Excellent EM primer
I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field. Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs. This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.

If you are learning EM you must have this book...
This is a great book for those entering the field of EM study. It takes you step by step through both SEM and TEM sample prep and analysis. It is packed with helpful pictures and diagrams. It will be a book you will refer to for methodology and protocal from fixation to sectioning...I really love this book.

An excellent, exhaustive, tome on infectious disease. The authors provide detailed information in small, manageable bits. The down sides are the cost and the size.

An Absolute Steal!
This is a fantastic historical atlas. I have a collection of dozens of historical atlases and the quality is not always high. Too often topical historical "atlases" have too few actual maps -- most of which are just reprinted from earlier historical atlases.

"The Penguin Atlas of British & Irish History" is the exact opposite. There's an original full-color map on every page. The atlas covers the whole length of British history from the Ice Age to the Chunnel. The maps are very well made and detailed, alternating between overviews of the whole of the British Isles and close-ups of particular cities, regions, and topics. One particularly nice touch is original panoramic reconstructions of historic sites including: Roman-era London, Viking-era York, Medieval Norwich, Tudor-era London, 18th-century Dublin and Edinburgh, 19th-century Manchester, and contemporary London...

Good, but dry.....
I agree with most of what the other reviewers are saying, but I found it a bit dry, and somewhat frightening if anyone reading it was just diagnosed with HIV; flipping through it can fill you with "doom and gloom".....

Comprehensive. Everything you might & might not want to know
As someone only recently becoming interested in HIV this book covered alot of ground, including the medical course of the disease, the emotional effects on those with the infection and those caring for people with it and legal matters. Designed more as a manual, where certain chapters can be skipped if not relative to a persons needs, it's structure still led easily from one section to the next. Accounts from people living with the virus and their cargivers add a human touch which can be associated with by almost anyone. A very good book for anyone coming in blind to the subject. Interesting, thought provoking and intellegent...

Excellent and thorough
An excellent guide which explains how HIV is transmitted, evaluates available treatment and prevention, provides counsel on coping with the emotional effects of the infection, and addresses financial and legal concerns. New to this revised and updated edition are detailed discussions of new drugs, special considerations for women, and recent data on CF4 cell counts and viral load.

John C. Calhoun: A Biography
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (February, 1994)
Author: Irving H. Bartlett
Amazon base price: $25.00
Used price: $15.76
Average review score:

Good, but distant biography
After reading this biography of John Calhoun, I had completed reading about the lives of the "Great Triumvirate" of Webster, Clay and Calhoun who, as Representatives, Senators and Secretaries of State were the most dominant non-Presidents in early-19th Century America.

Each of the Triumvirate had their assets and their flaws. As this biography illustrates, Calhoun's great assets were his integrity and his intellect; his great flaws included his inflexibility and his adherence to promoting and continuing slavery.

As a biography goes, this one is good but not great. It is a generally well-written work, but Bartlett has a tendency to speculate as to what Calhoun and others were thinking at particular moments and let a pro-Calhoun bias sometimes remove the objectivity from his work. Despite this, I still did not feel I could really relate to Calhoun, who comes off kind of remote.

Overall, there is more good than bad in this book, however, and as an introduction to an important historical figure, this is a worthwhile read.

A Superb Biography on a Great American
John Calhoun is probably one of the most interesting Americans to ever serve his country. A member of the American troika that included Clay and Webster, Calhoun was a staunch states right and slavery advocate. This book begins by examining Calhoun's youth and how his father Patrick instilled his virtues in his son. Calhoun went to Yale and later law school in Connecticut. Calhoun was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives at the time of the 1812 disagreements with Britain. Calhoun was to remain in politics until his death almost 40 years later. Calhoun served as a Representative, Vice-president, Senator, and Secretary of War and State. The book is at its best when it details Calhoun attacking the status quo, something he did often. In fact, with todays sell-outs that we call politicians, it's nice to see that someone once stood up for what he believed in. Bartlett spends some time pointing out Calhoun's ironies--one of which was that as great a man as he was, his kids were spoiled brats. Only one of his children was up to his immense intellect, and that was his daughter Anna. Since women didn't have careers in the 19th century, she couldn't follow him into politics. Try and find this book at the library if Amazon doesn't get it in stock.

