Great Resource
For my senior seminar, I wrote a paper on desegregation/busing in the South. While I was doing research, a librarian found this book for me. I had to wait 2 weeks to get it through interlibrary loan, but it was worth it!! The essays really bring home the complexity of Southern desegregation when viewed through the lens of class issues. I can only aspire to produce such insightful scholarship!

TKE-- THE UNTOLD STORIES
WHAT A CHARMING PIECE ON THE ANTEBELLUM SOUTH. CRAFTED WITH PURE GENIOUS AND A PEN FOR DETAIL, "THE MODERATES' DILEMMA" BRINGS TO LIGHT THE UNDENIABLE OBSTINANCE OF THE SOUTH'S PREMIERE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.THIS WORK IS A MUST READ FOR HISTORY GRADS OF ANY BACKGROUND.

A book whose magnitude is monumental.
Matthew Lassiter, editor-in-chief of this seminal collection, sets forth, once again, a fresh standard of scholarly excellence and eloquence. His essay, "A 'Fighting Moderate,'" illustrates one of his innumerable intellectual virtues, the ability to electrify his arduously acquired historian's sobriety with an innate psychological acuity.

This is a book that has been in my mind since the first time I read it over 30 years ago. I have been trying to find a copy of for my own. I read it for the first time in grammer school. I have always felt sorry for the little girl in it. It always made me feel bad that all she felt she had in the world of any value was that plate. And I loved how proud she was of it.

A Must Have For Blue Willow Collectors

An important handbook for midlife women
Prime Time provides an Afro-American women's sourcebook to midlife health and wellness, providing particular information for black women ranging from understanding the health care system to defusing anger and managing stress. From assessing the risk for diabetes to understanding the common signs of depression, Prime Time is an important handbook for midlife women.

Absolutely Awesome!
Though I am not quite yet within the demographic age group this treasure was targeted at I have been blessed with a better understanding of what will be necessary to sustain a better spiritual, physical and generally healthy lifestyle. I especially appreciated the writing style of the authors. The personal testimonies made the book very personal and relatable. I found the authors candid, knowledgeable and thorough in their research. This book is great for general reading and understanding (I like curling up with it on the sofa). It's also a must for every woman's personal reference library.

Classic
This is a powerful, thorough and scientifically-based book for African American Women. Its focus is on wellness, disease prevention, and specific treatments for many of the ailments from which many African American women suffer. The book is well organized with clear and detailed disucssions of complex topics written in plain English.

There are many things which set this book apart. First it is targeted to African American women and distinguishes illnesses and treatments that are applicable specifically to them. Yet, other women can derive tremendous benefit from the detailed information.

Second, the authors present real life examples and true stories drawn from their own lives, and from the lives of the many women with whom they talked and discussed health experiences, challenges, concerns and triumphs.

Third, the authors include unique assessments which readers can take to help them focus on and address their health and wellness issues and concerns. This feature, in my mind, sets a new standard for books of this type.

Fourth, the authors' handling of the topic is broad and deep and includes good coverage of both the physical and emotional wellbeing and other aspects of total wellness.

Fifth, the book is filled with important graphics including photographs which clearly depict the message of this book: African American women can and do take personal responsibility for their own health and wellness.

This book is for the lay person or clinician, the healthy or the ill; It is for women at their prime - whether before, at or beyond midlife.

Men can also benefit personally from this complete and comprehensive guide to midlife health and wellness. I did.

The definitive book on the silent film
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) is one of the most famous silent films ever made, and this book follows the making of the film from beginning to end. Riley starts with the story of the Paris Opera house, Gaston LeRoux, and the novel. Then he follows the complicated production, with problems over Lon Chaney's participation, many rewrites, previews, and re-edited versions. When sound films came along, it was re-cut and opera sequences were added. This book has reprinted the entire pressbook, the original script, plus sections of the different script versions. Riley interviewed heroine Mary Philbin and several of the technical crew-members for this book. If you are a fan of Lon Chaney Sr., you will want this book.

The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Movie!
I have always been a fan of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, and have considered the 1925 movie version the best of all versions. I was highly intriqued and mystified when I heard that the movie actually had been filmed more than once, with the first version filmed forgotten. Then there was this book. Well I must say, Philip Riley has done an EXCELLENT job compiling every bit of information as to all the different versions of this film, and makes it truly an interesting read. With terrific background on Leroux's novel too, this book has instantly become one of my favorites of all time!

