A blatantly sexist look at gender roles.
I have to agree with the reviewer from Key Largo. How long must we be subject to books that claim to be scientific and accurate only to be handed a bigot's view point? If the book equated women, Afro-americans or jews to animals it would be recognized as sexist, racist or anti-semantic. Males are the last group to be denied the common decency called respect.

explains behavior logically
This book takes the confusion out of drastic differences in behavior between males and females. She explains the differences simply and very logically as a result of genes and social pressures....and she doesn't do it with cutesy gimmicks like different planets. This book can simplify the problems in a relationship by removing the blame-placing and substituting negotiation to solve differences. Such a great book!!!!!!

Lighten Up
concerning the Massachusets woman and Key Largo man, below: try not to take yourselves so seriously. Dr. Browne's book is a humorous and insightful look into why many men act so "male", and draws on experience and evidence from many scientific disciplines.

There is a big difference between being a man and merely being "male", and this is what Dr. Browne is illustrating. She is not condemning men, nor is she endorsing the female perspective over the male. It would benefit all to examine their own behaviors and rationally determine which are productive and which are reactionary.

Just like anything else, truth is usually found between the two extremes, and men and women will coexist much more peacefully when both try to understand themselves as well as each other. Just because the bible says that women should "sit down and shut up" only means that a man wrote it. As a man who strives to not be pigeonholed, I welcome the refreshing veiw of an intelligent woman like Dr. Browne to show us all another perspective.

Only For The Courageous
I thought Dr. Joy's book was great, even though it did meander at times and often had comments and stories as asides. I think this was just a stylistic choice, though, so arguably not a drawback.

Empowering yourself takes courage, and involves risk. But are you willing to step up? You should be, because, frankly, the alternatives suck. Dr. Joy points out the DIS-empowering fantasies that hurt us (usually without our knowing it!). To boot, she writes about constructive actions and personal choices we can take on to help our lives, no matter what they may be. While this review may sound general, Dr. Joy doles very specific advice from real past callers and writers she has experienced.

As many of the other reviews state, this book's overarching theme is that we have to take responsibility for our lives and well-being - and we have the power to do so if we choose to use it.

Original, thought-provoking and motivating.
Dr. Browne wrote this book as though you the reader are as intelligent as she - a refreshing change from the few other self-help books I have read. Her ideas strike me as sincerely thought out and are presented in a lively, upbeat manner. Her solutions to problems seem highly practical. I read almost the whole book at one sitting- captivated by her fresh yet feasible approach to life. I often think back to this book when conjuring up one of her no-no fantasies. A keeper!

Practical advice for accepting your responsibility!
I generally don't find psychology books very useful, too much pseudo science and impractical mush, sorry for the bias, but I am an Engineer and I am used to the "hard" sciences.

Dr. Browne's no nonsense approach is refreshing.

We are all dealt a hand of cards, that doesn't mean we have Aces or a full house, but we can play the hand we are dealt to the best of our abilities. If you accept this, and accept your responsibility to make the best of what you have, then you will have a happy life. This is what Dr. Browne is telling us in this book.

Thanks for the common sense! Remember the plaque at Engineering corner of the Michigan Quad. It has advice of the first Dean of Engineering at University of Michigan, "Young Man, when theory and common practice diverge, use your horse sense!"

Good for the young---but there are better books for the 30+
This book includes a lot of common sense and good humor. It was a bit too basic for me but would be good for young people. I personally found "4 Steps to Bring the Right Person into Your Life" by Philippa Courtney to be the most helpful to me because I am more interested in finding the right person than I am in the art of dating.

I'm alot smarter about dating now!
This is a great book for anyone who gets nervous about dating - It's very helpful. Dating can be scary sometimes, but this books helps to clarify some relational issues, and help you analyze how your date went, and perhaps what could have gone better (or worse!). Dating for dummies covers everything from flirting, to asking, to planning the first big date -- all the way to sex and breaking up! Reading this book has helped me to think more objectively about my dates, and give better advice to my friends.

Overall, a useful book for daters of all experience levels
This book is a good guide to dating for everyone....it has useful information on manners and ettiquette. Perhaps one of its best strengths is to give more specific direction on when to do certain things, such as kissing on the first date, sex, good first date spots, how much to spend, etc. The major drawback to it is that it seems to give fairly rigid advice as absolute rules, when in many cases the individual situation would call for a different action. There is also some contradictory advice from one chapter to another, but they are minor contradictions.
