A Wonderful Collection of Art
Rings is a wonderful compilation of art and artists in an incredibly unique collection. Each piece is discussed in order to help readers understand these contributions to the artistic world. This book is informative, asthetic and well worth the wait. I was fortunate enough to visit the exhibit in Atlanta and this is an incredible keepsake to remember it by.

A Biased View of Philosophy
"The One Minute Philosopher" is marketed as a sort of quick and easy guide to abstract philosophical terms; while this is true, Dr. Brown presents exclusively a Christian view. Large gaps in logic are common in his writing, and he states some ideas as absolute when they are in fact merely speculative. Brown is an obviously partial author, infusing his book with blatantly one-sided judgments. He is not giving the reader in-depth definitions; his rather shallow explanations are overly simplistic. "The One Minute Philosopher" might be better called "One Minute Guide to Catholic Thought". In fact, the Sophia Institute Press, which publishes an edition of the book, praised the work's usefulness "To get a hearing for Catholic truth and values today". Buy this book not to gain a more profound understanding of major concepts but to learn the Catholic view of them.

Great: Informative, Concise, to the Point
Do you really know the difference between character/personality? Discussion/Argument? Faith/Gullibility? Forgiveness/Pardon? Happiness/Pleasure? Peace/Truce? Honesty/Naivete? Norm/Average? Progress/Change? Prosperity/Wealth? Punishment/Revenge? Etc.? I'm a graduate philosophy student, and I must confess I am not always clear on the exact but important differences between terms such as the above and terms like them. In any sane conversation or discussion, knowing the fine differences between such related terms is crucial. Oftentimes, our views are clouded or our actions hindered because of misunderstanding of words, which might be quite inadvertent. Especially in our times, it is of great importance to know the difference between, for instance, peace and truce. This book will help!

In this fine work, philosopher Montague Brown presents the crucial differences between similar but importantly distinct expressions. Each pair of expressions is treated on a double-page, providing one with a quick reference guide to understanding the similarities and differences. A brief and easy-to-see one-line explanation is given for each expression, followed by deeper analysis of what it means. The paragraphs don't take longer than a minute to read. Each page has a thought-provoking quote from a notable figure relating to the term in question, and useful "ask yourself" questions are also provided to apply to one's own circumstances what one has learned.

All in all, this book is a successful attempt at informing people of fine but important differences of expressions, and it is a great tool for the philosopher and NON-philosopher (!), i.e. pretty much for anyone who wishes to engage in meaningful conversation.

The Quest for Moral Foundations: An Introduction to Ethics
Published in Paperback by Georgetown University Press (1996)
Author: Montague Brown
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

Good! Great!
A concise, and lucid and systematic introduction to ethical theories still prevailing nowadays.
The contents of the book are arranged in ways that lead readers to many topics progressively and in ways that weave these theories into a logically inter-connected whole, while the author's own position is clearly unfolded. The author has his own position! For example, he suggests that the ancient Greek's virtue ethics can be made, in some way, consistent with Kant's duty ethics (p. 104). This position needs more arguments, of course, than is presented in that book, but it is undeniably revealing, especially to beginners. This book has really done a fine job for those intending to come to terms with the ethics. Being a good book, it needs to be updated and needs to be more concerned with the contemporary issues. We hope to see its revised and enlarged edition come out soon!
