NEVER HAS A WOLF PACK BEEN SO CLOSELY STUDIED WHILE STILL LIVING A NATURAL LIFE. THIS PARTICULAR BOOK IS NOTHING SHORT OF AWESOME! THE PICTURES ARE AMAZING, AS IS THE ENTIRE BOOK! A TRUE INSPIRATION! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL, THAT MANY MORE WILL UNDERSTAND THE TRUE LIFE OF THE WOLF.

The Sawtooth Wolves
This book is awesome!! I have sponsored the pack for nine years now and never get tired of looking at the book. The photography is exceptional and for anyone who loves these majestic wolves they have to buy the book!!

Big Wow! Awoooooooooooo!!!
This is about the most interesting book I have ever read! I started reading and I couldn't put it down! The pack of wolves takes you to daring moments when the pack mobs Lakota or quiet times when two wolves rest together. They are not the horrid creatures imagined in stories, but beautiful creatures that this book explains.

Richard Ballantine: Cycling's Friendly Fanatic
I've been a cyclist for about twenty five years and in that time I've managed to accumulate a library of books on cycling. Books on everything from custom frames to offroad riding technique. But by far the most enjoyable to read has been this and several others by Mr.Ballantine. Many of the newer cycling books have a compulsive, competitive tone to them, as if the authors assumed the reader was bent on entering the Tour de France. In contrast, Dick Ballantine infuses the reader with his sense of joy and enthusiasm about the pure act of riding and the pure form of the diamond frame bicycle, a design that has accomodated over a hundred years worth of cyclists. But he also manages to cover practical matters--everything from hub overhauls to recumbents. The first chapter is entitled
Get A Bike! Since I first started reading Mr.Ballantine, I've "gotten" five and partly due to him, I've loved them all.

Best character/diversity/art bicycle book...
This book should have never been let go out of print. R's 'Ultimate' book does not replace it. This book has much writing of great character and insight. It covers the whole rainbow of cycling with proper respect and depth, with particular nods to velomobiles, trikes, recumbents and folders. This edition also has the finest assortment of B&W bike sketch art ever published, with superb highlights by the incomparable PAT.

Aptly named...
If there is only one book about cycling you should own - then this is it!

Everyone who owns a bike should get this, especially if you're just starting out. It is really what got me started off, now I own my ultimate dream machine and I still refer to it now and then. You see so many riders out there with incorrectly set up bikes. The three things I can notice from about 100 feet away are: their seat is too low; their chain is insufficiently lubricated; and the derailleurs are not adjusted properly. This book will teach you how to set up your bike correctly, and provide you with essential knowledge on cycling.

This has all the info in it for beginners and intermediates alike. The main sections are: mountain bikes, racing bikes and touring bikes, future bikes and cycle maintenance. Within these pages, you'll find info about bike set-up/positioning, sizing of frames, clothing, riding techniques, racing and stretching. Plus more info on other specific bike parts, such as: frame construction, types of wheels, gears/brakes, etc. Also specific info about various types of bikes used in: observed trials, the tour de France, criterium races, time¨Ctrials, triathlons, track racing (& classic bikes).

The maintenance section is quite extensive, and will generally be adequate for most people's needs. It covers tools (and there's a lot!), wheel truing, fixing flat tires, adjustments for comfort, brakes, chains, pedals, derailleur adjustment, and cleaning/lubrication.

There are plenty of good colour photos, it is well written and very informative - what more could you ask for? If you haven't actually flicked through this book and you're still having doubts about getting it, go to your local bookshop and just have a look through it, you'll see what I mean. All in all a very comprehensive guide to cycling - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for youngsters and/or beginners.

Best photo/character book of the bicycle
This book has the best most diverse photos of bicycles of any ever. Also some fine writing and insights. The only big photo spread I've ever seen on road-side emergency repairs. Bravo! Also plenty of coverage of bicycle alternatives, which diversity is what bikes are all about in the first place. Bravo again! This book should be kept in print, in libraries nationwide. Richard's Best Book, 2nd ed, should also have never been let go (it has the best bike ART in any book).

Brief, but informative
I really liked how this book tried to tell the tragic story of the German surface fleet in WWII. As I said, it's short, but you can learn almost everything you need to know about the legendary German warships by reading this book.

