THE version of "Anne" you want to read before visiting PEI
While packing away all of my Anne of Green Gables books for a trip to Prince Edward Island, I could not find my paperback copies of the first novel. Since I was not about to take my original 6th edition hardcover copy I went to the library to pick up "Anne of Green Gables," and I stumbled upon the Annotated Anne. I lucked out big time. This volume footnotes almost every literary reference and allusion (there are a few that have stilled escaped detection), along with all the people and places. Appendixes present songs mentioned in the book, along with the music, as well as stories and poems, the geography of the story, and lots of other fascinating details. These books is ideal for not only those who want an additional level of understanding to this beloved classic as they reread it (again), but is extremely useful if you happen to be coming out to PEI to visit the "actual" locations. This book will tell you where to find the real Lovers Lane, Lake of Shinning Waters, and other places from the novel as well as places important in the life of L. M. Montgomery. I realize that if you are looking this book over there is a very good chance you already have a copy of "Anne of Green Gables." But you are going to want to have this one as well. I bought my own copy at the Cavendish site, where, as I learned from this book, is where Montgomery wrote the first two Anne books. This is a special edition of a very special story.

This book is so complete! It is truly wonderful
This book is a must for all "Anne" fans. Includes a LM Montgomery biography, timeline, pictures from the original and other vintage "Anne" books, as well as references and explanations to the text itself. This even includes lyrics to the songs that are mentioned in the story, as well as the poetry Anne loves. Highly reccommended.

Everything Anne
This is one of the most outstanding annotated editions of a book I have ever seen. It is packed with interesting, relevant annotations about the world of Anne of Green Gables, as well as LM Montgomery's own life and Prince Edward Island itself.

Due to the nature of the writing in Anne of Green Gables, an annotated edition is especially welcome to fill in the blanks on Canadian politics (What is a "grit?") and social conventions at the time. Reading the annotations increases the pleasure of entering the Anne's world, and that is incredibly important.

Also, of special note and appreciation, many of Anne's favorite obscure poems and readers are included in the back. Finally, you are able to get the whole version of the many quotes that she drops, and see just where she picked up her big words.

The best gift you could get for a true fan of Anne of Green Gables.

A Million and One Uses
Packed with 600 pages of games, riddles, mazes, activities, and physical challenges, the Giant Book of Puzzles & Games is a great reference tool for not only families, but anyone who works with children. This book solves the dilema of how to keep children occupied, regardless of their age or gender. Perfect for rainy days, long car trips, vacations, camping trips, birthday parties, sleep-overs, scout meetings, family nights, or quiet time alone, the activities will challenge parents and children alike. Educators should also take note, since teachers, as well as "before and after school" project coordinators will find this book a relative gold mine of ideas to supplement classroom curriculums and activity schedules.

With titles that range from "Quiet Time" to "Test Yourself" and "Special Party Games", the 11 chapters allow for quick and easy reference. Subcategories within each chapter further help readers locate special areas of interest.

Interestingly, I found myself flipping through the book to read the jokes and riddles, as well as work the challenges, whenever I had a few minutes of time. Frequently, a "few minutes" turned into a few hours. Information on the book's back cover states that "There are enough puzzles to keep you entertained for years." This the truth, and like all good books, you won't put it down.

Awesome book when you don't want to read alot
I'm 15 and had to critique a book having to do with the Middle Ages. While other people chose The Prince and bigger books I sorta cheated and got this 30 page book with pictures. It had lots of informative facts and little cartoon drawings that helped me better understand the info. It took me 20 minutes to read so it was really easy but I actually learned alot.

OOOOOOOO! Spooky
Yes, I typed in another review for "World's Weirdest 'True' Ghost Stories". What happened was, I got these two books in a pack. They also came with a spooky casette, but I've long since lost that. Anyways, it's close to Halloween, and I dug these two books out from the closet. In this book, I would deffinetly read, "The Black Dog of Hanging Hills". It gets you're mind working!

Excellent Handbook
This book is an excellent resource for researching the life and works of Beethoven. The sections regarding compositions are broken down by ensemble and type, and provide important information such as performance dates, key signatures, time signatures, and movement headings. Almost all topics, including such things as Beethoven's handwriting, favorite literature, philosophies, thoughts on other composers, are covered. Very handy for reference, as well as a guide to starting Beethoven research. Well worth it at twice the price!

Unparalleled Structure
Undoubtedly thousands of books have been written about Beethoven, but what sets this one apart from the others is its well-organized and exhaustive structure. Perhaps the best way to highlight this for the prospective buyer is to list the actual sections contained in this book. 1. Calendar of Beethoven's life, works and related events 2. Beethoven's family tree 3. Who's who of Beethoven's contemporaries 4. Historical background 5. Musical background 6. Beethoven as an individual 7. Beethoven's beliefs and opinions. Following section 7 are several more sections dedicated solely to his music. As you can see, this book offers several aspects that many others neglect to include. This structure also affords one the opportunity to go directly to an area of interest without having to wade through myriad pages. Also included are eight pages of paintings, sculptures and sketches of the maestro. This book is equally at home in the bathroom, on the coffee table, or in the study. It is an invaluable source of information for anyone desiring to learn more about this amazing genius.

