Where to turn for advice about love that works? Here!
Reading this book is like journeying to the most exciting "school of life" imaginable -- to learn painlessly, thoroughly, and once and for all, about making love work.

Understanding the five stages of love, as explained by Doctors Sherven and Sniechowski, will help you more in your daily life than anything you've ever read, seen or experienced. This time you're going to get what you need. It's thrilling. And it works.

I've read this book so many times, that my mind automatically goes back to it whenever I get to a troubled point in my marriage. But don't troubled times in a marriage vanish after reading this book? Uh uh. This book is about human beings, not ethereal spiritual creatures. The point is, though, that being troubled about inevitable differences between two people DOES vanish. And that frees you up to actually work on your differences and find a way to turn them into greater intimacy.

Be Loved for Who You Really Are is so different from anything else I've read. It's lively as hell and anything but pedantic. The authors are people first, doctors second. They put themselves into the book. That means, right from the outset, you aren't alone. They're right there with you -- sympathizing, empathizing, encouraging, supporting -- and most important -- guiding and informing.

I love the underlying theme of this book; you can't fail at love. That isn't hype. The book lets you see how, if you put yourself out there in a real and clear way, you might not always get the results you want, but you won't fail. You won't let yourself down.

Read this book if greater intimacy is one of your most important goals. This is a brilliant, simple and wondrous roadmap to how to give yourself the greatest gift of all -- being loved for who you are.

Fresh Perspective on Differences
This book is a refreshing alternative if you are worn out from trying to change, mold, or manipulate yourself or someone else into being what you want in order to fit your romantic picture. The four part model takes the reader through the stages to help learn to embrace rather than resist differences between people in intimate relationships. Jim and Judith, a married couple, use examples from their own marriage as well as cases from their practice to teach us how to discuss and appreciate differences. A couple who really walks their talk emphasizes getting back to the basics of fun and love so your partnership can grow and flourish.

Never fail at Love?!
This is not your run of the mill "how to" book on love, but a book that guides you through the spiritual journey of how to love and to be loved. The authors share personal anectodes, and stories of other couples, which helps brings the book to a real personal level. They send the message that, if you honor your self and others, you can never really fail at love...what a beautiful thing!

Get ready to start taking orders!
I am working on 2 Swartz patterns: the basket-weave cardigan in this book and the Inner Child mittens from "Hip to Knit." As mentioned in other reviews, this book has patterns in every skill range and allows you to perfect a technique in a short time. The gauges are varied to allow for every gauge preference to find a suitable pattern. You cannot imagine how cute your dog will look in the finished sweater - my mom's miniature schnauzer gets nothing but praise for her high cuteness factor in her sweater (the one that is pictured on a schnauzer and I knit it out of Dover in silver/blue). Her patterns are clear and uncluttered and these projects (and book size) travel very well. I have a request for the garter stitch sweater for a friend and am excited to start it. You will not regret investing in this book!

Even a beginner can use this book.
I only knew garter stitch when I bought this book. In fact, I'd never read a knitting pattern, but I do sew, embroider and quilt. I'm what they call an "adventurous beginner", and this book is written in such a way that I understand most of the instructions. If there's something I don't get (like twisted rib), I search the Web and I'm off. My little pug Marley now has the most glorious basketweave cardigan known to man, and my other pug has an Icelandic sweater in the works.
My advice for beginners: read the patterns through carefully, and make the _exact_ sweater in the book before you start adding width, etc. The sweaters work up pretty quickly. If the resulting test sweater doesn't fit your dog, donate it to a rescue.

