One of the best birth descriptions ever written
I'm a midwife and an author. Pregnant women for the past 30 years have asked me '...but what does labor/birth really FEEL like?' Dorothy Bryant, by choosing to have her main character be blind and placing her in a situation where she is totally alone in a remote cabin when she gives birth, has written one of the most gripping and realistic accounts of what it's really like that I've ever read.
A small masterpiece, just for that part of the story alone.

Birth is natural
The Garden of Eros is a book about a woman who is blind and pregnant. It is the story of her birth and what goes through her mind as her labor progresses. It tells about her spiritual and emotional growth throughout her experience. She is transformed not only through the birth of her child, but more importantly through her ability to endure. It is a fabulously empowering book for every pregnant woman to read. I recommend it to every one of my friends!

A different perspective on the 80's in the Castro
Dorothy Bryant gave me something to think about. Most of us living in the San Francisco area have heard both extreme sides of the debates over the gays in the Castro. Some have glorified the 80's as the coming out period; others have verbally attacked the gays as being the first signs of the end of the age. Dorothy's book focuses on this time in San Francisco with a mother and a son. The son is a gay man living in the Castro. The mother grew up in the 60s and was a radical herself growing up. The conversations between the two and the musings of the mother are another interesting picture in this maelstrom of a time and a place. I would recommend reading it - not for changing viewpoints as much as providing yet another viewpoint together with the ones existing in the media.

Wonderful Novel
The Test is a great novel, perhaps my favorite of Dorothy Bryant's, though it's hard to say because she has so many fine books. I only know that this book is so skillfully written that you believe every word. Superbly drawn characters. Nothing flashy or gratuitous. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the the difficulties of life and how we survive them.

Very helpful and encouraging for a new writer
A writing teacher and wonderful writer, Bryant offers support, tips and techniques in a most readable book on writing.Useful tips on generating and saving ideas and freeing the writer to keep going. She also wisely recommended time away from your project before rewriting. This book spurred me on in writing my own fledgling novel, especiallyl to have the courage to create.

A longtime favorite
I read this book for the first time about 15 years ago. I have read it at least 6 times and have told many, many people about it. The Kin of Ata reaches in deep and pulls at the heart and soul. It reminds us all of the journey we are on. It re-awakens you and reminds you to listen to your dreams. ...Nagdeo to you Ms. Bryant

An awakening experience and a book I will always remember
The Kin Of Ata Are Waiting For You by Dorothy Bryant is a book that everyone should have the opportunity to read. This book is top of the list, it makes a connection within you. It is in so many ways an inspiration and a guide to follow. It will bring you back to the way things used to be, before people tried to create a dream without having that dream. It's a book about our culture and how it came to be and what our true nature is. The kin of Ata, a type of people, are waiting for you to realize that the reality is not here, it is there, their way of life. It's a book about transformation and awakening. It's described on the back of the book as, "the struggle of the human spirit to know and become itself." The book is easy to read and keeps your interest throughout.

The Beauty of the Human and All Creation
Hi There Everyone,

I have just been blown away by The Kin of Ata. Another Camelot. Another Avalon. And more.

I am not easily swayed by words.I am a Marine,a Harvard MBA, a CPA, a spouse of some years, a parent of four children, an awesome dude.

I have ... never written a review. But this time it is different.

The Kin of Ata shows us another way. A way free of sin, guilt, exclusion, boring TV, AND yet full of fun, joyful work, ways to lift ourselves up, ways to fulfill our human lives.

I enjoyed "The Celestine Prophesy". That book was distributed at first in off Main Street "New Age" bookstores and leapt off the shelves. The author was amazed and went on to sell millions.

The "Kin" is far more expansive, joyful, than the "Prophesy" for me. For those of you who know, what more can I say? For those who don't and are in search for a more meaningful life, buy, lease, or borrow this book.

By the time you have read twenty pages, you will thank me and kiss my ring. Since I wear no ring, your buying this amazing book will be our mutual gift to one another.

... I do not know how to reassure you on this point. Perhaps a little (very little in our society) trust is in order. You must decide.

This is a joy filled adventure. Easy to read. Just over 200 pages in length. Very easy to read. I bet you read it more than once!!

To the Misty Isles of Ata, Avalon, Camelot and Erin.

Been There, Done That...And Am SO Glad!
In 1973 I, as a re-entry woman, went to the community college portrayed in this book. I took a class with Dorothy Bryant, and thus, I read this book. It was almost me in those days, so of course I could relate to so much of it. I sat in the same rooms, watched the same students, walked the same campus. It is now decades later, and I am still thankful for that experience, this book, and especially for the talents, wisdom and kindness of its' author, Dorothy Bryant. I am so glad to see it still in print. READ IT!

A Woman's Search
Thirty-four year old Ella Price is a wife, mother, and college student. Ella returns to college in search of herself or something that will give meaning to her life. The reader learns about Ella, her hopes, dreams, frustrations, and disappointments by reading her journal, a series of writings that is both humorous and revealing. Near the end of the semester, Ella writes in her journal, "I'm still the same neuroitc I always was. And my life is still a bad soap opera."

First published in 1972, Ella Price's Journal touches on some timeless subjects including marriage, divorce, parenting, and religion. Ella Price's Journal is a quick, enjoyable read.