Fascinating and Wonderfully Complete!
This book offers chapter after chapter of information on every aspect of Beethoven. I find that every time I pick this book up, I can find something interesting to read about. Obviously the music as catalogued and described. Beyond that, details of the great composer's personality, writing style, health difficulties, as well as his known views on a variety of topics provide endless hours of fascinating reading. I am impressed by the thoroughness of this book. Listings of people who Beethoven knew or interacted with, his influences and those he influenced, pictures and descriptions of his handwriting and manuscripts, the historical perspective on the times he lived in, all clearly described. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about this great master, and to anyone who is interested in the life and times of one of the most influential artists to ever live. In summary I have found it accurate and complete and always interesting. It is an indispensable reference.

The world's best party games
Published in Unknown Binding by Sterling Pub. Co. ()

What a Value!
I have all the Party Game Books and believe it or not,Ifound this one to be the best!... There are games for kids as well asadults and lots that can be adapted to both. In the back of the book there is a list of all the games along with an age grid which has stars that tell you what age the game would be appropriate for. There is nothing too outrageous and nothing off color but, again, the games are pretty adaptable! There are games that would be great at a backyard carnival and instructions for some of the classics. Its just a generally nice game book to have for reference if you are into games. My 7 year old had a blast at a New Years Eve party that I gave for him and 5 other 7 year olds. Most of my ideas came from this book. END

Snowbird: The Story of Anne Murray
Published in Paperback by Quarry Press (June, 1996)
Author: Barry Grills
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $5.95
Average review score:

Boring...
This book was a disappointment. In the beginning of the book, the author himself admitted that Murray's management would not cooperate in the writing of a biography. Thus he was left with reading various books and articles to do his research. Much of the book quoted a biography written by David Livingstone in 1981. It was like reading Livingstone's book twice! I have been an Anne Murray fan for 20 years and reading this biography left me knowing only as much as I did before. This publication is also full of misspelled words and misprints! An individual that doesn't know much about Murray may benefit from this book but die-hard fans need not bother.

Yawn! (It's a very *nice* book.)
Before you buy, make note of page 11. "The management at Balmur Ltd., Anne Murray's company, as management so frequently does, when someone proposes a biography of their talent, informed me that 'Ms. Murray will not co-operate with any biographer at this stage of her career.'"

Barry Grills does his best. The book is half description of Springhill, Nova Scotia (Anne Murray's hometown), and half lengthy quotes from back issues of magazines and newspapers. As he says himself, ..."Anne Murray has always been an enigma."

If you've just discovered her talent, this is a good outline of her public life, up until the mid 90s. If you're already a fan, more than ever you'll want to go to Springhill, to see the Anne Murray Centre for yourself.

As for Anne Murray--she's still an enigma.

A Book you must see for yourself.
It depends on how you see this book for yourself. If you know everything about Anne, then this book isn't for you since it goes through the stuff all over again in detail. But if you don't know much about the Canadian Singer Anne Murray than this is a good book for you to have on your shelf. It talks about her private life, public life, on the stage, in the office, and in the studios. It gives you a detailed description of a woman the world fell in love with and continued loving for more than thirty years.

Weak book on solitaire
I collect books on solitaire. I would not recommend this
to anyone but a collector -- there are much better books
in print, such as Morehead and Mott-Smith's "The Complete
Book of Solitaire and Patience Games" or Parlett's
"Teach Yourself Card Games for One". Barry claims to
have selected the best games in her book, but it is still
littered with junk like Auld Lang Syne (a virtually
unwinnable game with no skill). The descriptions are
often incomplete and occasionally wrong (her description
of Pyramid, allowing cards to be used a second time after
being discarded, is nonsensical). She describes Storehouse
as a minor variant of Canfield; it's actually a forerunner
where cards are packed in suit. She rates games by
amount of space used (an interesting feature) and level
(it's not clear if this is supposed to be win rate, in
which case many of the ratings are wrong, or something
else). Myron Miller's illustrations are nice, but the
book has little else to recommend it, either in selection
of games, or clarity and accuracy.

Interesting collection
This book has a nice assortment of games, but despite the illustrations and descriptions, many games are left unplayable unless you are comfortable improvising your own rules. I have to use a secondary source to gain a clearer understanding of the play and objectives.

Solid Collection of One Person Games
This book makes no attempt to be comprehensive in its listing of solitaire games, but the games it does describe are described in large print, with diagrams, and examples for the games that are not so obvious. This was useful to me as some of the more comprehensive books (and web-sites) keep the directions minimal. Certainly a good buy at this price.