Dogs In Knits by Judith L. Swartz
I must say, out of all the books I am currently reviewing that this is MY personal favorite. I love Dog In Knits! And for all you Cat People out there, this is a great book for you too. The sweaters are sized for pets from small to large. In fact, I know a few freshly shorn sheep that might like one of these stylish sweaters, too.
Almost as much as I enjoyed reading each of the patterns, I also found myself looking forward to each of the model's introductions and the pages of additional information which included favorite dog names, facts, recipes for treats, interesting information about a few organizations for pets, and natural pest treatments.
Swartz includes sweater measurements for dogs weighing up to 75 pounds, but I found the patterns easy to adjust. They are easily knit or crocheted using your own pet's measurments, then just adjusting the patterns up or down as needed. These patterns start at Small, which is listed as being for a dog under 10 pounds. I easily adjusted that measurement to fit a smaller dog just by reducing the calculations one step further and following the pattern she had already set for the larger size. Charts and line diagrams are easy to read, colorful, and concise.
Although the yarn brand used in each sweater is noted, yarns are listed by type and size along with needle and gauge measurements. Yardage requirements are listed for each of the sizes along with its finished measurements, as well.
Another great feature of these patterns and this book is that they are all easy to knit or crochet for needleworkers of all skill levels. The range of styles includes colorwork, an Aran pattern, and even a pretty lacy party dress which is my personal favorite. Each style uses a different technique and it is explained carefully in easy to understand directions. Swartz also includes patterns for pillows, blankets and Christmas stockings.
The easy to read glossary includes abbreviations, directions for intarsia and stranding, knit, crochet & embroidery stitch dictionaries, and also finishing ideas which even include how to sew a zipper in knits.
Note: These sweaters also would be attractive used on your "stationary pet", ie: stuffed favorite like a teddy bear or bunny.
You will want to take this book home with you, not to mention all the models in the book, too.
Buy it today and start making stylish knits for your favorite pet!

BEST RECIPES OF THE GREAT FOOD COMPANIES
This book has the type of recipes that you find on the back of the products on their packaging or in women's magazines. It has recipes that I wish I'd cut out from those places but never did. It also has the history of how many of our household products came into being. It's a cool book!

A handsome volume from a classic magazine
Dominique Browning, editor of HOUSE & GARDEN magazine, has a triumph on her hands with "House & Garden Book of Style." HOUSE & GARDEN has long been the sophisticated cousin to the more accessible HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, and that chicness is in evidence here. The HOUSE & GARDEN cool austerity--sometimes sacrificing warmth for hard-edged style, but many times not--is amply displayed throughout.

The book covers a panoply of styles, from "Country Luxe" to "New International" to "Mid-Century Modern" and beyond. The shabby warmth of English-inspired rooms is covered, as is the prissier French look--but as HOUSE & GARDEN so often does, there is almost always a visual wrench thrown into the works to get your attention and make you rethink your assumptions about a particular genre. Perfectly making the point is the photograph on p. 25, which shows an 18th-century settee decorously covered in a taupe damask, above which hangs what appears to be a piece of Spirograph art made with screamingly bright primary oil paints. The effect is jarring--but it works.

The thinking which goes into the decoration of these rooms is explored just as deeply as the looks themselves. Although photographs take up most of the room--as they should, since this is a case when a picture telling a thousand words is not only desirable, but necessary for instructing the reader--the text is informative and enlightening. The end result is that these profoundly individual rooms make their own cases, and what beautiful cases they make.

Wonderful break down of political philosophy
I have had the privilege to have Dr. Judith Best as a professor and this book helped me a LOT in political theory class. Dr. Best uses "our" (student) language to explain the complex philisophies of those like Aristotle and Marx, among others. Wonderful way to get the student INTERESTED in the material. But then again, that is Dr. Best's style!!!

A Classic!
I was first introduced to this story via the movie when I was in grade school...I loved it the first time I watched it and it became tradition in the school I attended to view it every year. I lost track of the story once I hit high school because it was no longer shown on TV and so it was by pure accident that I found the book in a used book shop. I purchased it on a whim to see if the book held as much magic as the movie did from my childhood and I was more than pleased. There is no other way to describe this book but as a complete joy. Hidden in the guise of a children's book is a well-written, hilarious, and touching story showing the true meaning of Christmas and how even the "worst kids in the history of the world" can understand the spirit of the season if given a chance. This book should be added to the yearly ritual of reading Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' and Clement C. Moore's 'Night Before Christmas' because children as well as adults will enjoy the story. I'm also happy to say that I was able to find a copy of the movie on here, too, so I can add it to my annual viewing of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.'

The best children's book I've ever read!
I didn't read this book until I was 32 years old and it made my day! I laughed so hard that I thought that I was going to hurt something. I loved the Herdmans because I grew up with a lot of kids like them. I now know why this is a classic that will continue on long after I'm gone. Ms. Robinson did a fantastic job of incorperating humor in many, many poignant moments. I laughed reading every page until the last two or three when the tears came. You couldn't help but be deeply touched by how, for a few brief moment, the Herdmans cleaned up their act to tell the wonderful story of Christmas in their own special way. I had the opportunity to spend a day with Ms. Robinson last year and let me tell you all, it was the experience of a lifetime. She's a fantastic lady who is absolutely incredible with children.

