All battles are won or lost between your two ears
This a great book that delves into the psyche of every trader and makes them figure out their underlying reasons for why they trade.

Mr.Bernstein makes a trader put himself under a microscope and forces him to interact with markets in a way that fits his personality.

Mr.Bernstein also shows traders how to change their personalities to match the markets they are trading, whether it's stocks or Commodities.

a must read
this book is not another psychology book on the stock market. It is the TEXTBOOK to use for yourself - it will be very painfull to hear his ideas but then again a must if you want to succeed.
I think there is a little fluff and double talk, but overall his ideas are sound and rest upon firm logic. I think that he gives you much to think about and do about your trading - and most improtant show you a list of what the successful do that makes them successful

Psychology of trading in a detailed and practical form
Believe it or not, I had despised the book much just because of its title. I had thought of it as just one of the many thousands of other whatever Q books the cheap marketers try to sell. I had bought just because it's so "affordable" relatively speaking. The fact is: I had been absolutely wrong. Mr. Berstein, a psychologist, really put something solid behind his propositions and recommendations. We read in many books why tips kill. Mr. Berstein really went into the very depth of our minds to explore why we kept on doing stupid things. As a pseudo intellect (ha ha), I bought his concept and that's the very beginning of my new professional trader life (avoiding any form of tipsters and tips). For those who are suffering from obsession compulsive disorder on "tips", this is the book for you and it might help you a lot to stop your tips induced losing streak!

Good for a new trader, useless for a veteran...
I purchased this book because, as a vetern trader, I know that occasionally Jake Bernstein has some insightful new ideas about methods for trading futures. However, I found this book somewhat disappointing. While a new trader may find much of the book interesting and useful, a veteran trader will find little of much value. Most of the book is concerned with order placement, basic trader psychology, etc. If you need a general primer for the futures markets, this book may do you some good. If, however, you are a veteran and well-versed in the mechanics of trading, avoid this one.

Highly Recommended!
Author Jake Bernstein puts an exclamation point in his title but fills his pages with abundant cautions, caveats and confessions. This is a voice deepened by an endearing hubris, a Dutch uncle lecturing his aspiring nephews on the dangers of speculation in futures, knowing the dumb ones should be appropriately daunted and the smart ones will hear his wily insinuations that this can actually be a very good thing, if they get it. If you are a successful securities investor thinking about speculating, this will make you keep your eggs in several baskets, even though the author shares hundreds of tips. If you wonder about the significance of puts and calls, hedges and options, this is a useful, precise and unambiguous lesson. Futures trading is not an investment; it is high risk speculation. Each trading strategy requires substantial time and money, and even the best fail half the time. We from getAbstract recommend this book to investors who need a Dutch uncle to quell their urge to risk their kids' college funds - first, listen to good old Uncle Jake.

Profit in the Futures Markets
This comprehensive and well written work is one of the best new
contributions to trading for years. You can actually learn real,
objective and valuable lessons (from this book), which is quite
a rare find. Destined to become one of the basic tools in every
trader and market student's library. Not just another re-write
of someone else's earlier work, like most books on commodities.

Disappointed! Too simple, sometimes naive
This is the second Jake book I had read up till now. The first one is "Investment Quotient" which I gave my highest rating. That does not lead to my negative comment on this one because of over expectation. It's just that the content and quality of this so named guide just cannot be described as compleat.

In one single book of only 200 pages, Jake tried to discuss many important elements of day trading, including history, mechanism, player characteristics, market structure and even sophisticated technical tools like Stochastics, MACD, Momentum, various forms of Moving Average and even AI. The problem is: he tried to cover so many things that the whole book becomes very shallow and far from what is needed for this highly risky game.

I dont understand why many reviewers gave this book such high ratings. I am afraid that many amateurs had already been lured to enter the game under the false illusion that they became better, if not well equipped, after reading this book, and had already fallen prey to the market crocs.

So simple, so good...
Jake has writed no news about trading world, but all that the traders need is into this book. Sometimes we read a bit of trading system, a bit of psicological approach, etc. Jake said that the book is dedicated to day traders and aspiring day traders the world over. Doing day trading is arduous: the challenge immense. The promise of victory and lure of wealth inspire you daily to confront the odds of success. Jake give us this book in the hope that his efforts, research, suggestions, systems, and methods will help us achieve our goals.
Great buy!

Clear as a Bell
This is an excellent work. As one who is considering a career change to day trading and has read many books on the subject, I can attest to the fact that this book, unlike most of the others, is a cogent, scientific study of short-term trading. Mr. Bernstein illustrates precise trading systems, with entry, exit and stop-loss indicators, and sets forth the results of his backtesting, all in a clear and very readable style. I highly recommend it.

Complete Futures Guide
This book is all you need to become a futures trader. It provides you with a realist picture of what to expect, 9 great trading systems (which I have used to great success), and forsight into where trading will be heading.

