Smile Your Buck-Toothed Smile!
D2: MIGHTY DUCKS ARE BACK! is a very good book--mostly for boys or girls aged nine to twelve because there are a few tough words to understand if you are under nine. Although this book was written in 1992 and later turned into a Walt Disney movie, it's truly a fabulous book.

D2: MIGHTY DUCKS ARE BACK! is about a group of twenty teenagers who play ice hockey at the Junior Goodwill Games in Los Angeles. Coach Gordan Bombay is in a world of sponsors and business. Bombay only cares about Team USA's sponsor, hendrix, and trying to impress the board members of Hendrix.
I enjoy Julie "The Cat" Gaffney, the goalie from Bangor, Maine, because she's a great goalie and she has a nice personality. Jordan Horowitz, the author, wants you to get into hockey. I was surprised how much hockey is mental and not physical.

Los Angeles is a perfect setting for this book although California has a mild temperature. Downtown walls are covered with graffiti and skilled teenagers playing schoolyard hockey. Team USA decides to play these juveniles and actually learn from playing them. They learned how to play like Team USA.

I truly recommend this book although it hasn't won a single award. Jordan Horowitz' style of writing is adventurous but exciting.

Team USA is led by Adam Banks and Charlie Conway, longtime hockey stars. USA fans are shocked when Banks gets checked by Olaf Sanderson from the Vikings of Iceland. Banks tries and proves to Coach Bombay that he can play. He says to Coach Bombay that scouts are watching and he just has to play.

Jordan Horowitz was inspired by the 1980 Team USA Olympic win over Russia and so he wrote this book. This book is like most hockey books by Matt Christopher. I've read all of Matt Christopher's hockey books and D2: MIGHTY DUCKS ARE BACK! is much better. D2: MIGHTY DUCKS ARE BACK! is more suspenseful and exciting. I am comparing Christopher and Horowitz because they are both very good sports, although Christopher has written many more books.

Horowitz writes with an athletic edge, because he must know a lot about sports. H eknows what he's writing about. he knows kids will enjoy his books. That's what I love about him.
I was surpised how much hockey is mental and not physical. Even though I have not played much hockey myself. I learned this from the book and hopefully you will, too.

It's better then the book!
I bought this a few weeks ago from market place. The book wasn't in the best of condition but the book was great! Tons of non movie scenes. I recommend this book if you liked the movie.

Better than the movie!!!!
I loved this book!!! If you liked the movie, you'd love this book. There's parts that aren't even in the movie!!! It also throughly explains the "Things that make you go hmm..." in the movie.

A story to live, not just read!
In the story of his challenge of Denali, David Brill makes his experience come alive for the reader. This is not a tale that one just reads "ho-hum" and then puts back on the shelf, you LIVE it with him! Brill has the succinct author's talent to bring his life's experiences, and the telling of them, alive in all of his books. Also, this story will encourage anyone to take their personal dreams to fruition in their own lives. Whether you are an outdoor aficionado or not, this book is definitely a worthwhile read.

Brill Got It Right
I know Brill. We were on Denali together. He is a better writer than climber, but is no slouch in either area. Desire and Ice captures the essence of ordinary guys trying to stretch and do extraordinary things. For all those wannabes who dream of getting to the top of McKinley, Brill's well written and highly readable book gives hope and encouragement. Train hard, get your skills and techniques down, work as a team, and take care of yourself and your hiking buddies. That's important stuff and Brill devotes his early chapters to how he got ready for the Big Mountain. Yes, on Denali the challenges are many - crevases, sub-zero temperatures, tent-fever, biting winds and independent personalities. You have to deal with all of them. But your greatest challenge is alway found in your own mind ... and your attitude toward what each day brings. Brill captures it all. It was wonderful to stand on North America's highest point with David Brill. And, he is right on about our team. I too would be pleased and proud to climb with Kent and Gary and Joe all the rest of the those "ordinary guys" again. But next time, Clay gets to the top with us.

