Signs of Life: A Memoir of Dying and Discovery

Going Beyond the Limits of Medicine
Tim Brookes offers a well written, engaging account of the dying and death process. My father was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few weeks ago and a dear friend put this book in my hands. It is a tribute to life and dignity in dying. As I write this we are still in the middle of searching for treatment and I find the words of this book comforting and a guide of sorts to the process of living, essentially with a death sentence. The author shines a light on a process we are all engaged in, as we all eventually face the dying process. This book would be helpful for family members as well as professionls...and not only those dealing with cancer.

An uplifting book on a difficult subject
When my grandmother was diagnosed terminally ill(suffering from COPD), the family chose hospice care instead of a nursing home. I went to the library to get a book on hospice and this is the book that carried me through the heartbreaking yet beautiful last week of my beloved Nany's life. I know that every dying experience is different, but there were similarities between the author's mother and my grandmother's. It gave me great comfort to read Mr. Brookes words as I sat beside my grandmother's bedside. Many thanks for putting into words what my family and I were observing and feeling.

A journey towards life through the experience of death
Tim Brookes very eloquently voiced some of my own thoughts, feelings and struggles as I experienced my mother's death from cancer 2 months ago. It is a time of great intimacy and discovery about the very meaning of life. Our culture's beliefs and fears around death are interwoven with his very personal story, which he shares with great poignancy. This book is NOT a downer but a tribute to life. It is HIGHLY recommended for everyone, as death is a part of everyone's life

Great loo book
What do you expect from a book of Limericks from the long running radio comedy show? Wordsworth?

These constitute the cutting edge of modern limericks from some of the best (or worst, depending whether you like puns etc) wordsmiths in the business. This is the ideal book to set beside your loo.

The only Mornington Crescent Guide you'll ever need! Or get.
Well, I'll start out the game with a bold, unorthodox move: Lancaster Gate. Your turn, and please remember that choosing alternate Sunday-only stations are not valid in the Amazon.com championship versions of the game, that Aldwych Station, though closed, is still a valid choice when backed into one of Mr. Garden's patented cross-hatch ploys, and of course I shouldn't need to remind you that choosing Jubilee Line Extension stations is still regarded as hopelessly amateur; should you choose to counter with Canada Water, you will be met with derisive giggles. Your move.

If the above doesn't mean anything to you, you're not a fan of the bewildering game of Mornington Crescent, and this is not the book for you. Go pick up a Bill Oddie birding book instead. On the other hand, if the above inspired you to snap out "Gants Hill" with authority and a smirk, then sprint, don't crawl, to pick up the only *authorized* Mornington Crescent companion (all others are mere shadows).

Seriously (and at the risk of ruining the joke) this is a humor book based on the popular BBC radio quiz show "I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue." British quiz shows like these, far from being a challenge to ordinary citizens to answer tough trivia, are more frequently a showcase for celebrities to show off their comic skills (think "Whose Line is It Anyway" rather than "Who Want to Be a Millionaire"). By far the most cheer-eliciting segment of ISIHAC is "Mornington Crescent," a round-table game in which the panelists must name London Underground stations, and the first to name Mornington Crescent is the winner. Sound simple? Well, it would be...if there were truly any rules other than to be funny while doing so...

If you're a fan of BBC radio comedy and you're in on the joke, this book is a must have, with Mornington Crescent history, Q&As, recipes, profiles, short stories (Charles Dickens versus Lewis Carroll in an especially ruthless and deadly game of MC)--everything a serious player of the game needs to know.

Except the rules.

Well, you can't expect them to give away *all* the answers, can you?

Catching My Breath: An Asthmatic Explores His Illness
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (1995)
Author: Tim Brookes
Amazon base price: $13.00

Good asthma info, but unnecessary political commentary
This book contains a lot of useful and interesting information on asthma. The vast majority of it is well-written and easy-to-understand. Readers who are not scientifically-inclined should skip over the section on the anatomy and physiology of the human immune response. Anyone with a good foundation of and interest in biology and the health sciences could follow it, but it is probably too technical for the average lay reader.

My main complaint about the book is the complete lack of footnotes and bibliography. This makes it difficult to impossible to substantiate some of the data or refer to his sources for further reading.

My second complaint is the author's habit of trying to weave his own theories on economics/politics/sociology into his presentation on the incidence of asthma, medical priorities, access to health care and other social services, etc. Based on his personal philosophy, he makes many assertions about cause and effect without any statistics to back him up. I would have enjoyed it more if Mr. Brookes had stuck to the facts about asthma and spared the reader his political ideology and theories on the topic.

Still, I enjoyed the book and would read other titles by this author.

An insider's look at adult asthma
This book is a skillfully woven tapestry of personal journey and medical fact. Tim Brookes tells his story of coping with his asthma in an easy-to-read narrative style. The frustrations of dealing with the health care industry, employers, and friends are voiced, as well as the realities of life-style limitations imposed by the disease. Perhaps the best part of all is the accurate medical info that dispels myths and clears up some confusion about treatment plans. If you are an asthmatic, are married to one

'A Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow': An American Hitchhiking Odyssey

Slow to Start - Difficult to Finish
I thought this book was about a hitchhiking experience, but was suprised to find the author taking buses or riding with his photographer from New York City into PA, then from Ohio well into Wyoming. I found his writing style to be rambling and uninteresting, and was unable to keep reading after 100 pages or so. Had he truly hitchhiked, and kept to stories about hitchhiking, he probably would have written a great book.

entertaining in spots, but overall falls a bit short
I did enjoy many parts of this account of the author's adventures hitchhiking (and driving with his photographer) across the U.S. I have a few criticisms though: 1 -- he spends chapters talking about the great photos the photographer is supposedly taking, but the photo section only has a measly 13! What happened to all the photos????? 2 -- there are many grammatical and typographical mistakes. In fact, the reader before me must have been bothered because he/she circled all of them. 3 -- after a while, it is easy to lose interest in his account. I'm not trying to nitpick, as I did like the author's dry wit and detailed recounting of American cities and sights. However, this book is definitely not as interesting as many other travel/adventure books I've read. It doesn't try to be pretentious or draw grand conclusions about life (thank goodness) which makes it more palatable, but it's still not a great travel book. The prose kind of dries up in the second half.

A Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow
Very entertaining!! After 25 years of the same old same old, Tim Brookes decides to revisit his past, and hitch-hike across the country and back, the same way that he did in 1973 when he was just 20 years old. Some of the random encounters he has leaves one to wonder, are we really in control, or is there something out there that pulls people to each other. A great book all around!