I reacommend this book to the novice or professional as both will be able to gain something from 'Strategies for the Electronic Futures Trader'.

for wannabe day traders
I found this book extremely helpful in making the transition from position trading to day trading. The book's focus is expressed in the title. Day Trading. Light on theory, anecdotal diversions, and the popular interview approach, this book is heavy on practical, simple, robust and effective strategies that work. Simple straight-forward rules for each strategy are included, which eliminates the guesswork of implementation. And as a trained clinical psychologist with over 30 years trading experience, Mr. Bernstein is uniquely qualified to address the all important aspect of trader psychology. A must read, in the genre of Joe Ross, for the serious student & intermediate trader. A relevant, succinct yet comprehensive book on day trading. For the beginning day trader, buy & read this book first. Doing so will save time & money.

Bernstein, I tell you, is a genius.
I refute any negative claims about the content of this book. The strategies outlined in the book are viable and very profitable approaches. I know, I have adapted a couple of them to my own use. I am in the minority as a profitable futures day trader because as every trader knows, most traders lose. I also lost money in my first year trading futures. There is a steep learning curve in trading. Here is my message to any newcomers to futures trading. NEVER GIVE UP! This book is a wonderful place to begin your own futures research. For day trading, I have found the very unique support and resistance methods found in the book effective in the S+P 500, Nasdaq 100, and Euro. Get some charts. Apply the methods, oscillators and indicators for yourself. You will see how effective they are. Then begin your own research using Jake's ideas as a springboard. Yes, you can make a living trading futures. There is a whole lot of very expensive bull out there about futures trading. If you do not want to take my word for it, consider this. Larry Williams recommends reading all of Jake Bernstein's work. So do I.

Why Traders Lose, How Traders Win: Timing Futures Trades With Daily Market Sentiment

An introduction to the DSI (Daily Sentiment Index)
Jake Bernstein explains how mob psychology effects the markets. He has a proprietary measure of the trading public's "bullishness" or "bearishness" toward each of the most popular futures markets. It has been well established that the trading public is the most likely to be wrong group of traders and the author gives you his plan on how to move from the group that is wrong as much as %90 of the time to the group which is actually earning a profit. Sentiment and human emotion are VERY important to success in the markets and should not be ignored. The two reasons I did not rate this book more highly are: 1) the entries and exits are not very precisely outlined, 2) this index is for shorter term traders and the DSI is sold by the author as a subscription and is fairly expensive - but worth it in my opinion.

More In-Depth Knowledge from a Valuable Teacher
I first read The Compleat Day Trader, which held my hand and taught me the basic knowledge I needed to become a day trader. With specific facts, instructions, methods and explanations, Jake Bernstein walks you through everything you ever wanted to know to begin day trading but were afraid to admit you didn't have a clue. From basic definitions and explanations to precise methods, examples and charts, he instructs you in a succinct yet elucidating manner about the ins and outs of day trading. The section on psychology alone is worth the price of the entire book. And if you take the time to commit his twenty keys to success as a day trader to memory, it's truly the icing on the cake of knowledge. Once I completed it, I couldn't wait to read The Compleat Day Trader II which advanced the teachings even further than The Compleat Day Trader and went on to show you what systems work and don't work and why. The section on placing orders was really valuable too. To me, what makes Jake's books so meaningful is how he combines the psychology of trading with the trader's basic nature and intertwines that with the hard, cold facts of reality. This makes his writings and teachings much more real and down to earth than those I have read from other authors and traders. And he is also very accessible, which is almost unheard today. That's why I feel both books have earned five stars.

Only you can make it work
Having read many books on Day Trading and attended courses and seminars, this book added "confidence". It gives you simple systems to work with, 30MBO, InsideDays, Gaps, etc.. It also tells you what the indicators lack and what most traders lack to succeed, discipline. Use the 30MBO but don't change the method. Stick to it. Be disciplined. Aimed at the futures and commodities traders, these methods also work with fast high volume, high votility stocks. I emailed Jake with a question on the 30MBO and got a reply in hours, that's value. I have ordered his next book, "The Complete Guide to Day Trading Stock". Can't wait. I cannot see how anyone (who is not a beginner) would not benefit from this book.

Solid Info
Bernstein has put together two great books on day trading that cover all aspects of the day trader from psychology to order placement to systems and to indicators. They cover all important aspects of the high risk venture. These books are among a number of good titles that will add to the readers knowledge of the topic. While Bernstein has his detractors, as do all well known figures in the markets, he give value for the money and solid information that makes good sense. His chapters on managing risk, order entry, and trader discipline were especially helpful. No, he doesn't offer us the Holy Grail as does Larry Williams in his recent direct mail blitz - no Bernstein doesn't offer guaranteed profits as do som of the promoters of day trading methods but he does offer tools to help us learn the business of day trading. I'd have liked to see more trading methods and different approaches but what he did show has been helpful. The numerous cautions and precautions helped me remain aware of the risk. He has a down to earth writing style that's clear and easy to follow. Bernstein has many books titles to his name, some good, some great, but this one is well worth reading and studying.

