A superb profile of an amazing artist
Mark Dion is one of those creative people, be they artists, scientists, scholars, cryptozoologists, inventors, novelists, or whomever/whatever, who hit up against the rigid parameters of where they find their work landing - then goes beyond. This book, in photographs and text, defines for those only now beginning to be aware of Dion's efforts, a sense of the who and what of this man. To get a wonderful peek inside the mind of a genius, obtain this book. - Loren Coleman

Sugimoto's new world
What I have here is his new world. Impressive. I remember his ocean and theater photogragh deep in my heart for a long time. I feel safe this time to see his new approach.

Yet another Art Form
This elegant and eloquent collection of "portraits" is a compendium of photographs of sculpted wax figures by Sugimoto. As if the idea of electing to photograph these historically garbed figures weren't sufficient to merit attention, Sugimoto has enhanced these haunting images with sensitive lighting and positioning on the lens so that it appears he has gathered models, dresssed them in costume, and set up studio stages. This book is a must for lovers of photography, portraiture, and art in general. A beautiful addition to art libraries!

An artist's artist
Always thrilled to see what this master of conceptual photography will come up with next.

This book features Mr.Sugimoto's recent series of photographs of wax figures of famous historical figures. If you don't know they are wax figures you might at first glance think that they are old master paintings... the realization that these are in fact wonderfully executed large scale photographs of equally wonderfully executed wax figures is at first a little shocking and ultimately fascinating.

A sensitive, intimate book on the virtues of still lifes
This small and highly accessible book reflects on the significance of the slighted area of still life painting. It is a gentle and reflective reminder of the significance of domesticity and the interior in painting.

new = mid-eighties onward
This catalog presents a wide range of 'new' Chinese art (1985 onward). Some of it may be familiar to readers only casually acquainted with Chinese art, but most of it will not. In fact, even gallery goats are likely to find much new material. They have included the hanging scrolls (Zoon) of Huang Chih-Yang, the rouged, flower biting comrade by Li Shan, Fang Lijun's rage against conformity (the Chinese version of Munch's Howl), and Zhang Yu's elegant meditation. They have also selected pieces that look like rock album covers from the sixties, several more that express current turbulant feelings about Mao and his legacy, and many others that show this developing nation is growing up quickly...perhaps too quickly for its own psychic good. There are several essays to provide background and cultural context, but frankly, they're a bit lengthy and repetitive. This collection is certainly worth a look, but for every piece likely to raise an eyebrow and draw you in, there will be two that are quite forgettable.
