The book tells it as I remember it.
I worked for Bill and Morris on Kodiak around the same time as the author. I went to visit Morris a few years ago and he gave me a copy of this book. He said it was close to the real thing. Since Bill told most of the stories and Bill was a real story teller, some things may have been a little em-BILL-ished so to speak. If you have ever sat in a hunting camp telling stories around a wood stove at night then you know what I mean. The parts of the book that were told to the author by Morris are dead on the mark. Morris didn't talk much and when he did he told it like it was. The book describes pretty well what it was like to hunt with Bill and Morris on Kodiak Island. It was hard, cold, wet, tireing work most of the time. I loved it. I would do it again if I had the chance. I read the book as I know most of the guys that worked for P&T do, just to bring back memories of how it was.

You'll wish you were there!
I was so enthralled with this book that I could imagine setting out on a hunt with the brown bear men. I was transported back to a time that can never again be. A time when fair chase and hard work were what a hunt was about. The character of these men is such that today it is hard to imagine finding anyone like that. I only wish I could have experienced the era these men lived in. A GREAT book.

A great book about the Kodiak Brown Bear!
I found this book to be really informative about the ways of the brown bear on Kodiak Island. These two men are truly great men of conservation ecology. The book is easy reading and keeps you interested throughout the book, craving more information about the bears and the lives of these men. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in bears or Kodiak Island.

THE book to have re: the beans
For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

A lifesaver
Renal physiology can be very difficult to truly understand, and yet an understanding of it is essential to understanding so many aspects of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Studying diuretics for cardio pharm is nightmarish unless you understand the physiology of the loop of Henle. Vander takes this difficult yet important subject and makes it easy to understand. The book reads extremely quickly, and the flow-charts and diagrams are amazing. I never even opened Berne & Levy for renal phys--I read Vander's book (which is no longer than B&L's renal chapters) and cruised through renal phys. I am writing this review now, a year after I took physiology, because I am now studying for the USMLE Step 1. I have not looked at Vander's book in a year, but I still remember renal phys, and reviewing it now is the easiest part of my studying (the only easy part, in fact). That is because, thanks to Vander, I actually understand renal physiology. A great book!!

Vander on the kidneys.
For any medical student that needs a comprehensive, but easily understood explanation of the structure and function of kidneys, I highly recommend Renal Physiology by Vander. It is very well written, and covers all the basic principles that you will need to know to understand pathologies associated with the kidneys.

Power/Holiness/Evangelism: Rediscovering God's Purity, Power
I purchased this book as a second thought, and found out I got more than I bargained for. The level of expertise and experience with God impressed me initially, but it was the depth of each topic presented by each of the authors that shocked me. When dealing with God and spiritual subjects in books, there are so many approaches, and many that are really weird, but in this book the contributing authors do much to show by scriptures and experience the reality of the need for the church to be seeking God's power, holiness, and evangelistic outreach to the human race. This is not a book of testimonies alone, but scriptures and the reality of the topics listed in the title. Another book that assisted me in certain sections of this book was I Give You Authority by Charles Kraft. Though much different in subject, it assisted me in understanding some things that are occurring in the South American churches. I highly recommend this book for one's bookself, not only for reading, but as a text book for what is happening in Christianity today.

Unity and Passion for God
The chapters are written by individuals from various backgrounds who are sensing the Holy Spirit drawing them into a closer relationship with God. This purity of heart has been documented in past and present revivals around the world.

Excellent Book for the Wards
This is an excellent book for pediatric residents and medical students in pediatric rotations. The book is organized by symptom e.g. abdominal pain, chronic cough, and it provides a comprehensive list of differential diagnosis, flow charts for diagnosis, as well as short discussions on most common diseases associated with that particular symptom. A must for pediatric rounds.

Helpful for ESL Class
When I came upon the book, Index Card Games for ESL, I was a little skeptical at first. It sounded like alot of work, or trouble. However, after reading through this book, and using it in my class, I found it to be extremely helpful in teaching english concepts very quickly, it was fun, and it was very easy. I took paper and cut it up into squares,( because I didn't have index cards) and quickly wrote out one of the games . My students loved the interaction that it gave with each other. It helped them to practice their english skills with each other, it also helped them with their english applications. The first game we played was matching synonyms. It was fun for us all! It was such a change from what we had been using. I had to look up the book to see if there was another edition of the book! And there is! I can't wait to see it as well.

