The Carvers Save the Day
The Ghost of Windy Hill is a good book for all ages. It is not scary, but not funny. If you like books with surprises, this is a good one. There are a lot of characters in this book who are very nice, especially the Carvers. This book take place in the country outside of Boston in the year 1851.

Clyde Robert Bulla is a great author!
I have read the book Ghost of Windy Hill about 5 times and it never gets boring. One time I read it twice in a week. So it dosn't take very long to read. I have also read Aanother of his book i read Ghost Town Treasure. That i read in a few hours and it was as good as Ghost of Windy Hill.

My favorite book when I was was a child!
This was my most favorite book when I was in the 3rd thru 5th grade! It has a great plot & a great twist at the end of the story.

The Sword in the Tree

Great for all young lovers of Knights, Castles & King Arthur
I read this out loud to my 4-year-old son, who loves anything involving King Arthur, and he was captivated. His only disappointment was that there is no book to follow with more tales of the young Shan and his adventures. I highly recommend this as well as other historical fiction by Bulla. I have also read "Pocahontas and the Strangers" to my son, and he loved that as well.

High Interest for a New Reader
Once your child has moved beyond easy phonetic readers, you'll want to find interesting books with large print that aren't too difficult or overwhelming for the new reader. Bulla's "The Sword in the Tree" fits this description perfectly.

Try reading the first chapter to your young reader to spark his interest. Then read the next chapter or two aloud together so he/she becomes familiar with the words and flow. Then sit back and listen as your child finishes reading this exciting book about greed, courage, and chivalry.

Excellent for English as a Second Language Students
This book is an excellent source for "medieval" units. I have used it with weak 5th grade English as a Second language readers and they are very successful with it. It teaches grade level content at a lower reading level. They do not feel they are reading an easy book. It is a wonderful starter book for reluctant readers.

Fantastic
Clyde Robert Bulla is my uncle. Every year on my birthday my aunt Maude, his sister would send me a book written by him. This one was very special for the obvious reasons. I highly recommend this, as well as any of his stories to anyone. A great read.

This is a story of the life of a young Clyde Robert Bulla.
This book is an autobiography about the first ten years of Clyde Robert Bulla's life.
Clyde faced many adventures in his life. One of these was when he lost his memory in a
horrible accident. Once he almost burned his own house down. Another time
he learned how to swim. There are many more exciting events.

Clyde knew he wanted to become a writer when he was in first grade! This is a great book to read if you want to learn more about Clyde Robert Bulla.

The Moon Singer
This was my favorite childhood book. Although it originally belonged to my brother, I claimed it for my own. Throughout years of foster homes and state homes, this book captured my imagination and gave me hope that I needed. It's an amazing story with some outstanding illustrations.

Beautiful story of an orphan finding his place and his song.
This is my childhood favorite and one that I now use in my creative drama classes. It highlights the gift that comes from being in connection with nature rather than dominating it.

The Three Dollar Mule
My 20 yr old read this book years ago and loved it as much asmy 7 yr old liked it today! This is exciting enough to keep a newreader interested with funny incidents and some exciting happenings. It is very difficult to find something for this stage of reader who is ready for something a lot more stimulating than rhyming picture books. This is particularly true for young boys who would rather be outside playing than reading. Bulla's story has a difficult mule named Sinbad, a 12-yr old boy with a broken leg, a thoroughbred horse, and some cows and chickens thrown in for lots of interest!... The book could be read to a pre-reader, it could be read together (by switching off) with an early reader, or enjoyed by anyone up to the age of 12 when they can read alone. Approved by a homeschooling mom!

The Three Dollar Mule
My mom and I have been looking for good books to read. I had been reading the Polk Street School books by Patricia Reilly Giff and have finished them. Mom remembered Clyde Robert Bulla books and how much my older sisters enjoyed them when they were my age. I read THIS great book in one morning. It's about a boy who reluctantly buys an ornery mule for $3 after he sees a man beating him. Don, the 12 yr old boy, really wants a thoroughbred horse but his dad tells him he can't get the horse until he gets rid of Sinbad the mule. Don and his sister Jenny try to give the mule away he's so much trouble for the family, but no one in town wants the mule when they hear how much trouble Sinbad is. In the end Sinbad can stay. Read this exciting story to find out what happened to make Don's dad change his mind!

Best Book Ever
I think this book would be very good for kids that don't usually like to read. In the beginning, it is very sad, so you want to find out what happens to Charlie. You keep reading because you like Charlie's personality and you care about what will happen to him.

Prediction Skills
This is a great book to use when you help enhance your students' prediction skills. You could have the students guess what they think will happen next as you orally read the story. You could also have the students write their own ending and then read the book's ending to see if they guessed right or if they like their own ending better! I would use this in grades 1-3.

A beautifully written book about overcoming prejudice.
From the title, you might not expect this to be one of the best chapter books ever written for young children, but it is. My oldest child is 17 and my youngest 6, so I have been reading aloud for many, many years, and this is one of my all time favorites. In simple, but beautifully poetic language, Clyde Robert Bulla tells a story of an "ordinary" prince, a disappointment to his cruel and snobbish family, who runs away and meets a "monster" who lives with his people in underground caves. Although the humans and the monsters fear and hate each other, the boys become friends, slowly learning to trust and even protect one another. It is a wonderful story, both exciting and psychologically rich, and it deals with overcoming prejudice in a way that makes sense even to children as young as five or six. But it's so good, so beautifully written, that I'd recommend it for children as old as nine or ten. Unfortunately, as I write this, the book is currently out of print, but any decent library ought to have it. And I hope the publishers come to their senses soon and make it widely available again. This is a book every child should get the opportunity to hear.

A Friendship
I really liked this book because it was about a kid named Gregory who moves to a new town with his mother and father. It is bad enough moving without having any friends, but not making any new ones is pretty bad too. Everyone was given some seeds to plant a garden. But at his new house he doesn't have much of a yard so he can't make a garden. Behind his house is a burned down chalk factory, so he draws a garden. If you want to find out if he makes any friends read this book.

The Chalk Box Kid.
If you want a book where you can slip into the person's shoes, and feel like you know the character, then this is the book for you. Gregory was staying with his Aunt Grace for his birthday, because his mother and father were moving to a new house. They hade to move because got fired and found another job on the other side of town, so they hade to move.
Then when Gregory's mother and father got to Anut Grace's house they hade to get back home. When they got there Gregory asked do I have my own room? He did and he was so happy he said "This is better then a party and cake this is the best Birthday ever!" The next day he started the first day of school, in his new school. That day when he came home from school he was walking around and found a gate to a burnt down building. He cleaned it up a bit and found a box of chalk. That at school Mr. Hiller, a friend of Miss.Perry, came in and taught Gregory and the rest of the kids all about plants. When Gregory when home that night he said to his mother,"We don't have any grass around here". So he started to draw plants in the building. His mother and father did nit want to see. They were too busy.Don,t worry the end gets gets better.
I could not put the book down because the book never ended, and you would most likely would want to stay up and read it.You will like the book but you have to read it to find out!!!

Wonderful book for kids!
This book about Gregory tells how a child learns to express himself and win the admiration of his family, teachers and classmates. We have a copy for each of our second graders and use it as a reader. ....

He may be bonded for seven years. He meets some nice captains and some mean ones. He meets some bad guys and some new friends and goes to a lot of new lands.
