Trauma and body symptoms
I have read many books on post-traumatic stress disorder, but I still found new and extremely helpful information in this book. This is one of the best books on post-traumatic stress, and body symptoms. I am a survivor of multiple forms of repeated trauma. In addition to three incidents of injury to my neck and knees I also store considerable amounts of pain throughout my body, related to past trauma. This book has specific and in depth information about body pain, disorders, and involuntary body movement caused by trauma. I also recommend EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), Body work (such as massage), and The Feldenkrais Method (a subtle movement form which re-trains the body and helps to move trauma out of your body). If you are a practitioner looking for a scientific perspective on the effects of car accident trauma compounded with childhood sexual abuse I recommend "The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease", but as a survivor I did not find that book to be very helpful.

Excellent explanation of WHY trauma affects us so deeply
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wondered why traumatic experiences, such as abuse, can have such a devastating impact on a person's mental health and well-being. This book explains HOW trauma affects the brain and the body, and offers insightful treatment recommendations for how to heal from trauma.
This book is a MUST for any therapist who works with traumatized clients!

Feedback from a Trauma victim
For 30 years, since a young child, I have suffered from a variety of unexplained problems, self-destructive behaviors and senseless actions. Until now, I have never understand what haunts and controls me. But I recently went to counciling and was diagnosed with PTSD so I purchased this book to learn more about it. There are no words to express the relief and overwhelming "connection" I felt when I started reading. I literally had to lay the book down after every paragraph to give myself a moment to absorb the impact of recognition I experienced when reading about myself. I have since been taking the book to my counciling sessions to discuss my revelations - one at a time. This book has saved my sanity - for once, I am beginning to understand the nameless fears and anxieties that have permeated every aspect of my life and robbed me of any real joy. This book lays down a very understandable framework of PSTD, from the development of the disorder to the healing work to move on. And I'm only on Chapter 4! *If you are a victim, take your time when reading this, it can be overwhelming to try to understand everything at once and I suggest a support system to share your discoveries with - best wishes - you CAN recover from this!!

Babette and my Granddad--a true tale
Due to having a "one cat" apartment, after BABETTE had been completed, my mother took Babette to live with her own parents in Flint, MI. As Clare told the story, "At first, my rather taciturn father regarded Babette with skepticism and said','She looks like a weasel! Of course, my mother loved Babette. However, Babette had made up her mind to win Dad and followed him around, looking up at him as if to say 'You great big wonderful man!'

In a few days, I noticed Daddy edging over on his chair to make room for Babette. Before I'd left he'd get up in the middle of the night to make sure she was covered in her basket. I've just had a letter saying that he now takes her walking on a leash, and doesn't care a whoop what the neighbors think of that!"

Both Babette and Mittens spent their retirement years living with my grandparents in their cozy little house. I am glad BABETTE is newly printed--even if it is listed as "out of print," it is brand-new.

read this you'll love Siamese Cats
I first read this over 30 years ago when I was six. It made me want a siamese cat. I have lived with a succession of them from age 16 onwards. The illustrations are still with me now. hurry up and reprint it, I'm sure Im not the only onewaiting to buy it.

Classic Book with Beautiful Illustrations
I first became familiar with Clare Newberry's books a couple of years ago when a lady came into the Barnes & Noble store where I work looking for 'Babette,' which was read to her as a little girl (at least some 40 years prior). At that time, the book was still out of print, but for some reason, this lady's request stuck in my mind.

I was very excited when I saw that 'Babette' and other Newberry titles had been reissued and were on display in our store. I love cats, and the charcoal illustrations in these books are simply precious (I have made my coworkers sick, gushing over them as I do!). I figure any book that someone will actively seek out after 40 or more years is a bona fide gem. I have since collected all of Newberry's cat books (Smudge, Mittens, April's Kittens...). Young cat & kitten lovers will especially prize these beautiful books!

