Malamute Owners Must-Have!
I have owned three malamutes and I must say this is the malamute owners must-have book. Out of all the Alaskan Malamute books around I would recommend this to anyone. The Alaskan Malamute Yestereday and Today is in my book collection and is my most prized book of all. The information is immeasurable and the photos are "breathtaking". Definately not one to pass up, regardless of the hardcover price.

A comprehensive and enjoyable read for all Malamute owners.
I have owned, bred and showed Alaskan Malamutes in Australia since 1986. I believe I have had the opportunity to own and read most of the best titles of this breed. A.M. Yesterday & Today is in my opinion the ' cream of any publication ' written about Malamutes. I recommend it to all my puppy buyers....Delecrouix Kennels...Australia.

Superb book on a majestic breed!
Here it is all in one place: history, care, selection, and activities of Alaskan Malamutes. The breed history not only includes information on founding kennels and influential dogs but also the expeditions on which they were a part of. It doesn't try to sugar coat "the good, the bad and the ugly" of these expeditions. Want to show your Mal? There's a great chapter on this as well, including show grooming information that's valuable to any northern breed owner. The illustrations and photos are excellent, and includes some in color. A must-have for the serious Malamute fancier! Bravo! This is a book I've been waiting for!

Salinger for kids
I loved this book when I was twelve (the same age as Andrew). It is chock full of verisimilitude and I loved the style, which is conversational without being hackneyed.

When in my twenties, I read Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye." A few pages into it, I said "HEY!" Holden Caulfield's voice is almost exactly the same as Andrew Kellogg's. Barbara Brooks Wallace cannot convince me she was not inspired by Salinger.

This book is truly a "Big Deal"
Barbra Brooks Wallace has written a book for youth that brings home what it is like to grow up unappreciated and lonely in a new community. Andrew, the book's hero, moves with his family to Washington DC and immediately begins facing all of the troubles a boy in junior high must face: the fears that go along with being the "new kid," bullies, loneliness, a big brother with no time for him unless he is bossing him around, and a kid sister he finds himself having to take care of. Top it off with a mother who has to go away for a while, and it is a wonder Andrew doesn't go crazy! Blessed with smarts and a wry sense of humor, however, Andrew rises to the challenges (even when he doesn't want to) and truly becomes the "big deal."

Great early teen reading!
This book brings back memories of my childhood. It's a story of a boy who moved with his family to Washington D.C. and tells about his struggles with childhood, and getting no respect. It is a very funny book for kids, and was the first book I remember laughing out loud while reading!

The Perfect Tomboy Tale
I read this book back in 5th grade, too and really loved it...Claudia and I were in the same boat back then! Now that I teach, I read it each year to my 4th graders. It's an nice little history lesson on the old gender and peer roles parents used to assign to us and all my kids can relate to the despair of being picked on, or having your friends change and mature around you before you're ready to.

CLAUDIA
I first read this book as a fifth grader back in the 1970's. It helped me then to understand that other kids had problems, just like I did, and that we could find viable solutions to our problems without relying on others.

Claudia would be good for fourth-seventh graders to read independently, or for a read-aloud to second and third graders. Many life skills are addressed along with applying them through family and friends.

Excellent resource
I'm earning my degree in counseling and will be working with adults and children who have experienced trauma. This book is excellent. It's geared toward parents and provides easy-to-read, thoughtful advice on how to talk to children about some very difficult issues. It provides typical reactions for each age group for each situation and great advice on how to speak to and reassure the child. This book will be valuable for my own library and I will definitely be recommending it to parents of young clients.

The Scared Child a must for parents and teachers
In light of the events of September 11,2001,no book could be timelier than The Scared Child by Barbara Brooks and Paula Siegel.Brooks,a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating families who have experienced traumatic life events, has written a valuable handbook for anyone who interacts with children. The Scared Child discusses the many different kinds of trauma that children may encounter in their lives. This book teaches some appropriate methods of helping children to understand and be reassured that there is support for them at a confusing and painful time in their lives. The author explains debriefing,a careful method of drawing out a child's feelings and asking questions so that the adult may calm any fears that they may have concerning the traumatic event. This guide can be easily read in its entirety to gain a comprehensive understanding of childhood trauma and debriefing or used simply to reference a specific kind of trauma. The text is well organized and gives detailed step-by-step instructions for talking with children about their ordeal. This book speaks to parents or guardians, but would be extremely useful for teachers or anyone who works with children.

Wonderful book - excellent reading!!!
Barbara Tomblin, a U.S. naval historian, was my favorite professor at Rutgers University, and her War, Peace and Military in the United States classes were phenomenal. This book is an excellent portrayal of the nurses during WWII - through good times and bad. It's easy to read, once you start - you can't stop. I hope to read more works by Dr. Tomblin in the near future.

Kids will laugh and learn.
Kids will love the attractive illustrations that effectively present the concept of opposites. The illustrations are very creative and attractive and helps children to easily grasp the concept being taught. The use of pumpkins to accomplish that makes it all the more fun. I think the presentation of the concept is unique and sustains readers interest.

An Unforgettable Old Favorite
"Peppermints in the Parlor" is one of those books you never forget. The characters creep into your heart, curl up there, and won't leave. Emily, the little girl who finds herself in frightening and inexplicable distress at the beginning of the book, has become more like a real little girl to me each time I've read the book. In fact, she becomes more like ME every time I read her story. Last summer some people in Alexandria, Virginia, produced the novel as a musical and I realized after seeing the characters on the stage that the book is so vivid it really needs no dramatization (although the musical version was a lot of fun and I liked the songs.) I can hear the characters talking as I read. I have favorite scenes that are fresh every time I read them: an incident regarding a tea bag that never fails to shock me; the day when a kitten arrives at Sugarhill Hall bringing with it tremendous hope for the old people. I feel bad for Emily and the other characters as they struggle with the miseries at the beautiful old house, but I know that things will work out in the end just as I would have them do. I'm looking forward to the audio version.

Found It
I have not read this book in a long time and have been searching for it. I think it is an excellent piece of literature that isn't read enough. When I was in 4rth grade my teacher read it to the class. It has been one of my favorite books since! This book brings to my mind the story of A Little Princess! I think that Peppermints in the Parlor is alot like A Little Princess in many different ways. One way they are alike is that both young girls are orphaned(or so they think). Both are treated poorly and still are very polite-like girls. I enjoyed the personalities of the characters as much as the plot which was truly amazing. It is a book that is still read to the students in my old teachers class today because it is something you can learn from and enjoy. Read it, you won't regret it!

Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peppermints in the Parlor is a terrific book! As a young girl Emily Luccock lost both of her parents. She went to live with her aunt and uncle in their mansion, Suger Hill Hall. But when she arrives at the house, everything is not as she expects. Two stange and mean women, strange shodows in the parlor, and the mansion darker and gloomier than ever! And most of all where is her Uncle Twice, and why does Aunt Twice seems to be a prisoner in her own house?

I loved this book from the very first page, to the very last! I reccomend this book to everyone to read! (It's a great book to use for a book report!!)
