Excellent suggestions as to how to access the deeper self
Brunton knew much more than he chose to show in this book; he was a very serious student of the path...and a sage. He started out as a journalist and those writing skills allow him to write clearly, simply and yet to explain one way of reaching the deeper mind and deeper reality. This is an excellent description of one way of accessing ones deeper self. I am sure there are many ways to climb that particular mountain...and yet he must surely be correct in stressing relaxation and "no-mind" (though he doesnt use that term) as milestones on the way to universal consciousness.

One step at a Time
In this book Dr. Paul Brunton invites us to define ourselves in our quest for the Overself. He asks the question 'Who am I?'. He then outlines three stages of meditation: self-analysis, breathing & mental quiet. He continues to describe the peace and serenity that we will achieve once we have completed these 3 steps and have awakened to our Overself.

An excellent book that I read almost everyday just before my meditation.

Reality?
The book 'Discover Yourself' is an elaboration of the previous truths that the author has presented to us. He starts of by explaining God and the beginning of religion. Further on, he gives new light to the prayer 'Our Father' that Jesus taught. He also provides wonderful insights to the Sermon on the Mount, by Jesus. He calls them 'The Seven Beatitudes' which I think is aptly named.

He again touches on the subject of Yoga and meditation and how to attain it. This is explained extremely well in his two earlier books 'The Secret Path' and 'The Quest of the Overself'. The author also compares the differences between monks & hermits who flee the world into forests and monasteries versus those who try to find God while facing the material world. Not only is the latter method preferable and realistic, it also builds for stronger self-control and self-discipline.

Three chapters are devoted to the 'Bhagavad-Gita', the Hindus gospel. I find his explanations of the Gita to be very much in line with the teachings of Jesus. Interestingly, the author also warns about the attainment of spiritual powers like healing and performing miracles, which are manifestations of a lower plane. I was initially shocked, since that has been my aspiration. I realize differently now.

The final chapters discuss 'The Gospel according to St. John' which is very enlightening. In 'The Mystery of Jesus' chapter, I find some conflict with the 'The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ' by Levi.

In conclusion, another great book by Brunton.

Collision with the Real!

A message from Arunachala

A short but timely message
Arunachala is a name of hill where Siva is worshipped as fire. Ramana Maharishi was a sage who lived there for a long period (1896-1950), at the foot of the hill. Paul Brunton as a seeker of turth met him, questioned him on various aspects. Ramana discussed with him about self-enquiry and guided him to practice it. In the book ' Message from Arunachala' is a set of small essays of Burton giving his reflections on various aspects of human conditions, when he lives near the hill. Most of the essays are written in the period between two world wars. In a gentle way, Brunton points the limitations of materialism, restricted rationalism, and the need for looking for spiritual meaning in life. Readers of this book are encouraged to read the selection from Paul Brunton's book ( A search in Secret India) which gives more details about this period. In this part, Ramana says to Paul Brunton ` I was literally charmed here and the same force which drew you to this place from Bombay, drew me to it from Madura". Readers should read the book Hunting the 'I' by Lucy Cornelssen and Ramana's Arunachala by Bhagavan's devotees ( both publications of Ramanasramam), to get a better picture of the sublime Arunachala.

A Fountain of Wisdon
Paul Brunton has written a very helpful book for serious mystics of the pitfalls and perils of the mystic path when it is not balanced in it's approach. Brunton has had a lifetime of serious study and personal experience of the many paths of mysticism to give one a healthy perspective from which to evaluate the true value of mysticism in today's world.

Peace of mind for Modern Man
I read this book two years back. It is as good as realization of truth in black and white. It is a must for a modern man who is seeking the peace of mind. It explains very well the variety of aspects of thinking of a man and the crossroads in the daily life where one is likely to step wrong. Daily reading followed by serious contemplation for about two months, helped me refine my ways to think and correct myself from the doorstep of mistakes. This book also tells about the do's and don't's for a common man in this modern-machine world. Elaborates the concept of the omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient system what may be termed as God and shatters all the idollic images of God. It convincingly asserts the highly balanced nature of the system and its evolution. I strongly recommend this book for those who are looking for the truth beneath the surface.

Great hands-on philosophy!
This book creates an immediate intimacy with the author, Anthony Damiani. "Standing In Your Own Way" is the clearest book on the ego that I have ever seen. Damiani uses philosophy and psychology to define the ego and presents a very practical approach on how to deal with it. Philosophy becomes alives through the clear thinking and helpful examples Damiani gives. A real killer for the ego!

Life Changing
I am not a philosopher nor do I claim to know a great deal of this subject but I have begun my quest for spiritual and philosophical guidance about two years ago at the age of 19. I was raised a Christian but have recently read scriptures of all the major religions and even some that are not so major. I completely agree with the perennial philosophy that all religions underline the one universal truth, but I still sought more understanding of life and of our true selves. This book gave me that oppurtunity. It explains the most fascinating concept that I have ever heard, that I now believe, which is mentalism. I could not explain it so I will not try but it is almost unbelievable. The book explains mentalism and how the universe is mentally constructed by not only God (the World-Mind) but also ourselves. He explains many of life's questions like he knows for sure which made me a little skeptical but I can not say they are false without sufficient knowledge which I am searching for as we speak. This book is a must read for any philosophy student, mystic, or even contemporary Christian.

Interesting book.
A Search in Secret India - Paul Brunton This book is a curious report of an English journalist's contact with the "mysterious" India. Armed with the best intentions possible in that time, Paul Brunton reveals to us all the prejudices and deformed ideas that the Occident has of the East. And he played a role in the vulgarization of several erroneous ideas that nowadays are accepted with the largest naturalness. Of special interest is the chapter IX "The Hill of the Holy Fire", where P. Brunton tells us his encounter with Shri Ramana Maharshi, a true Illuminated (obs: the ones that surrounded him at the end of his life and that proclaimed themeselves as their heirs weren't of the master's height). The reading of that chapter is worth the book!

A good book
Overall I found this to be a very good book, worth many rereads, mainly because the author has written about many fascinating personalities who lived in the early 20th century India. However, one of the minus points of this book is that Paul Brunton takes himself too seriously. I think the pride and arrogance of being a "genuine" spiritual seeker comes out too strongly in his narrative.

A good book on mysticism in India
This is an excellent book based on the experiences of the author, Paul Brunton, an Englishman, who toured India in the first half of the 20th century. The author's narrative is in the first person and he takes us with him as he journeys through India seeking the answer to the meaning of life. In the end, he seems to have found what he was searching for.

The book "My Father's Guru", by J. M. Masson which attempts to belittle Paul Brunton, instead reveals the egotism of Masson, who, rather than treat Brunton's ideas objectively, only aims to find fault with Brunton for nothing other than being excessively kind.