Babette Cole=fun
I just picked up a copy of Cole's "Truelove" and it reminded me of her Beastly Birthday book which was a favorite read for me and the boys I babysat for. The book has fun pop up and pull out bonus features. For example, in the story the birthday boy- to-be invites everyone and everything he meets to his party ("...I'm sure my mom won't mind."). A rhino is on the guest list. With this page comes a removable "can" of Rhinoderant. "Just spray at charging rhino and rhino will fall about laughing". The cows invited are, of course, singing cows and come with a cow songbook. Cole loves to illustrate with lots of little details and witty ones at that. She puts her special touch on every page. (And hey, kids! This is IN ADDITION to all the little surprises like the two just mentioned. Bonus fun!)
Now remember that I havent read this book in years (the boys are getting older...sigh) but still I remember it fondly. It is so fun to share this book! Get really silly with it and kids will want to hear it over and over whether it's their birthday or unbirthday. Oh, the singing cow opera number ("moo moo bellisimo, vacca carrigio...")! The heavy metal band! (Read this page in your best Ozzy Osbourne Brit accent.) Robbers even! The grand finale pop-up with all the special guests! How could anyone NOT love this? It'd be a great b-day gift for any kid or fun loving grownup you know! I see now that it's out of print, though. :( I'd best buy me a copy for my collection of favorites before they're completely unavailable!

"Wooo Woo Wooooo"
This is another book review from Wolfie and Kansas, the boonie dogs from Toto, Guam. "Babette Cole's Dogs" is an illustrated pop-up book for puppies. While it lacks the depth of plot found in many of the books we review, the pictures are outstanding. The drawings are cartoonish, but they nonetheless capture the inner essence of dogs. The drawing of a dog rolling in cow poop brings back many fond memories. In the words of one of the captions in this book, Babette Cole's pictures make us want to "sing a howling song" in appreciation of her fine art

Forget the kids. Adult horsepeople adore this book!
Pass a copy of Babette Cole's Ponies at your next party. The horsepeople in the crowd will squeal! Anyone who loves pop-up books will laugh out loud. Only the best behaved of children deserve this book. And, perhaps, the most devilish of adults!

Another set of fabulous stories from Isak Dinesen
The stories in this book are completely in line with all her other works. Absolutely amazing! I highly recommend it to both newcomers and people who have already taken an interest in this author. But beware! Once you start reading the fantastic stories from this lady, you will want more.

Two fine stories
A couple of Isak Dinesen's best stories are here. Babette's Feast ,which is also a wonderful film, centers around a shared meal that brings grace and joy. An artist/cook gives all she has for a feast, two sisters, and her art. Sorrow-Acre resembles a folktale and shows the depths of a mothers love. Colleen Dewhurst does a superb reading.

"Putting on the brakes"- making trauma therapy safer
This book is refreshing, well written and easy to read - it is full of sound common sense (something often lacking these days!) It stands on its own or can be read as a useful adjunct to Babette's earlier excellent book on the psychophysiology of trauma. Babette's wisdom, style and honesty around the many different approaches and tools for working with trauma are covered extensively and most usefully as fascinating case studies. I especially appreciated the chapter on learning from our mistakes and failures and the surprising fact that clients respect honest ignorance and they often don't get enough of it in the therapeutic encounter. Adaptability is the key word here..that is adapting to the unique needs of each client.
Babette's view and one which I wholeheartedly share is that there is nothing we can categorically say works for sure in treating trauma and certainly no one treatment method that works for everybody. The main emphasis is on the necessity to create safety both inside and outside the treatment room. This opens up the field for lots of further debate. Fantastic stuff.

Accepting differences
Babette is an adorable baby mouse left alone when her mother, to escape the cat who lives in their Paris park, catches hold of a flyaway balloon just in time. Her mother is saved, but flies off into the cold winter sky. Babette has no family--until she is adopted by the most unlikely creature, a crow. As the mouse grows, she wonders why she does not look like her crow mother. That is how things are, the crow tells her, accepting her child's differences and loving her anyway.

Babette also learns the importance of self-reliance and determination. She refuses to be cowed by a cat, and eventually trains him to be nice. How could a mouse tame a cat? You'll just have to buy the book, and find out. Alyssa A. Lappen

A Cargo of Women: Susannah Watson and the Convicts of the Princess Royal

Australia's Fallen Women
This is a splendid history of the women who, in the 1830s, were convicted of various petty (and some not so petty) offenses and shipped off to the convict colonies of early Australia. Many American booksellers still stock "The Fatal Shore," but in many ways this is a more compelling story, not just because of its observations on early Victorian morality but also because of the fascinating, if tragic, story of its central character, Susannah Watson. Great adventure, great history.