Great Reading for ALL...not Just an MoutaineeringTale
David Brill has written an excellent book about a journey of discovery. It's a great read, no matter what you're fitness level or interest in climbing or the outdoors. Brill's fluid style, at times witty and funny, transports the reader from the couch to the glaciers of Denali in engaging, believable terms. Brill's prose goes well beyond the typical gear and macho you might find in other books about climbing. You'll come away with insight, awe, and incredible satisfaction. Brill is a terrific writer. This book, in my opinion, is better than the best selling "Into Thin Air," about a fatal Everest climb a few years ago. Brill's "Desire and Ice" is much more approachable, because Denali, in climbing circles, is an "everyman's mountain." Difficult and deadly, yes, but more accessible. I am not a mountaineer, but still enjoyed this book thoroughly. I would never give a first, let alone second, thought to such a journey myself, but now, I don't have to, having lived through it with this great book. I'm going to look for other books by this guy. He's simply a great writer.

A truly "must have" cookbook for anyone who loves to cook!
I'm not Euell Gibbons or Emeril, but if you were to cross those two together, it's as close as you'd be likely to come to finding someone who might be able to write a book as wonderful as "The Wild Vegetarian Cookbook" by "Wildman" Steve Brill. Wild food aficionados in particular have good reason to rejoyce, now that Mr. Brill's new cookbook is available. During the past two months, I've made nearly 20 of his recipies, and my experience has been that each one is better than the next. Fortunately, all of them seem to be easily adapted to suit available ingredients or taste preferences. Most of the sections utilizing "featured" ingredients have an interesting background about the particular plant (or in some cases, mushroom) that adds the appreciation of the dish, and the entire book is organized intelligently, in order to make cross-referencing easy. Furthermore, I've seen nothing even remotely like this book on the market today, or at any time, for that matter. Between my wife and I, we must own close to 50 cookbooks, and this is far and away our favorite. We happen to be vegetarians, but we've given the book as a gift to non-vegetarian friends on several different occasions, (As well as having entertained company using recipes from the book) and the reviews have been very favorable, to say the least.

The Foraging Gourmet
"Happy Foraging"

WILDMAN STEVE BRILL
THE FORAGING GOURMET
author of
The Wild Vegetarian Cookbook:
A forager's Culinary Guide
(in the Field or in the Supermarket to Preparing and Savoring Wild (and Not So Wild) Natural Foods with more than 500 Recipes.
Published by The Harvard Common Press, Boston.
500 pages with five appendices:

The Wildman's mission is thus:

"The local environment has sources of foods that are delicious, healthful and organic, including herbs, greens, fruit, berries, nuts, seeds and even mushrooms."

Q. Who is Wildman?
A. Good-natured, with a sense of humor, Steve Brill has been guiding foraging tours in and around New York since 1982. He enjoys telling the story of how he was arrested and handcuffed by undercover park rangers for eating a dandelion in Central Park, a food resource area he highly supports. He's lectured in schools, for youth programs, museums, libraries and environmental groups for years. Brill is also a foraging and natural-cooking expert whose new cookbook teaches you to use nearly 150 of America's finest wild food plants to prepare tasty meals.

Brill does caution and wisely so:

"It is the reader's responsibility to identify and use the information in this book sensibly." He sums up the 29 pages of pre-foraging information with an admonishment to pay particular attention to correct identification of foods in the wild and recommends the additional use of his book, Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not so Wild) Places.

A TRIP THROUGH THE BOOK

The Wild Vegetarian Cookbook starts by introducing wild and purchased natural foods and basic methods for preparing them. He gets into seasonings, tips on adapting natural ingredients to traditional cooking methods and explains how to harvest wild foods safely.

Next he goes into recipes for "unwild foods." Tofu-based cheeses are basic to many of Brill's recipes, and he presents his recipes for Tofu Cream Cheese, Tofu Cottage Cheese, Tofu Sour Cream, and the like. While he employs a lot of in-book cross-references, he creates few, if any, unsolved mysteries.

The book is divided into seasonal sections featuring:

Winter and early spring: hearty wild greens and roots
Mid-to-Late Spring: best time to find wild vegetables
Summer with its plethora of fruits, flowers, greens and mushrooms.
Autumn: The further abundance of mushrooms, fruits also nuts.

His Table of Contents is a large, helpful, non-alphabetical, listing of recipe names grouped with the wild food it calls for, plus page numbers. His Index is an alphabetical index of types of foods and associated recipes. Here's an overview of just a few of his recipes:

Interesting and VERY approachable
I was a bit leery about buying a book on handling money, as I admit I don't handle money very well and I'm not very open to learning the details of money management. But I was really surprised - pleasantly - to find this book. Ms. Brill writes in a way that doesn't patronize the reader with trying to get too simple, but she does get her points across in a very approachable way.

