read age limit
Great book, but I did not pay close enough attention to the reccommended age limit. It really is a bit too much for my 7 year old. 9 years and up is accurate. It is a very fun book though, with lots of activities and things to make.

Two Hooks Up!
My kids and I love this book. There were so many cute ideas, several parties worth. Pirates are a hit with most kids and this book uses this theme combined with simple objects to make things that kids will think are awesome. I especially liked the recipes, the place cards, the ideas to make with salt dough, and the pirate facts throughout the book.

Outstanding reference source
I'm a professional boatbuilder in Port Townsend ,WA. While there are dozens if not hundreds of boat repair and building books out there, few are as user friendly to the uninitiated as this book is.If you are contemplating purchasing this book to perform maintenance or repair on a wooden boat, buy it! Along with "The Arts of the Sailor" and " The Marlinspike Sailor", this volume belongs on any traditional sailor's shelf. It is one of very, very few books I've encountered that explains repair of a lapstraked (clinker) plank. The overall layout and terminology as applied to parts of the boat is outstanding. The next apprentice that walks through my shop door is getting this book handed to him.

A childhood favorite
This book is definately worth the trouble of finding. It was a childhood favorite of mine over ten years ago, and is still one of the best children's books I have ever read. George and Matilda get married and take up residence in a doll house. This chronicles their adventures and the arrival of their children on Christmas Eve/

Original Ideas From Meticulous Scholarship
George Wesley Buchanan believes that Bible scholars haven't had the courage to face the historical Jesus, or at least to communicate the truth about Jesus to ordinary Christians.

He uses form criticism to discover what can be known about Jesus. I learned everything I know about "chreias" from this book. Chreias are memory devices Greek rhetoricians used. Buchanan believes that Bible writers remembered events in Jesus's life in chreia form. He believes he can identify them where they occur, and that chreia portions of the Gospels can be trusted as reliable. This provides an answer to the synoptic problem.

Using both Christian and non-Christian literature, he traces chreias in literature through hundreds of years, showing how the meaning remained the same, but the wording varied .

Buchanan believes that parables are less reliably preserved than chreias. He notices hints of military terminology in the parables. This leads him to suspect that Reimarus was too quickly dismissed, and that at least at one time Jesus probably was organizing an insurrection against the Romans.

He has a chapter on cycles of time that helps explain eschatological thinking during Bible times.

The book is much better than this review. Buchanan presents lots of data, but tries not to be dogmatic. In spite of the depressing conclusions that Buchanan seems to reach about Jesus, you should read the book. You won't stay up nights any more wondering why Matthew, Mark, and Luke report the same events in different words after reading about chreias.

None of Buchanan's books are boring, and none are a rehash of what others have said before him. They are always full of original thought and interesting data.

The book of my childhood.
This book was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I never read it in English, I did not even speak English back then. I read it in Polish and now I want to see if it's as good in English as well. It's a book that makes one want to be at the places that are described, see and feel, touch and live with people who are characters of this book. I read this book hundreds times and I still grabbed it tonight, even though I am already twenty. And it still takes me into the author's childhood. Not only that, it takes me into my own childhood as well. It is truly an amazing book.

Making Stringed Instruments: A Workshop Guide
Published in Hardcover by Borgo Pr (1991)
Author: George Buchanan
Amazon base price: $45.00

Detailed Hands-On Guide
This is a marvelous, nuts-and-bolts guide to building stringed musical instruments. It starts, and goes into great detail, with a violin and then proceeds to cello, mandolin, classical guitar and finally arch-top or jazz guitar. Most of the shaping and assembly processes are covered in the violin section and then the following sections are shorter, dealing only with techniques specific to that instrument. The first section of the book, called The Workshop, covers selection, care and maintenance of common intrument making tools. It also outlines making some useful and reasonably easy tools. This is great if you are handy, resourceful and feel like saving a few dollars. It ends with a very important part on wood selection. Read the section on making a violin no matter which instrument you are interested in! It also covers, in detail, how to perform some of the techniques that are only covered glancingly in the following instruments. These might be useful hints for using this book: - Look for the scale for the instrument drawings along the edge of each picture! - After you've done all the reading about your intrument, look at the Construction Sequence to figure out what to do, and in what order! - Figure that how ever long it looks like each step will take, it will probably take twice as long. Enjoy the process of building because you will be doing it for a while! - When you are ready to build, look back at the wood types for your chosen instrument. Then go back to Part 1: The Workshop and re-read the part called Wood. Then go to Part 11: The Violin and read the section on Choosing The Wood. The part about listening to your wood as you tap on it may sound like hocus-pocus but it is vital to building a good instrument! You want clear, solid, sound wood to build with or all your work will be wasted! Use your imagination while you read this book. Musical instrument building is only partly a science; the rest of the process involves artistry. Many small errors can be corrected or simply incorporated into the final instrument. No great instrument makers made all of their instruments exactly the same. Their mistakes where called personalizing each instrument! This book will guide you comfortably through the process of building your own instrument.