The Ministry of Finance: Bureaucratic Practices and the Tran
Book Review by Janet Hunter, Business History

The role of the Japanese government, in particular that of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), in shaping industrial policy and export success in Japan since World War Two has been much debated. In recent years, however, with evident failings in the operation of financial institutions, financial regulation and financial probity, it is the activities of the Japanese Ministry of Finance (MoF) that have come under scrutiny both inside and outside Japan. J. Robert Brown, Jr.'s book is the first English-language monograph to analyse the recent travails of Japan's Finance Ministry in the context of longer term developments. Brown describes how during the early post-war years the priorities set by economic recovery and capital shortages generated a system in which the MoF acted as the agent of stability and recovery. It acquired enormous domestic power from its control over the budget process, and an international reputation for its influence over financial markets, particularly in regulating th e division between banking and securities business initiated under the Occupation. Its position was rooted in informal and personal links and information flow, as well as administrative guidance. Brown describes how the operation of the ministry itself, and its locus in broader decision-making structures, engendered risk aversion, and hindered initiative, innovation and leadership, but the advantages of the system ensured that it continued to operate with a degree of effectiveness as long as the economy grew rapidly. By the early 1970s, however, the original raison d'etre of the banking-securities division was gone. The MoF accepted the need for financial reform, but less so the concomitant and inevitable reduction in its own influence. While the pressure for reform from outside Japan was considerable, the MoF was weak in the face of political pressure and vested interests, and progress was slow until the scandals of the 1980s brought the big securities companies into public disrepute.

The MoF was likewise slow in coping promptly with the banking difficulties that followed the collapse of the Bubble economy in the late 1980s. Historical memories of 1920s banking crises led officials to conceal the real extent of the problems that existed, and resulted in constant attempts to play for time. Banks, like securities companies, were effective in manipulating political pressure, and not until 1995 was the first commercial bank permitted to fail. Incidents such as the Daiwa scandal in New York and the jusen (housing loan companies) losses further exposed the inadequacy of informal reporting, and the need for greater openness for effective regulation.

In describing this course of events, Brown demonstrates a process of painful adjustment in which lessons have been learnt only slowly. He argues that the MoF is far from having overwhelming power, even over the budget, and that politicians have not hesitated to overrule MoF officials when it has been in their constituency or party interest to do so. As such, the ongoing reform of both the financial sector and the MoF itself has a political dimension. Brown concludes, however, that the resolution of the bureaucracy's role must rest with the bureaucracy itself. Japan should, moreover, think carefully before going down the path of any explicitly US model, or breaking up or excessively weakening the MoF.

Brown has written a readable and accessible book, informative for both non-specialist and specialist, for both practitioner and academic. Based on extensive interviews with MoF officials, politicians and private sector financial institution employees, as well as on written sources, it has a refreshing 'down to earth' quality about it. Unlike many works on contemporary Japan, it locates the current problems in a longer term perspective, and as such will be a useful source of reference for business historians. Despite its high price it is likely to be better used than many more learned volumes, and should be welcomed as a valuable addition to the literature.

Excellent instruction manual for ju-jitsu enthusiasts.....
Earlier works by Robert Clark have suffered from the 'dark photograph' syndrome found in many martial arts books.

This publication shows the improvement that can be achieved with first-class camera work and proper use of placing Tori and Uke in light and dark Gi (clothing for practise).

Anyone who is making a serious attempt to improve their range of techniques for grading purposes etc. would do well to purchase this book as it is an easy reference to throws, ground techniques and finishes.

I have also purchased the White to Green Belt and the Black belt publications in the same series, which are equally high quality publications.

Buy these books, they are worth every penny in saving your practise time and improving your rate of progress.

A clear, competent and concise instruction book
This book, like the others in this series comes highly recommended.

Robert Clark is one of the biggest names in British ju-jitsu. This book illustrates the moves required to pass his "World Ju-jitsu Federation" grading scheme.

Since he was one of the first on the scene in the UK it has had a great influence.

This book provides a solid foundation for any jitsuka. It is clearly illustrated (with the author performing the moves) and well presented.

A "must have" book.

Great book for any one who wants to learn Jiu-Jitsu.
A great book. I would recommend to anyone. Step by Step instructions. Great for beginners.
