Profound insite and healing!
This incredible book has been a profound influence in my process of healing. I read it at the recommendation of a friend and have been grateful eversince. I have often found myself referring back to it's rich pages to refresh my mind with it's simple and sensible, yet profound insights. Dorothy uses a cluster of some of the psychological schools of thought. This allows for a more comprehensive view of the what and how of both self-esteem and the healing process. I found the intermittent summations of the "basic ideas" very helpful. I'm confident that each person who reads it with the intent to put to practice the exercises she provides would benefit immensely. I think that they can help accelerate the learning and healing process. Do put your heart into it! May you to reap in great abundance the healing and the wisdom that you seek.
Great book for those seeking to heal and change.
My friend used this book some 20 years ago to change his life. About 3 years ago, he told me about it and it changed my life. Now I'm letting everyone who I feel need help to know about this book.
I like to wonder in the bookstore and look for old , small books. Written decades ago, if they survived all these years and still stand on the bookshelf, there must be something great about them. Unfortunately you cannot do this on an Online bookstore. Hence this review.
Some good solid advice
While reading this book, I expected a little more. But after I finished it, I ended up using some of the advice to help heal a lot of post divorce pain. For that reason, I would recommend it to anyone looking to advance past what self blame and low self esteem can do.

Excellent for parents af any age children.Should be required
I am a nurse with three children ages 3 to 13, all boys. I wish I'd known about this book before leaving the hospital with my first! I plan to give a copy to all my brothers ',sisters, and especially my mother so that she can be a better grandmother in this area. Every teacher from nursery through high school should also be required to read it. We all need to be reminded of what is truly important in helping every person become the best they can be, not what we want them to be.
One of the best parenting (and inter-relating) books ever
The whole idea of self-esteem has been misrepresented and mocked in recent years. People who don't really underatand the concept think it means falsely praising children and giving them an unrealistically inflated sense of their abilities or an annoying conceit. What it really means is letting the child know he or she is lovable and worthwhile, which every human being certainly is to begin with. Most all parents feel this about their children in some ways--they love them--but we can communicate otherwise and end up making the child feel inadequate, unloved, that only performance brings approval. The book is beautifully and compellingly written and can really help you see the way if you're feeling uncertain of your parenting or down about how your children are behaving. I always felt better and inspired after reading it and thought of it as a gift to myself and my family--it helped me remember what is really important and also gave me definite ideas about how to parent more effectively, with pertinent information about what kids need at different ages. Along with How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk, I think it's the best there is!
A Must for learning about your child's needs
I received this book as a gift 13 years ago. It became the main resource book I used while raising my kids. I now give it out to others as gifts. It helped me to get through the "temper tantrums". It teaches ways to help work through difficult times by understanding your childs need for expression and gives you examples and tools to help strengthen your childs self esteem. Good Self esteem is so important in children and it begins to develope from birth. This book is easy to ready and re-read as you go through each phase of your childs developement.