A Little Scary!
This isn't like the Disney movie! I loved this book but at the same time I was shocked by the violence of the fighting between Hook and the Lost Boys and the Indians. I don't think I'll be reading this one to my nephews and neices, not until I have edited out the violent bits. It wasn't that In-Your-Face violence of the Hollywood movies, it was more insinuated and there was definetly a menacing atmosphere surrounding Wendy's, Peter's and Michael's adventures in Never Never Land. I do recommend it though, just not for easily frightened youngsters. This is definetly in need of a PG rating on the cover. PARENTS: This is no Disney Peter Pan!

Best Audio Book in my ten year search
Driving with young children in the car quickly convinced me that it was unsafe to not give them something to listen to. After ten years I have collected a large (30+) bag of books-on-tape. I have also loaned them to others and asked for opinions. Peter Pan (read by Wendy Craig) is not only my favorite, but also the favorite of my wife and most of my friends. It is excellent for all ages (4 to 80) and even most hardened teenagers. Humour, presentation, ... a prefect 10.

Bittersweet
The book 'Peter Pan' by J. M. Barrie is a truly beautiful work. It is never too cloyingly sweet or too harsh, and the child's perspective of the world is beautifully crafted. It does, however, bring you along on a journey to the Neverlands, and perhaps for a little while we can be reunited with our dreams.

Although Wendy seems a little prim, she is sweet and motherly. John was offhand and brave, Michael was tiny and believing. My favourite character was, however, Peter. The author really outdid himself on this one. Peter's innocent cockiness and love for dangerous adventures endeared him to me at once. He still has all his first teeth, and his first laugh - what more could we ask of him? His frightful happiness in danger reminds me of my seven-year-old self.

The book retains a magical quality right up to the last page. The midnight scene where Peter coaxes them out of the window has always stood out in my mind; there is a kind of magic in an ever-young boy, small and innocently cocky and always up to some mischief. The ending of the book is very sad, for only those who are gay and young and light-hearted can fly.

Definitely a book worth reading. Adults, trust me on this one: you might think you're too old to read this book, but once you do you'll find that a piece of Neverland still resides in your heart.

An Enticing yet Un-magical Book
I really enjoy Ms. Nesbit's written works. It is quite a shame that she can't write anymore. Although I liked this one a lot, I was a little disappointed by it because it lacked the charming fairy tale sort of feel that many of her children's books have. However, the story was quite wonderful, and I particularly loved the realistic scene of the children that the reader is given. I highly recommend this book to Edith Nesbit's fans, as well as people that enjoy a touch of mystery, mixed with a child's view of life.

the railway children is a 9 out of 10 book!
I like the Railway Children a lot, especially how the author told the story. I liked Bobbie because there is something different about her,she was helpful and sweet at the same time. I am wondering where the dog James went? Other than that, the story was great!

Pray for all prisoners and captives
The Railway Children is a wonderful book. When the book begins, the three children, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis are living a lovely, secure life at Edgecomb Villa. Their father returns home after being away on business, two unknown men come to visit him in the evening after supper, and he simply disappears. Neither the reader nor the children know what has happened to him until Bobbie makes a chance discovery and learns the horrible truth.

In the intervening time, their mother, a capable and charming woman, takes her children to live in the country near a railway station, because they must "play at being poor for a while." The children handle their new situation with grace and wit, spending hours hanging about the railway station and generally keeping themselves busy, and in the process becoming fast friends with the porter, Perks, and the station master. They also become acquainted with their own old gentleman who lends a hand to help them time and again.

Bobbie is the oldest and sweetest of the children, with a longing to be truly good. Peter is the boy, who is madly in love with trains, stubbornly refuses to pushed around, and exhibits an extraordinary courage in the rescue of a baby and a young man in a train tunnel. Phyllis is the youngest, a funny, clumsy child with good intentions that often seem to go awry.

I read this book to my four year daughter. She loved it. As the adult, I enjoyed reading it. And, you'll be happy to know, it all comes out right in the end.
