. This book is what first interested me. This is the first in a series of four books written by a regular trooper of the 101st...And what a series it is. This set is considered by most to be one of the best memoirs ever written about war. Here is exposed the fear and tradgedy of a real battlefield. Burgett has you on the edge of your seat for the entire ride from the unbearable training in the hot Southern sun to the terrors of D-Day and the battle around Carentan. This is no holds barred, exposed in all its raw detailed writing at its best!
Please be sure to couple this book with the next three, including the number one WWII book (in my opinion), Seven roads to Hell. Together this set allows an unforgettable glimpse into the life of a WWII paratrooper!
If you want the complete experience, read 'Rendezvous with Destiny' (see my review) for the complete unit history of the 101st, and do so before this memoir.

You have to fill in the blank!
First of all...since this book is so cheap and fills in the gap between two of the best WWII books out there (currahee and 7 roads) it is on my must read list...and with its length it is an easy 2 day read. But I must admit I was just a little bit disappointed...maybe because of Burgett's other two books I became an action junky, but this book seemed to never get going. He does give wonderful insight into the market garden operation and his writing, as usual, is easy flowing and descriptive. But his unit doesn't seem to run into alot of trouble, and if they did it wasn't portrayed in the fashion of his normandy and bastogne experience. Please don't think I am criticizing one of our nations heroes and one of my personal favorites, but I imagined the holland fight to be a bit hairier and those looking for a WWII memoir are probably looking for the same thing.

a great read however and for the price and length a must buy...

Burgett continues to impress...
This book gives a very forthright account of one of the biggest debacles in WWII. Burgett moves on from Normandy down the road to Arnhem and continues to provide awing details of a paratrooper's life in WWII. What I like most about this book, as well as other Burgett books, he gives credit to all soldiers. At the end, this book highlights the courage of the British soldiers who were literally slaughtered by the Germans, but refused to surrender until ordered to do so (similar to the Screaming Eagles in Bastone).

Great Book
I thought this book was awesome, great action, real life heroes performing real acts of heroism, it makes you feel proud that you live in America. I thought this book was a great book, I learned a lot from it, some events that happened are pretty unbelievable but its all a true story. so I would recommend this book to anybody who likes a good war story.

The final book of the series.
I have read Burgett's first three books and they are great reads.
In comparison with those first three books, this is an average read. Why? Very little action. It almost seems like a travel guide with Burgett saying in essence--I went here and then I went there. Burgett is a good author, but I think he is trying to capitalize on his combat experience. His first three books detail the combat experience, but this fourth book could have been cut down to fifty pages, and attached onto his last book. Because of the publisher, they make Burgett get another book out of very minimal material. I don't think there is a fifth book here Don, so don't try.
That said, Burgett is a great author, so please read his first three books about the Normandy Invasion, Battle of the Bulge, and the Holland Campaign. For the WWII historian, these show the true experiences of an American soldier.

Good ending.....
I am glad Burgett put out this book as it is a perfect ending to the series. I am sure he had not planned on writing so many books, but they are all so good, I think we all would have missed out if he hadn't. Read them all in order, one after another for the full effect. Good stuff, enjoy!

The Grand Finale!!!
This 4th installment in the story of Donald Burgett and the WWII
experiences of the 101st Airborne Division is a fitting end to a fine combat memoir. The author picks up where he left off in "Seven Roads to Hell" in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and traces his experiences from crossing the Rhine River to the end of the war in Hitler's vacation resort in the Alps. Aside from his usual description of battle with the enemy, he also makes liberal use of noncombat scenarios during his unit's advances. His writings will be the standard against which future authors' wartime reminiscences will be compared. I highly recommend this book to all WWII history enthusiasts.