I found Windfall to be extremely interesting and useful and have recommended it to friends and relatives. I've looked at a lot of other books on managing money (windfalls or otherwise) and this is by far the best written of the bunch. It ought to be required reading for any lottery winner or someone who receives an inheritance, and it's worthwhile for the rest of us too.

Interesting book - worth keeping as a reference
I wish I could say that I had a windfall sitting in my bank account, waiting for me to invest it, but I don't. I bought this book with the idea that it might help me if I ever came into a large sum of money, and also just to get a better idea as to how to handle money generally. I wasn't disappointed - Brill clearly knows her stuff, and she writes in a very "consumer-friendly" style. I found her advice to be straightforward and helpful and something that was reachable by someone like myself who does not have an MBA, or even a good understanding of investment options.

I'll definitely keep Windfall in my library and look back to it as a handy reference. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Good nuts-and-bolts guide
A few months ago I received an inheritance of several hundred thousand dollars. It was a confusing time, made all the more trying by the conflicting (and sometimes self-serving) advice I received from friends, relatives, and advisors about how to handle the money. Ms. Brill's book helped me by addressing not only the financial aspects of the inheritance, but the emotional conflicts that come into play as well. I highly recommend it.

Small profile yet gets right to the point!
This book was a real pleasure to own. The book is small enough to fit in my notebook computer bag and contains essential reference information, so that I could write some prototype code within an hour or two. My leather computer bag now has an imprint of this book, which I don't mind because of the confidence it gives me to know it is available.

The book covers all the essential information needed to install the J2SE, J2EE and TomCat environment in Windows. There was little more than references to installations for Solaris and Linux. Most folks with UNIX experence shouldn't have much problem setting up the environmental variables.

An annoyance with this book is that Chapter 4 attempts to cover topics with JavaMail, RMI, COBRA, JNDI with little content. The chapter appears to be an aborted attempt since it is only 3 pages long. These topics should just be placed in a glossary.

I am also really pleased with the publishers profile for this series of books. Most publishers of these books tend to go for quantity over concise reference material. This is a big relief compared to "Java for the Web with Servlets, JSP and EJB" which is 976 pages (a big 4 lb red brick).

Gets Right to the Point
I like this book very much because it gets right to the point. Sometimes when reading through massive programming books, I find myself wondering how relevant the current topic is. Is this really something that is widely used in the real world, or is this fluff? Every page of this book contains just the important stuff with no filler.

The section on EJB may have even been a bit too consise. Enterprise Java Beans is a very complicated topic that is difficult to give a short summary of. Even so, it's nice to have a well-written book that explains how the whole of J2EE hangs together. (I have another book about EJB).

I hope that smaller technical books become the trend. I'd much prefer a consise 250 pager over a 1000 page book that has no focus.

A Great Way To Understand J2EE
I've recently discovered the CodeNotes series, and have become a big fan. The admirable goal of these books are to give you a practical understanding of the subject in 200 pages or less. I've got 3 of these books, and find them all to be well-written, appropriately concise, yet filled with what's necessary to get you up to speed on the subject matter.

This particular CodeNotes covers well the big topic of J2EE, the underlying API's, JDBC, JSP, and does a great job with EJB's. The treatment of these subjects is complete from a high level, but you'll have a good foundation when you drill down in a given area.

I applaud these sorts of books making an inroad into the technical shelves. More often than not, I don't need a 1000 page technical epic that is a chore to both carry around and actually read. Also, because many of these books contain a CD that may or may not have any useful material, suddenly you've got a 15 pound reference monster ...!

This book is a real value for the price, it gives you the information you need. The extra material, such as expanded coverage of technical specifics and web links, is handled on the CodeNotes website, so no "CD Included" surcharge.

Nice coverage of the subject, from a happy reader not connected with CodeNotes at all. Just happy to promote the cause of succinct technical reference!

