A remarkable tool.
This extraordinary work enabled me to work through my great stress and associated feelings after my Father was diagnosed with stomach cancer which resulted in his death. I am grateful to the authors for creating such a powerful, accessible, and healing book. The instruction is clear, concise, and most importantly, easy to follow. Guidance is offered when challenging feelings arise. One never feels left in the lurch. And I don't believe you must be an artist, at all, to use this book, though you might be prompted to continue working with the simple and easily aquired materials the authors suggest. I can't say enough about the usefulness of this book for dealing with emotional trauma.

Seashore Chronicles: Three Centuries of the Virginia Barrier Islands

An excellent reference of the Virginia Barrier Islands
Those who live on the beach are subject to some of the more momentous forces of nature.... storms and hurricanes. In few other places has this been the case more than along the Virginia coast....and this work explores all those who lived in this treacherous margin between the mainland and the ocean. The book covers the continuing shifting of the islands through time, as well as their attempts of being habitable. The most celebrated ponies on the seaboard get their due...as well as some famous people who owned land or visited the area. It also serves as a valuable lesson to those who may wish to live in the apparent peace and solitude of the shore....for it can change at a moment's notice. It is one of the most balanced local histories I've ever read...and is told from the perspective of those on the islands, a very nice touch. Those interested in the Mid-Atlantic should run and buy this book while it's still in print.

Supervision Today
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall College Div (June, 1997)
Authors: F. Barry Barnes and Stephens P. Robbins
Amazon base price: $33.60
Used price: $26.95
Average review score:

A must read for any supervisor or mid level manager
This is by far and away the best book on supervision that I have ever read. I have used this book extensively to train first line supervisors and mid level managers in Eastern Europe to develop their management skills. The book effectively condenses the management courses I took during a 2 year MBA program into a well-organized manual. The book is easy to read, to the point, and replete with examples. It captures the essential concepts on the margins of each page and provides a review at the end of the chapter. Moreover, it offers case studies and self-assessment tests to reinforce concepts.

This book is an excellent resource for private study, professional programs and universities. My only regret is that this text or its companion, "Management Today" were not utilized in any of my undergraduate or graduate management courses.

T.S. Kuhn and Social Science
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (March, 1982)
Author: Barry Barnes
Amazon base price: $53.50
Average review score:

Kuhn was asking for it!
Kuhn's description of learning a paradigm in his 'Postscript -1969' (Structure of Scientific Revolutions 2nd edition 1970) was seized upon by Barnes as the best example of the social nature of scientific knowledge. How Kuhn could have written Structure without realising the social interpretation Barnes was to apply is difficult to understand when one re-reads Structure.