The Best Christmas Pagent Ever!
This book tells a wonderful story of how 6 kids on child well-fair become the new meaning of christmas. By finally understanding the REAL meaning of Christmas by living it. They may not be the most liked kids on the block, but they sure do give you a laugh. It all starts when Grace's son Charlie says they get lots of dessert at sunday school, and then all the Heardmans start coming to Sunday School. Because they are so tough, not one person but the Heardmans have the leads. The oldest Heardman, Imajean, plays Mary, and the rest take all the other parts. Everyone in the neighbourhood shows up to see what happens. If you want to find out what happens, read the book or rent the movie!
All in all this book is a wonderful book, and i have nothing but good things to say about it.

With Pam Anderson, you get it "Right"
Excellent Book. Each recipe explains what elements were tested (e.g., cooking temperature, cooking time, ingredient mix, what seasonings how much and when, correct cooking methods). I consider myself, at the least, an experienced cook, even if I can not claim to be an excellent one. Pam's research easily improved my technique on several classic favorites.
Sorry ...no glossy photos...don't be put off by that...it is wonderful, concise, and easy reading.
Ok Let's get serious: Chicken Soup, Clam Chowder, Beef Soup, Stir Fry, Macaroni and Cheese,Pizza, Chicken, Fried Chicken, Chicken Pot Pie, Hamburger*, Meat Loaf*, Beef Stew**, Special Dinners: Roast Turkey, Cornish Hen, Prime Rib, Pork Roast, Lobster. Side Dishes: Cole Slaw, Greens, Corn-on-the-cob, Potato Salad, Mashed Potatoes. Breads: Bread, Corn Bread, Muffins, Pancakes. Desserts: Various Cobblers, Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Pie, Lemon Meringue, Cream Pie, Cheese Cake (various textures), Brownies, Rolled Cookies. That's It. She has done her homework and you will be a better cook for having bought the book. I have not read "Cook's Illustrated" so I can't comment.
Brian
P.S. For 5 stars, you got to have those glossy photos. Am I right?

Recommened Highly
I have only made a few of the recipes in this book. All have been outstanding. The brownies are the best I have ever had, period. Her recipe, The Perfect Prime Rib, is just that. Anyone looking for a cookbook with lots of recipes may want to look elsewhere, however The Perfect Recipe has recipes that we all know and love.

Great Cookbook and Friendly tone
I subscribe to CI and have one of their books as well. Yes, the recipes are the same in many cases, but what makes Anderson's book a bit better is the friendly tone. The chicken stock was wonderful and who would have known that a simple hamburger could taste so good? I also love the stir fry section with the many selections of sauces and have tried the oyster sauce and was very impressed with the results. Tonight I am trying the butterflied chicken with lemon, rosemary and garlic, and am quiet sure it will be delish as well. I wish she had a show on FoodTV!!

A primer & a guide
Books are wonderful bridges for communication about feelings, values, & decisions. Books can save lives by allowing Readers a way to use their minds in a safe, broadening & nurturing way. Literacy doesn't simply mean being able to scribble signatures, read shopping lists & understand highway signs, it means being able to read fluently, engaging the mind in an adventure of self-discovery. Packed into our brains, from conception on, is a universe of experiences, learning to read gives that universe language.

SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE BOOKS is a super guide on how to set your children on their road to a lifelong passion. Take the bibliography to your library & recruit the librarians in your hunt for good books.

Everything you want to know about what the ability to read can do for your children's minds, when it can do it & how you can help train & encourage a lifelong love of reading.

Just remember to add Reading Time to your schedule & the mix.

Useful
I bought this book mainly for the annotations of the books and, for me, the theory and application to classroom situations is a bonus. The part I will use the most is the annotation section, where the book is discussed and pointers are given on what types of issues are addressed. Discussion points, always useful for teachers, are carefully addressed for each book. I wish more books could have been included, but, of course, there are trade-offs in that - longer ==> more expensive.

must have
This book is very different from others like The Read-Aloud Handbook by Trelease. It focused on the needs of gifted children, not only for the voracious readers but also for gifted kids that don't read. This is the only bood I read that addressed the issue of gifted non-readers.

Don't be discouraged by the very disappointed review. It was for the early version. Now, books recommended, at least the onces I tried, are available through Amazon.
