Very good book
As a new-yorker I would recomment to use this book as a travel guide. I'm not sure about hotels info in this book but attractions coverage is great!

A handy guide book
I have an earlier edition of this book and use it extensively when we travel. On it's own, it's packed with interesting information and trivia. I use it together with AAA guidebooks and find they complement each other nicely. I'm looking forward to getting the latest edition since we found on this last trip up to the redwoods that a few of the restaurants recommended have since changed hands.

Away for the Weekend: Southeast
Anyone living in the Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) will find this travel book to be a practical and useful tool. The author, Eleanor Berman, pairs seasonal activities and local attractions with various locales. For me, this opened my eyes to the many enjoyable short trips my family and I can take without going too far from home. The book contains telephone numbers, driving directions and suggestions for accommodations and restaurants that I likely would never have discovered on my own. My family and I have stayed in several of the book's recommended bed and breakfasts and have been delighted. I keep this book handy to refer to for travel ideas. I reccommend it highly as a thorough and "user friendly" guide to travel in the Southeast.

Don't go to NYC without this guide.
As a New York City aficionado, who visits the city about four times a year, I find this book to be the best I've read. Visually, this guide is amazing. The glossy, clear and beautiful photos throughout the book, make it even more worthy of buying and the maps (including one for the subway) are also easy to understand.

The book is divided up into sections based on each area of town and then there is a chapter titled "Travelers' Needs," which includes places to stay, all types of restaurants, shopping and much more. The "Survival Guide" is also extremely helpful with its practical information. You'll also find history about New York all throughout the guide, which I find very interesting.

Another really nice thing about this book is that it is friendly to foreign visitors, explaining things like how to use a pay phone and the U.S. currency.

If you are planning on going to NYC, this "Eyewitness Travel Guide" is an absolute must have! Everything you want or need to know about this fabulous and one-of-a-kind city is right in this book.

A decent introduction to New York
I found the Eyewitness Guide to be unexpectedly detailed in listing the various sights of the city, though not nearly as much as a more textual guide, e.g., the Fodor's. I'm sure, however, the photography is an element which helps tourists orient themselves quite a bit more easily than the more cumbersome (but more informative) Fodor's. That said, quite a bit of history and explanation is woven into the Eyewitness as well, and it makes up for its relative conciseness with enticing design. The guide is a book which would actually make one want to visit New York, and one which makes navigation within it quite simplified. Furthermore, it seems more portable. Combining quite a bit of information with the visual beauty of a National Geographic guide made this a success.

The guide does seem to be tailored quite a bit toward non-American tourists, with descriptions of how payphones work and of American cuisine. Still, a bit of laughably obvious information to Americans is made up for with such features as two page spreads for relatively unvisited museums and attractions, with isometric diagrams and "must-see" exhibits.

Four Weeks in New York
I am planning to spend four weeks in New York in your summer, my winter. Wanting to buy a good travel guide I went to the largest book shop in Melbourne (AU). With a choice of around 100 books - this book stood out. Concentrating more on what to do and see then the usual 'where can I stay for under $50 a night'or want a plethora of restaurant this book took me into the galleries, museums and architecture delights of New York. I feel it is designed for the traveller who wants to jump in boots and all. Thanks to this book I know my four weeks will be filled with exploring this fascinating city. Best book to get.

A Great Guide Book Even for a Local
I live outside of New York City and rarely visit the city. But after Sept 11th I wanted a guide that I could use to explore the places I've never been to (as well as ones I have been to). The DK Guides are great for the amount of information they provide and this guide is no exception. There is information in this book that even a native New Yorker may not know. The book talks about the history and architecture of buildings that you may otherwise walk by. There are museums that I've never heard of. There are street by street maps of some of Manhattan's great neighborhoods. I have used the book to plan a walking trip from Penn Station to Rockefeller Center and back via Time Square. I am planning many future walking trips with this book. If the book is two heavy to carry, buy two. One for permanent reference and the other to "rip out" the pages of the places you are planning to visit. This guide book is well worth the money.

Better for just Boston
This book was fine for touring around Boston. It was very informative. As far as the rest of New England, there must be something better. We found ourselves in the middle of some great towns with nothing more than a couple of sentences, if that, about the area. After getting out of the car and exploring, we found many interesting sites and attractions. If we made our decisions based completely on the book we would have passed up many interesting stops. Next time we travel in New England, we will buy a different book.

Another great trip, thanks to the DK guide...
Once you buy your first DK Guide, you will seek them out anytime you are getting ready for a trip. My husband and I had not traveled to Massachusetts or Rhode Island previously and used the guide for much of our trip. We found it extremely helpful for the Boston Area-for the sites to see and the handy map of the "T", which is their subway system. I also recommend purchasing the compact fold-out DK street maps of Boston, that can be purchased separately at most book stores. We used the guide throughout our stay in Plymouth, our day trips to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Rhode Island. As always, I love the full color pictures and descriptions of the sites. We felt that we were able to make informed decisions about the places to visit that would interest us the most. Also helpful is the Survival Section in the back that gives you much of the information that you need to know when traveling to a new area. We used the guide also for restaurant recommendations, while out driving, and were not disappointed with any of the stops we made. I plan to use the guide the next time we go back and would highly recommend it to those thinking about a trip to this beautiful area of the country.

A Beautifully Crafted Book
I live in New England and this is one of my favorite books on this region of the country. DK has always published quality books in their Eyewitness Travel Guides. They seem to have done an even better job with the crafting of this book. The colorful layout of this book with maps, illustrations, photographs and text really captures the spirit of New England past and present. This is a very dear and heartening book because it genuinely captures a sense of the people and the land. I think it is also very informative, not only from a historical perspective, but as a point of reference for sightseeing, travel and enjoyment.

More for group travel than solo
I was quite disappointed in this book. I wanted a book on actually traveling solo, experiencing new places and situations from a solitary point of view. Most of this book is in fact about being a single person in a group travel situation, with lots of information about tours, resorts, cruises, and such. If that's what you're looking for, I can see that this book might be helpful. The little bit of actual information for solo travelers is basic common sense that is in all such books -- stay in safe neighborhoods, don't keep your money all in one place, don't stand around looking like an idiot.

Every woman must read it!
As a newly divorced avid traveler, this book gave me the courage to continue my travels sans partner. I took the author's advice on African tour operators (OTC)and had a wonderful experience. Guess what? I met several other single travelers at our Botswana lodge and never felt alone. Now I'm planning a tour to China.

wonderful for planning that quick getaway
Incredibly handy for those times when you decide on Saturday that you want to do "something different" this weekend, but have not a clue what are your options. Divided into activities appropriate for each season, the book suggests a wide range of trips around the area, from historic exploring to art appreciation to communing with nature. I had an old version of this book that I lent out and lost, and I loved it so much I'm buying another copy!
