WOW, even better than reading the "adult" version!
Over the years, I have thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Herriot's wonderful stories. When I found this book for my 7 year old daughter, I wasn't sure if she'd be able to follow along. What makes this book stand out is the fabulous drawings--they are full paged drawings, with not too much writing on each page. Each drawing is very detailed, perfectly matched to the accompanying text. I can't get over the talented illustrators (this book has two different ones, although the drawings are similar in appearance). I've loved re-reading these familiar stories and sharing them. This is one of the best books we've read this year, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it for a permanent library collection.

James Herriott.. the most wonderful writer
I think I have not had a more pleasant reading experience than sitting down next to a burning fire place, listening to my favorite antique clock ticking.. the patter of rain on the window panes and reading James Herriott. It is a memory of that afternoon that all these years later I have never forgotten. James Herriott is the most pleasant, relaxing, refreshing writer. Forget all the worries and cares and escape for a few minutes into a quiet world where the animals speak their own language.. A wonderful book, a wonderful writer. Thank You James Herriott for the memories.

Delightful at any age!
I am a huge fan of any of James Herriott's writing. I love to read. My daughter, however, has a reading disability and the whole reading process is tedious and frustrating for her. We usually read together. This was one book that she requested to read again and again and again. James Herriott's heartwarming stories translate well into the youthful reader's world. Even if you are not an animal lover, you will find yourself falling in love with the lovable creatures and their eclectic owners!

Wonderful, though more text than I wanted
I was very pleased by the large number of high-quality reproductions. Still, as far as I'm concerned there should have been *more*. The book contains (a rough count) about 280 pages containing text or mostly text, out of about 630 total pages. However, I'm very happy with the book.

Best Rauschenberg book ever!
Best book, I have ever bought

Excellent well presented book
The problem with art books is that they go out of print too quickly. This is a beautifully presented book on Rauschenberg that was released with the big retrospective at the Guggenheim in 97/98. Barnes and Noble still had copies avaiable as of Sept. 99, so check there -- they were even discounted!

"This is a really fascinating book, about an incredible woma
This is a terrific book that tells the story of a truly amazing woman and in the process, tells the story of hundreds of rhythym and blues performers and groups and the lives they led, in the early days of this important american music. The reader learns how Ms. Brown overcame unbelievable obstacles, both personal and business, and came out on top-in the process, initiating the creation of a great organization called The Rhythm and Blues Foundation, which is based in Washington DC, and exists for the purpose of helping to preserve the music and which provides cash awards and support for R&B pioneers.

A true R&B Legend
Ruth Brown has seen it all--from staying in sleazy segregated hotels on tour in Jim Crow America in the 40s and 50s to the top of the R&B charts in the 50s to later hearing her songs on the radio when she was broke and ignored by the record companies she helped build. This lady was the "diva" of R&B and still performs today to packed audiences. We're lucky to have this historical record of her life, for it is a reflection of what many black performers of her day had to go through before achieving the heights of musical stardom, and what they had to go through even after achieving the heights. A great lady and a great performer!

A good book for a long, hard day.
This book is the epitamy of heartwarming. After all the sad, depressing things that happen in today's world, this book (and all of James Herriot's stories) makes you feel a lot better. Perfect for kids, this book will warm the souls of everyone.

Even though I haven't read this book since I was younger, I remember it as having a perfect happy ending. Even if you don't buy it, you should at least go to the library and check it out. You might like it enough to buy it anyways :)

Heartwarming Story
Not having been familiar with the work of James Herriot before this book, I was happily surprised when I read this to my little cat-loving daughter this christmas season. This is a touching story which brought us both to tears, but gave a joyful smile as we reached the end of the story. Truly a story to be shared with every child at christmas!

Irresistable!
This picture book, although written for children, can be enjoyed by people of all ages, especially cat lovers! James Harriot has a style of story-telling that draws you in and doesn't let you go until you've finished the story. This story is just a small sampling of the many wonderful vet stories that Harriot has to tell.

Excellent
I borrowed this book from the library a week ago. Now I am going to purchase our own copy as my 3 year old daughter will be very disappointed when we have to take it back. I have lost count of the number of times we have read it, she wants to hear it time and time again. If you are a cat lover / owner, you will laugh and relate to the personalities of the cats. The illustrations are beautiful, the story funny and easy for children to follow. A must for every young child's bookshelf.

Beautiful artwork, sweet story, a favorite in our home.
I was first drawn to this book because the main character, Buddy, looks just like our own black and white cat. However, my six year old daughter fell in love with this book on the first reading. The artwork in this book is beautiful. The pages are covered from edge to edge with realistic-looking paintings and the text is simple and sweet. The story portrays a typical day in the life of a housepet, particularly Buddy who likes to copy the other animals in the house. My daughter asks me to read this book almost every night and I enjoy it as much as she does!

Excellent reading for my two year old
My two year old read this book over and over again. He loved it every time that he read it. The suspence was not too scary but just spooky enough to make him enjoy this book.

A Great, Great Book
I'm so excited to find this book still available; it was one of my son's favorites when he was small. A wonderful illustrated version of the old spooky story, the book is beautifully illustrated and a pleasure to read over and over and over again. The suspense builds as the reader is led from the "dark, dark wood" to a "dark, dark castle" and so on until the great surprise ending -- but I'll let you discover it yourself. Treat yourself to this treasure!