The Future Is Ours: A Handbook for Student Activists in the 21st Century

Another guy making a buck at the expense of activism.
Another how-to resource manual where the author makes a profit by just assembling a bunch of essays by fellow self-promoting young activists. Too much on environmental activism, ignoring two grim realities: how the heck youth activism can ever defeat the DC money game, and how too often youth activists from the upper classes alienate working class activists with their condescenscion. Some nice tips for organizing a rally, but, aside from that, there's a lot of pomp (osity) with little circumstance

This book has everything you don't know you don't know
The book is great. I've been involved in a lot of community service activism projects, in the South and the Northeast. I started getting involved in high school and currently I am a doctoral student who is still learning and making a difference. If you've done similar stuff, you know we all learn a lot and improve with experience -- and when we get started, we all have A LOT to learn. Even after all I've done, I found The Future Is Ours really helpful. The amount of detail that the book goes into, and the worksheets, help you keep organized when you're in the middle of everything -- it's all the stuff I didn't realize I didn't know yet, down on paper and ready to use. The chapters I've read and used have made me a lot better at organizing and working with people. It's something you should read when you're getting started and keep on the shelf for the other times you'll need to thumb through for ideas. I wish I'd had it back in high school.

The one book you MUST own if you want TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Praise for THE FUTURE IS OURS:

"A wonderfully and sensibly useful book, full of information for all those hungry, thirsty idealists who search for help in figuring out how to move from thought to action."-Robert Coles

"In THE FUTURE IS OURS, John Bartlett has created a guidebook essential to any young activist planning to make ripples in the world. Whether she is volunteering for the first time with a human rights group, starting her own recycling initiative, founding an AIDS awareness campaign or running for public office in her home town, the committed idealist will need this book in her back pocket. Combining practical information with the voices of successful young activists in the field, Bartlett provides both advice and concrete examples of what works. Hunter Schofield's road map to navigating local government, for example, or NARAL/NY program director Stephanie Creaturo's suggestions on starting after-school pregnancy prevention programs in uncooperative school districts give readers a vivid impression of life in the trenches. Armored with these accounts and Bartlett's extensive step-by-step guide to getting started, young people who want to make a difference will enter the next century equipped to transform their communities."-Chloe Breyer, co-founder, Who Cares?

"THE FUTURE IS OURS is inspirational, empowering, and eminently practical. Our generation faces some big problems, but tools like this book are tremendous allies for anyone who wants to work for positive change. Thank you, John Bartlett. You have inspired me more than you will ever know."-Ocean Robbins, 22-year-old founder of Youth for Environmental Sanity, co-author of CHOICES FOR OUR FUTURE

Adult Development and Aging

The 4th edition is a good revision of a good Adulthood text.
Here we have a text that was already very good. This edition is a thorough review of major contemporary approaches to adult development. As an instructor I tend to favor a contextual lifespan approach and I found the treatment of contextual lifespan psychology to be more than adequate.

The chapter organization is good and the review questions at the end of each chapter are very useful in the course. My students are college juniors and seniors, and they find it easy to read.

I tend to avoid texts that don't do an adequate job of presenting research. This text has a sound introduction to current research in the field, and is an excellent choice for me.

Instructors looking for a good presentation of work on cognition in Adulthood will find the associated chapters useful as both a text and reference material to keep on hand for other courses, such as a 'Lifespan Psychology' course.

The new edition includes more on women, cross-cultural aging, personality and clinical aspects of aging, grandparenting, as well as much new material on aging and adaptation.

I would certainly recommend this book for any solid college level course on Adulthood.
