wonderful
This is a wonderful book with lots of amazing wolf and landscape pictures. While some people might be disturb by some of the dead animals in the picture, as a animal lover I reckon this book had shown the reality of the nature truthfully, and I really love this book.

Beautiful Photos
This is an excellent book on artic wolves. I enjoyed reading about their lives. If you are not in the mood to read the photos are worth the cost of the book.

It takes a village-the wolf still knows what we've forgotten
Brandenburg's experience shows the wolf as a loving and compassionate family-oriented animal that is as wild at heart as they come. These highly intelligent creatures seemed to stay a step ahead of their distant watchers. This leads to some hilarious encounters and a tear jerking ending. Follow this up with "Brother Wolf."

...from an "old Charlie Guide"
If you want to know about the Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base or learn about a rich tradition of Scout canoeing and the wilderness experience, this book is required reading. If you thought you had a pretty good idea of what Charlie's place is about, you will be amazed by the new stories and lore that you will read in these pages. You will learn about the "movers and shakers" at the Base, including Charles L. Sommers, Carlos Chase, Frank Bean, Parley Tuttle, Hod Ludlow, Henry Bradlich, Cliff Hanson, and Sandy Bridges. You will learn about the special relationship that the Base has enjoyed with Sig Olson, Bob Cary, Jim Brandenburg, Sam Cook, Joe Seliga, Real Berard, and Steve Fossett. Described in time slices, the history of the Base is carefully laid out as the first trips are launched from Winton, the lodge gets built, the Canadian program is established, and the food and gear are developed and adapted. To the story of the Base, add a bit of trail spice and some beautiful photography by Jim Brandenburg, and you begin to understand why you need to own a copy. Gene Felton has done a masterful job of gathering the stories of the Base, describing a program that has touched the lives of thousands of Scouts, Scout leaders, and staffers over a 75 year span. Gene tells the story with humor, and with an obvious reverence for the Base's program and its colorful tradition. Many of us share your love for this very special place, Gene. Thank you very much.

Black and White Beauty
Jim Brandenburg once again demonstrates why his photos are truly "works of art". In Mystic Whitetails he has created a beautiful example of how black and white photography often reveals more than color. This unusual calendar is a visual treat with its use of texture and light and there is a definite mystical and almost surreal quality to each of the images Mr. Brandenburg has chosen. He has the artistic vision to "see" what others may miss and then show us. This is a gift that will not disappoint. I purchased it sight unseen based only on the fact that Jim Brandenburg had taken the pictures. The beauty and depth of the photos will make you go back and take a second and third look and you may never think of a deer in the same way again. A wonderful way to celebrate the year 2001.

UNIQUE IN ITS CONTENT, STUNNING PHOTOS.
The ecosystem of the Namib Desert is absolutely fascinating. Even though I read this several years ago with my children, I occasionally think back to this desert of fog and the life that depends upon it. And of course Brandenburg's photos are always top-notch.

INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL photography!
I actually bought the AUDIO version of BROTHER WOLF. I listened to it and was amazed at the thoughts and insights. This book was written BEFORE wolves were reintroduced into YellowStone. I was especially won over by the descriptions of the relationships of wolf and man and the relationship with the ravens. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to purchase the book as a gift for someone. I knew the author was a photographer but I guess I totally forgot about the fact that there might be PICTURES. When the book came, I was enthralled with this icing on the cake. So of course, I'm keeping the book and ordering another for the gift.

A beautiful collection of pictures and words.
This is a wonderful book. Jim Brandenburg does a superb job of blending words with pictures to tell his story of the wolves of Ravenwood. This book is a definite "must" for all wolf lovers!

Informative and objective
Jim Brandenburg starts off his book "Brother Wolf: A Forgotten Promise" with a heart rending letter from one who has evolved right next to us, The Wolf. He describes (anthropomorphically) the way in which the wolf must view us. Strange and getting stranger, the wolf doesn't feel that he knows us any longer. After that Brandenburg becomes serious presenting the wolf not as the Devil of mythology, nor as the Angel of the new animal loving mythology. Instead he chooses to present the wolf as it is, a highly specialised predator filling its' important niche in our ecosystem. The text is easily understood by all. Complex behavioral jargon is avoided as this book was meant obviously to give the general public an idea of some of the facts surrounding this animal. The photography is of course a beautiful example of why Brandenburgs photos are so popularly appealing. He shoots just as he writes, exactly what the animals are. His pictures communicate a depth of understanding that only someone who truly knows the wolf can achieve. If you wish to begin your own store of knowledge on the wolf "Brother Wolf" is an excellent place to start.

Balancing The Scales of Nature
A study in the perserverance and dedication of a group of people to bring the wolf back to its own enviroment in the wildernesses of Yellowstone Montanna. Full of information this book will elate you as well as sadden you, but the winner here of course is the wolf who once more runs free on his land.

Excellent overview of the wolf's history & current issues
Jim Brandenberg always brings the wolf into our homes vividly and with great skill through his photographs, and in this book, these exquisite photos are paired up with the informative writing of Stephen Swinburne. Swinburne covers an excellent range of topics in this short (but highly-informative) book, including the history of the wolf's extermination in this country, early conservationists, wolf behavior and social structure, myth-busting, the Yellowstone project, and the wolf's future prospects.

He brings in quotes and information from Leopold, Mech, Bangs, Askins, and many other notable figures in the wolf conservation movement to give correct facts and information. I wouldn't call this a book for younger children; it's written at perhaps a teenager's level, and younger children might find the statistics and assorted other information boring. However, Swinburne does cover the bittersweet story of wolves Numbers Nine and Ten, which personalizes the struggles wolves today face.