So simple, sometimes naive
With respect to this book, I do agree that

1) momentum is a very important trading concept whilst MACD is a very useful oscillator type indicator to identify overbought and oversold situations, and thus change of s/t trend, a TA tool which helps traders not to buy high sell low, especially in a day trading environment.
2)the author had written a very easy reading book in a very friendly and understandable way.

However, I can hardly agree that:-

1) the author presented momentum as a surefire weapon in the highly volatile market and can be used alone
2) the author did keep it simple, but it's too simple all the way throughout the 180+ page content and he should lead the readers from simple concept to complicated application or even teach readers how to improve its accuracy with simultaneous usage of stochastics or RSI or...In fact, there are many examples/charts illustrated by the author which showed extended period of divergence with very unfavorable price moment that might have already kicked an investor out of his position, in case he/she did not have a strong brief on his/her position but by sheer reliance on MACD.

As a professional trader, I cant recommend this book to anybody. The quality of this is just so far below the author's own classic "Investment Quotient" which the author's strength (trading behavioral psychology) rests solidly upon.

Very usefull and easy to read
This book offers a simple but robust method of trading on stockmarkets. The presence of many many (sometimes too many) charts makes it possible to read on the beach, not just behind the computer.
The Momentum Stock Selection method is good. Bernstein claims that you can use the method on intraday basis. This is true, but not in the same simple way as he shows in the book, it takes a lot more interpretation and experiments (on paper first is my advice!!).
His rules on do's and don'ts in trading are absolutely valuable and true, and funny to read of you have done all the don'ts already in the past.

a good read
this is a good book and well written. however, nothing new is learnt as i have read martin pring's 'trading with oscillators'. another book by this author, J. Bernstein, 'IQ the investors quotient', is a much better and strongly recommended read.

The Complete Day Trader: Trading Systems, Strategies, Timing Indicators and Analytical Methods
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Authors: Jake Bernstein and Jacob Bernstein
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

For hardcore day traders, and straight to the point
Most books for "day traders" are so general that their techniques and advice can be successfully used by swing-traders (those who keep stocks for several days), and even by longer-term investors. This one is different. The author, Jake Bernstein, strongly advocates real day trading, when no securities ever kept overnight. Therefore, his techniques are usable for very short term trading only.

The advantage of this book is that it has very little general rhetoric and comes straight to the point, that is to the techniques which the author finds profitable. Basically, 90% of the book is about the use of technical indicators (such as various moving averages and oscillators) to determine potentially profitable entry and exit points. The topics discussed in particular detailed manner are the use of moving averages, stochastic indicator, moving average channel (MAC), relative strength index (RSI), momentum, and techniques for trading of opening gaps. The author also suggests several oscillators of his own. However, despite the simplicity of these indicators, one has to own software such as Omega Research Trade Station to calculate and plot these home-made oscillators in real time, or write a program yourself. There are also several chapters applicable to futures only (actually, the whole book is about trading in the futures market, but 95% of techniques are equally applicable to stocks).

The great advantage of the book is that it is very specific, clearly illustrated, and gives plenty of detailed technical advice and a number of potentially profitable trading techniques. Be advised, however, that those who are interested in trading but do not have enough capital to take profits from half-a-tick changes (and I, too, belong to this group) cannot really take advantage of this book. No trend and no trade longer than a few hours is discussed there! Therefore, this book is for the serious day traders, and only for them. If you are a day trader, this book is a must; if you are not, do not bother buying it but rather consider other options, e.g., the excellent book "How to get started in electronic day trading" by D.S.Nassar which is good for traders on any time frame.

Very informative & and packed with helpful information
One of the most difficult things involving the markets, regardless of what you trade is timing. With this book, Jake not only gives you suggestions for timing indicators, but he also gives you some strategies to follow and shows real time examples which are clear and very detailed. In this book, Jake share his extensive knowledge about systems, strategies, technical indicators, and trading systems. I have purchased many trading books and this one is CRITICAL for your success as a trader. One more point that I wish for potential traders to consider is the source. Jake Bernstein has been involved in commodities and futures trading for 25 years. He brings real trading experience to the table. He does not promise you guaranteed results are a "pot of gold" under the rainbow. What he does give you is the information that you will need to be successful, REGARDLESS of the time frame you are trading. Also, he is available for you. I recently e-mailed him with a question from the book and I received a detailed explanation from him the very next day! I challenge you to find any author who will do that! Good luck and good trading!

An excellent compendium of concepts and ideas.
In "The Compleat Day Trader" Jake Bernstein has successfully presented the reader with the full gamete of information necessary for success in any day trading endeavor. The experienced or beginner trader will each benefit from the comprehensive coverage which takes the reader on a detailed journey from what to consider when starting out, through a thorough presentation of technical analysis to building a personal strategy. This book is filled with easy to understand examples as well as the author's own interpretation, commentary and recommendations based on his extensive trading and research experience. The psychology of day trading which is often not adequately covered in other books is presented along with numerous tips and basic rules for success in a manner that binds the psychological aspects with actual trading system methodology. This book will help provide the edge that is necessary in the increasingly volatile and competitive markets of today. This powerful book should not be absent from any day traders collection.