A ¿must have¿ for serious seabird enthusiasts.
A fascinating account of the biology of the world's auks (or alcids). Full of valuable nuggets of information, much coming from years of field research by the authors. The text is rich in useful maps, line drawings and tables of facts and figures. The color plates by Ian Lewington are up to his usual very high standard and show all living species in the majority of plumage states. I found the discussion of the evolution and radiation of both extant and extinct species particularly interesting. The high price and limited treatment of field identification may put off many birdwatchers, however those who read the book will be surprised at how interesting the auks really are.

Collector's Encyclopedia of R.S. Prussia: Fourth Series

excellent book for all audiences
This is an excellent book! I teach an antique porcelain class and found it useful to gain expertise quickly. This book is successfully used by appraisers, dealers, collectors and teachers. I have read many porcelain books, and this one was one of the easiest to read and understand. It was well organized and contained a good variety of the styles and characteristics of RS Prussia.

All four volumes are needed to identify pieces, although Ms. Gaston provides a shape guide to help date pieces not pictured.

What I'd like to see in the next book is 1) clarification on how the marks were made, i.e., printed over or under glaze, 2) the types of glazes used (and were pieces refired) 3)repeat of history with changes incorporated, verses the new and updated info section. The history only appears fully in the ist volume.

What a Great Reference!
Okay- I admit it. I did not have a room full of R.S.Prussia china to reference when I bought this book. I just loved the pictures and had to have it! I can dream a little dream and imagine finding a portrait bowl or vase at a small town flea market for next to nothing...and then I can look up its worth and smile as I place my prize in the china cabinet ( a coveted possession NOT for resale!).

A reviewer from Ohio
Wonderful book with full color pictures. Also pictures of the marks. Great price guide! Will use this over & over.

To Know a Fly
An absolute classic little book that uses humor and cartoons to illustrate the joys of science and the scientific method. Perfect for students from junior high through university. I only wish it was still in print so I could assign it for the students in my animal behavior lab course.

An Introduction to the Thrills of Science
I read this book when I was in college, many years ago, unfortunately-- after-- I had struggled through the science curriculum.

At the time, I thought how wonderful this book would be for a fifth or sixth grader whose opinion of the study of science has not yet been formed.

In this book, the author takes the reader on a journey through the curiosity of the human spirit, to wonder-- the human desire to discover how things work-- to know the value of asking questions--, along with the tedium, the failures, the successes and the rewards of finding answers to those questions. Such is the nature of scientific research.

That it was written with humor, on the study of flies, it was plain to see that the study or pursuit of science, is in fact FUN!

An Introduction to the World of Flies
This book is too cute for words, and it's very informative. Read it now!

incredibly brilliant book
When I read I dogear pages with especially interesting quotes on them, & in this book I dogeared almost every page...& on each page I can't tell now what quote I was dogearing for, because everything he says is so amazing. This book is so beautiful with its ingenius motion through psychology, architecture, poetry, & on & on. Of all the books in my personal library, this is one of the very most highly recommended from me to any reader. I am sure that no one was mistaken in hailing Bachelard as one of the 20th century's greatest philosophers.

Fascinating Exploration of Spaces, Psychological and Real
This is a must-read for ANYONE interested in the arts, architecture, home buying, renovation, interior designing. Along with his in-depth exploration of how spaces work within our minds, he leads to beautiful poetic passages that will leave you breathless no matter how well read you are. After reading this book you will no longer think of the world around you as a vacuum to be rushed through. Everywhere has meaning.

A beautiful lyrical explorative journey
How do we associate emotional relationship to intimate spaces? This is the basic premise of this book. Gaston Bachelard unleashes our imaginations as he helps us to explore these feelings with an journey through our house - a sacred place that holds dear to most of us, a place that we grew up, a place that is full of memories both from our childhood and our present existence.

From the cellar to the attic, Bachelard also shows that these fantasies are not only common to all of us, but also can be viewed in a greater context and reflected in literary works, poetries, philosophies, etc. Also, these kinds of primal response also can be reflected in our relationship with natural spatial objects like nests and shells. It also deals with the metaphysical question of outside and inside.

This is a book that is full of philosophical treasures and wonders!