THE SAGA OF A WEE FAITHFUL DOG
I had been aware of this story for a number of years and
finally got around to reading it. The book takes place in
Edinburgh, Scotland. In the town square there's a drinking
fountain with a statue of a dog on the top. The bottom part
of the fountain has a water basin so that the dogs of the
town may also have a drink. The fountain was placed there
in memory of Greyfriar's Bobby who died in 1872.

This is a retelling of a true story about Bobby, a terrier
dog who remained loyal to his master, Jock even after his
master's death. There are apparently several books written
over the years telling the story, but this particular
publication has some of the most beautiful and touching
illustrations of Bobby.

Packaged as a book for children, this is a warm and loving
story of devotion and can be enjoyed by children and adults.
Every dog lover should see and read this book!

a heartwarming book with a message9
The Ghost of Greyfriars Bobby is a book I have been searching for for awhile. While doing my research,I was surprised, if not dissapointed, to find out that Bobby was not a scottie dog, as I am fond of scotties. I found the story to be quite spiritual. It carries a message as well as being an interesting story for animal lovers. The art work is it's strongest point. Ruth Brown's study of character spills over into the animal kingdom. The detail of each page adds so much to the story and your imagination. This book is a heartwarming story of devotion and community spirit. I am also aware that Ruth Brown also illistrated James Herriot's wonderful books! Jacqueline Howard

"The Bible for Bread Baking"
The Washington Post calls this book the bible for bread baking, and they are right on. This book is the best bread baking book I've come across. It gives techniques on actually making and baking a wide variety of breads. If you're looking for a way to make bread that comes out crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside, this book will help you. It's even beyond a bread baking book because it includes 118 recipes-everything from breads and rolls to pastries, muffins, and desserts. The recipes are easy to follow and ingredients are available at grocery stores-perfect for the at-home cook. The whole wheat pancake recipe is one of the many stand outs- absolutely mouth watering. If you're interested in baking breads among many, many other bread related recipes, I highly recommend this book.

Tassajara (and Ed Brown) stand the Test of Time
My current copy of the Tassajara Bread Book is a 1970 edition, and it is still my favorite (along with Tassajara Cooking, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be available). It has stood the test of time over the years, too many great recipes to just single out one. The Whole Wheat Pancakes, with some fresh blueberries added, is my favorite way to spoil guests. The best thing about the Tassajara books is that they indeed show you a method for cooking or baking, not just recipes to be followed.

Oil stains, flour stains, unidentifiable traces of the years, I don't think I'll ever part with my original copy, but with binding paste falling out now each time I open it and the cover unattached, I think it's time to get an updated copy. You won't go wrong with this book!

A Nicely-written Bread Book
Mr. Brown writes from the perspective of starting as a cook's helper, learning cooking by trail-and-error, and graduating to head cook of a monastery kitchen. His writing also reflects a Zen monk's reverence for food and the ritual of cooking.

The Tassajara Basic Yeasted Bread is discussed in detail. Chapters on yeasted bread, yeasted pastry, unyeasted bread, sourdough, pancakes, muffins and quickbreads, and desserts follow. Recipes stress the use of natural foods and grains. Most recipes include alternate ingredient suggestions.

I first used this cookbook to make the Tassajara Basic Yeasted Bread. I never before had made bread. The whole wheat dough was stiff. Mixing the dough was extremely hard work. Kneading the dough was agony. Making this bread taught me respect both for bread and for anyone who makes bread.

I recently rediscovered this cookbook while seeking a cornbread/muffin recipe that did not use shortening. I made muffins substituting molasses for honey and adding marjoram. My muffins were excellent both alone and with bean dishes.

Cooking is vastly underrated. One who cooks economically and maintains a clean, safe household is free to "Be All That You Can Be", an accomplishment that would make an Army drill sergeant or a Zen master proud. Mr. Brown's writing reflects that pride.

Meow...A Dark Dark Tail
A friend recommended we purchase this book for our 2 year old. We did and she loves it. I thought it might scare her, but it was quite the opposite. She points out the rabbits, owls and cats throughout the book and laughs when she sees the mouse at the end. A truly great book and a quick "read" too.

dark but not scary
A wonderful choice for young children at Halloween or any time of year. Reading this aloud is lots of fun -- you can make it seem scary as you go through each page, then watch your child's reaction at the end. My son wanted me to read this over and over. We also have fun looking for all the little critters in the forest: owls, bats, tiny glowing eyes peeking out of the dark places, the cat, even a badger!

Cute Cat
This book is rather cute and there is a cat that runs through the pages, making an appearance here and there. I loved the fact that this book presents itself as a "dark, dark" book and it really is funny that it is not a "dark" tale at all. The "darkness" is more about
the lack of light than it being about evil.

You start in a moor and walk through a woods. Then there is a dark castle and you walk up to the door. Once you enter the castle, you are in a dark hall and go up some dark stairs. You are in a fairy tale castle and then you see a dark passage. You are tempted to look behind a dark curtain and then the cat stands looking up at a dark cupboard.

The last page shows a mouse in a box with a rather frightened look on its face. So the only fear in this book is that the cat has found the mouse. Although it does seem the cat leaves the mouse sleeping happily in his little bed with his miniature candle and miniature slippers.

The beauty of this book is in the art. Ruth Brown studied art at the Birmingham College of Art and the Royal College of Art. She has worked on animated films for the BBC.

Meowingly Cute.