From a Concerned Teacher/Parent
"I have worked for 10 years with public school students who have Emotional Behavior Disorders (EBD), at the elementary, middle and high school levels. I wish I had read "Emotional Honesty & Self-Acceptance" when I was in graduate school as it is tremendously useful in working for EBD students. I am generally disappointed with affective materials available to use with these students, as exercises and activities are often superficial, and kids know it. The concept of emotional honesty is simple to understand and rings true. It is truly a helpful tool when communicated appropriately, which Ron Brill does quite effectively in his book. The information is here to use or not use according to the readiness of the individual facing emotional stumbling blocks. This book can also help support and maintain the emotional health of teachers as well. It has certainly been personally very helpful to me. Many of my students told me up front that they were desperate to find something that could actually make some difference in the misery they face every day. The anger and depression present in most students seems so overwhelming and crippling, no wonder teachers and counselors are also unprepared for the emotional distress that pervades our schools. Many families are also overwhelmed to the point they also need emotional health education adocated in this book. It is simply one of the most important books I have ever read. The author presents so much potentially threatening material in a non-threatening way that it is easy to accept. This is a simple but powerful repair tool for complex emotional/behavioral problems we all face today."

Excellent Resource for Teachers and Parents
In his book Emotional Honesty, Ron Brill contributes to our basic understanding of human emotions. This readable book will be of enormous value to classroom teachers, parents, and others who live or work with children/adolescents because the author carefully explains the distinctions between "healthy"--and the more common "unhealthy"--manner in which we deal with our own feelings as well as the feelings of others around us. In light of our nation's current inability and/or unwillingness to meet the emotional needs, issues, and problems of millions of our children, I believe that this book provides an excellent basis for individual and group study and reflection.

Emotional Honesty and Self-Acceptance
Ronald Brill's Emotional Honesty & Self Acceptance is an excellent resource for everyone, especially those working with children. The strategies in this book helped me turn "wounds into wings" with hurt high-risk teens in a community school. I have witnessed angry, self destructive, depressed and suicidal teens turn around and express their internally trapped hurt and sad feelings in a safe place, the classroom.

Help on the Pathway
As a devout Christian (Catholic) the book is convincing testimony about the necessity of God in one's life to provide balance and direction in the trials that beset each of us from time to time. While my own inner struggles were settled some time ago, my spiritual life was stagnant. MY SEARCH FOR THE INFINITE provided helpful insights that helped spark and re-kindle my spiritual flame.

The book is a bedside favorite and I often medidate on its words before switching off the lamp at night. JCT

Compelling and instructive
The author writes compellingly about coming to terms with negative destructive emotions, sharing how she overcame rejections by her mother... The book weaves through childhood to adulthood sharing the many travails that beset her. At age 88 she put pen to paper to provide instructions to other seeking the Truth. Scattered carefully throughout the book one finds glimpses of her personal association with Joel S Goldsmith. The author has also included dozens of her inspired and illumined poetry. This inclusion adds to what is already a gripping story of a Messianic Jew who triumphs above personal heartaches and set backs. A must for Goldsmith devotees and those interested in mysticism.

Written as though dictated by Scott M. Peck!
Highly recommend! RC Texas

Clear, concise at a profound level
This book continues to help so many of us on our own inner journeys - I, for one, will refer to the writings time and again for help, guidance and, more importantly, encouragement...The book is wonderfully illustrated with many of the author's beautiful poems - at the most appropriate point - love the many quotations which are so helpful. Best book in Photojournalism you will ever read.
I'm been reading this book for a Photo course. The Material on it is quite interesting and the writing is pretty clear. I have been studing photography for about 3 years now and by far this is one of the best books you could ever hold on your book shell. A++ to a great writter and author. Will recomend this book to other college students that are persuding to go into the a photo journalist aventure like myself.

Photojournalist's bible
Just as Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" is considered required reading for any writer, Kobre's "Photojournalism, The Professionals' Approach" is an essential instructional manual for the aspiring or advanced photojournalist.

As a working photographer for almost 20 years, I've owned previous editions of Kobre's book and always make it a point to keep one within reach. I recommend it to anyone interested in photojournalism, especially high school and college students. While filled with detailed photographic theory and principles, the format of the book is very easy to follow and introduces fundamentals and advanced techniques with equal ease.

Perhaps my most-read sections are the chapters on ethics and the responsibilities of the photographer to the community they serve. Society requires a photojournalist to be held accountable for their actions; to be honest and compassionate, yet unflinchingly accurate when reporting the news.

Although the price tag is a bit on the high side, the information Kobre shares is priceless.

best how-to-book on photojournalism hands down
the book is clear and practical. It goes beyond the normal basic photography skills and gets into the real grit of photojounalism.