Swinburne manages to succinctly cover most of the important issues in this relatively brief book (about a half hour's read, perhaps 45 minutes,) and it's a great way to educate yourself or someone else on the basics of wolf conservation. Highly-recommended!

What a great book!
I just took a look at this book and was so impressed. The subject is fascinating, of course, but I'm especially taken with the clear, cogent writing, the terrific quotes, and the truly remarkable photographs. I definitely recommend this for any kid (or adult, for that matter) with an interest in wildlife.

I normally hesitate to use this word, but...profound.
I'm a verbal type; I'd rather read a beautifully written description of a frozen lake than stare at a picture of it anytime. Even knowing that, my mother gave me this book several years ago, and I fell in love. I sat with it for hours, seeing, dreaming, and I still take it down often to do the same again. The photographer, Jim Brandenburg, set himself the challenge of taking only one photograph each day for three months, in the boreal forest where he makes his home. The result is a portrait of life as many of us can never experience it: not just "calendar shots," but pictures that show the cruelty of man, the certainty of death, the very simple beauty of a single bright leaf burning on the dark, still waters of an evening pond. Some photos are amazing in themselves and some seem ordinary in the extreme, but it is important to take them as a whole, and see what you learn from the journey.

Simply amazing, on many levels
Jim Brandenburg has been among my favorite photographers for years, and I've always been overwhelmed by his ability to capture a moment in time so perfectly. _Chased by the Light_ definitely didn't disappoint me at all; in fact, it gave me an entirely new respect and admiration for this amazing man.

Most folks know that published photographers often shoot dozens or hundreds of rolls of film for every shot that is published, and Jim is no exception to the rule. What he's done with this self-assignment, only one frame per day for 90 days, shows his courage as well as his commitment to his art. I can't imagine the number of beautiful scenes he must have passed up, perhaps in anguish, knowing he could capture it, if only he broke his own rule "just this once." But, he pressed on, searching for His Perfect Moment of the Day. Truly remarkable.

Some of the photos presented in this book are less than perfect; Jim's willingness to publish them as is (apart from a bit of cropping, tone and color correction, he says) demonstrates his love of photography, his humbleness, and his human-ness. Most of the shots are better than many of us could take on our best days, with a full roll - that he is able to take only one picture, and come up with something like his 'Maple leaf in pond" piece is beyond amazing.

His narrative is really what makes the book, though; read any of his books, and you'll find yourself drawn onward by his voice as well as his photos, because he gives you a peek of what goes on behind the lens, who the person is who takes the pictures, and why a particular shot appealed to him (or how he stumbled upon it completely by chance.) Jim's photos makes it look easy, but his words let us know his struggles as well as his passion for his subjects.

It takes remarkable skills to find the wildlife shots he has - his abilities as a tracker must be absolutely incredible. Most of us will never see the animals shown here in their natural, undisturbed settings. Fortunately for us, Jim brings back some of his experiences by which we may experience a vicarious thrill.

I have only a few people in this world whom I call "role models," but Jim Brandenburg is among them. Thanks to this book, I now have even more reason to love this man, his devotion to nature, and his photographs.

Amazing restraint-amazing photography
Being from Minnesota and a lover of nature, the subject matter of this book intrigued me. Having done photography as an advanced amateur most of my life, much of it in the same areas Jim shoots, I am completely awestruck at his ability to capture such a sense of the northwoods with only one frame a day. Besides being a visually stunning work, it gives us "wannabes" food for thought. Maybe hunting that perfect frame would help us capture the essence we want, instead of firing off a whole roll of film. Myself, I know that if I ever encounter a wolf in the wild up close, I won't remember this advice but will take a whole roll, but maybe after my first encounter, the next one will show thought, inspired by this book.

Wonderful wolf book for children
Jim Brandenburg is one of my favorite wolf photographers & authors, and I absolutely love every book of his that I've read. I wasn't paying quite close enough attention to this book when I bought it; I didn't realize it was a children's book! Still, as disappointed as I initially was, as I flipped through it, I realized what a great vehicle this book is to educate children about wolves - he covers issues of dominant and submissive roles within the pack, the role of the omega wolf (Scruffy's place in the pack,) and the hardships of wolves' lives in the Arctic. The photos are excellent, and the text is clearly-written and in large print, very easy for new readers to work through....

Incredible book!
This is the best non-fiction wolf book I have ever read. It gave me a three dimensional portrait of a member of a wolf pack. My heartbreak comes because the author didn't adopt him. What a wonderful book! I am so glad I picked this one up!

Very informative, fabulous photos
"To the Top of the World" is essentially a condensed version of Brandenberg's fantastic book, "White Wolf," and is perhaps a better book to acquaint younger readers with wolf-related issues. This brief volume contains information about human-wolf relations, myth-busting, and of course much about wolf behavior and pack relations. It's also a great way for someone of any age to learn about this magnificent, keystone predator.

The wolf has been maligned for centuries, and it's absolutely crucial that we teach our children the importance of the wolf's role in nature; we have only to look to Yellowstone for a direct object lesson in what losing the wolf does to an ecosystem. In 1930, the US Government proudly shot the last wolf in Yellowstone, and that began a 60-year slide into an environmental disaster. Now, with the wolf replaced only seven short years ago, the park is almost completely back in balance again. It's crucial to understand that there are no "extra" animals in nature, and this book is a wonderful way to begin that learning path.

Great information and picture source
The book is written about Jim Brandonbrug's year spent with the artic wolves. He gets to know the wolves personaly and they begin to trust him completly. A great book for doing reports on artic wolves