Seeing the Light
Book arrived in great shape. Like new!!

most missed book
This is the best textbook I ever had, and I sold it for some ($$$) at the end of a semester to buy a bus ticket. Very mad; I miss the book, but it's so expensive. It's amazing the way the author incorporates all sorts of literary allusions in this physics book, such as offering an interesting hypothesis on the optical illusion of the egyptians getting swallowed by the red sea while chasing the jews. Every chapter, light becomes a metaphor for so many things, the way we see, the obstacles, etc.

Physics of light for everyone else
I first discovered this book when I asked a physics professor down the hall for an explanation of diffraction and refraction in relation to some daytime sky phenomenon. He handed me Seeing the Light, and before long I coveted the volume. The authors dress down optical physics into explanations that anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics can understand, relating optical phenomenon to everyday events and objects. The diagrams and photos help clarify the explanation. And practical, hands-on suggested activities help drive the point home. This book would be great for physics teachers -- or teachers at any level. How about pinhole cameras or illusion drawings for class projects?

Body Alignment for Women-Gets to the root of problems
The Core Program is a progressive series of stretches and exercizes designed specifically to strengthen key areas on a woman's body: neck, shoulders, abs, lower back, pelvis, hips, knees ankles and feet.

The goals of these exercises are:
1. Strength and Toning, Balance & Alignment
2. Injury Prevention
3. Making Sense of Discomfort (seperating injury pain vs. misalignment pain)
4. Helping Various Injuries (Carpal tunnel, arthritis, etc)

Now, this is not a quick fix weight-loss program. In, fact, weight training is recommended as a complement to the Core Program. So I would not recommend this for anyone looking to just tone up a few problem areas or to lose 10-15 lbs. by summer or is mainly concerned about physical appearance.

Though it can easily be used in conjunction with a program focusing on any of the above (and maybe even produce those results alone!) this is for someone interested in long-term health; someone interested in aligning their body correctly and becoming healthier, more balanced and moving more easily and with more grace as the human body is designed to do. There is a basic, intermediate and "ultimate" program designed to do just that. Anyone who has passing familiarity with any type of bodywork discipline (yoga, martial arts, pilates) will feel right at home and for novices, the exercises are well explained and the pictures help as well.

I highly recommend "The Egoscue Method" by Pete Egoscue for another take on body alignment and mechanics.

Finally an exercise program that delivers what it promises
When I first got this book, I had high hopes from all the reviews and from reading the first few chapters. The first time I did the workout, however, I was slightly disappointed and thought maybe this isn't for me. Then an amazing thing happened. The next day, after just one workout session, I actually felt a difference! Now I am a believer and recommend this book to everyone. The reason I was mildly disappointed the first time doing the exercises is that they are so easy, I felt like I wasn't "doing" anything. That is one of the great things about this program--it is very relaxing with a lot of gentle stretching and just a few strength building exercises--it is not rigorous, traditional exercise so there is no excuse not to do it as part of your daily routine. In fact, I think you will look forward to your Core exercise time. I will say that the first time I read through the exercise descriptions, it seemed a little overwhelming to be able to remember all of the steps and tips she gives you. But once you start doing the exercises you will realize how simple the movements are. By the second or third time you will be able to complete all the exercises with little more than a glance at the book to see what exercise is next.

Aside from the exercises, the author gives a lot of information about how the body functions, proper postures when sitting, sleeping and lifting objects, and lots of other really useful info. This book is a MUST have.

Finally, a program that delivers what it advertises!
I was very pleased with the content of this book. I've spent quite a bit of hard-earned money on fitness books and videos that boast of amazing results.

I've tried it all: weights, yoga, pilates, & various forms of cardio workouts, but haven't been able to stay consistant due to time constraints. As a busy women, I usually don't have time to spend on hour plus videos and books with long, complicated instructions. Before this book, I was racking my brain trying to incorporate yoga, pilates, and strength training. I just became stressed out instead.

The Core program mixes some yoga & pilates with strength work, so I experience well being in addition to toned muscles. I also walk regularly, go for a spin on my bike/inline skates, and do some extra yoga. I find this combination fits easily into my schedule; I don't have to stress about when to do it.

In short, I would suggest this book to anyone. Also, for those readers who find Peggy Brill's explanations complicated, I recommend taking a look at Pilates Body by Brooke Siler. Lots of people LOVE this book, but I found it very time consuming; I've owned it for two years and haven't used it much for this reason. Peggy Brill's Core Program is much easier to comprehend, & the participant can't become injured (I think that if someone wants to learn pilates, a certified instructor is the only way to go!)