Doctors should buy this book too!
Doctors don't always know medication either. While vacationing in Annapolis a doctor over medicated me and I slept for hours. I hope he buys this book!

Do doctors really know their medications?
I think both patients and doctors should buy this book. I was once over medicated by a doctor while vacationing in Annapolis and slept for hours! I sure hope he buys this book!

puzzled about editor
why is the editor of this book listed as Andrew j. Buda in the search and Brenda Adderly in the link?

Essential Information for Greater Biking Enjoyment!
Reading this book made me want to go out and buy new bikes for the whole family!

There's nothing quite like the pleasure of riding out of a beautiful bike showroom on a great bicycle! Yet within months, I always noticed that the feel was gone. Pretty soon, I wasn't riding as much.

Now from reading this book, I know that all bikes need regular maintenance to keep that top-performance feeling. And I know what to do. It's a wonder that my bikes and my children's bikes ran at all before reading this book!

My idea of bike repair was to patch a puncture, adjust the seat and handle bars, and get a new chain if it broke. That's about 3 percent of what you really need to know.

The book is also useful as a guide to what type of bike to buy in the first place. The pros and cons of various types of materials and structures are well developed.

For those who enjoy mastering physical tasks, this book also offers much potential pleasure. "Keeping your bike in tip-top shape is very satisfying -- and makes riding more enjoyable."

Although I am far from being a mechanical person, I could clearly do everything in the book. But I do need different tools. No problem! The book shows you just what to buy, with many choices (more kinds of bike stands than you ever knew existed, as an example). Not only that, it tells you which ones to take with you on a long touring ride. If you don't have the right tool, it shows you how to improvise with materials usually found along the side of any road. This was fascinating! In fact, the paperback is just the right size to take along on a ride, so you can figure out what to do if you bend a rim.

One of the real insights for me was to realize that all of the bearings are meant to be rebuilt once a year. And there are a lot of bearings on any bike.

Where a bike might have different types of equipment (such as for brakes and transmissions), you get descriptions of what to do with all the major types.

Many pictures show you what each part looks like, and the steps to go through for maintenance. This is the main drawback of such a compact book. Some of the images can be a little small. But I see no way around that if you are to have a truly portable guide to repair and maintenance.

Most people will decide to still get some maintenance and repair at the local bike shop. But this book can show you what's involved so you can figure out what it might cost in time and money to do the work yourself.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the Troubleshooting Chart to give you an idea from the symptom you have observed what is a likely cause, the solution, and where the information is found to implement that solution.

I suggest that you both get this book and try doing some of the maintenance. If you enjoy this, it could become a very satisfying hobby. You could also do maintenance for other people to help cover the cost of the tools. I suspect that less than 1 bike in 50 is properly maintained.

If you have children who like to learn to fix and maintain things, this could be a fun family activity. My dad was very good at such things when I was a wee lad, so good that I never learned how to fix anything. Be sure to pass along what you know and learn instead.

But whatever you do, be sure you get out and enjoy biking with loved ones! That's the ultimate payoff.

Wonderful help
I have been able to take apart and repair all of the children's bikes. I has saved us a bundle as we have eight. At $40 a bike plus parts I have repaired and rebuild for the time and cost of parts and my children have learned to do for them selves as well. It's a great book to have.

Bike Repair Thank you Thank you!!
Short and sweet! I'm a rookie to off road riding, and this book gave me a great understanding of whats happening between my legs! I can now fix a flat w/out help! YEA!!! Hey for $...bucks this book is the one to get.

Not that interesting
This is kind of a history of the bicycle. It was not all that useful or valuable a text. I am mainly interested in road bike riding. If you are interested in a historical review of bicycles then you might find part of it of interest.

Best general Bicycle book I've ever read..
Just finished reading this book and I forced myself to write a review for this book because of how good it was. I mean I have read many bicycling related books and this one is in my opinion the best out there. Information-packed, cover all variety of bikes and human powered vehicles. I also thought it was quite funny with the beautiful classic illustrations throughout the book. If you want to buy only one bicycling book ever then this should be it.

Best Bike Book to Buy!
Richard has done it again! If I could only own one bike book, this one would be it. Richard's English perspective (and American too) gives a flavor to this book like no other. For cyclists (or would be cyclists) that are neither "dummies" or "complete idiots" this is the book to get. I have his earlier edition which is a treasure as well. This guy can write.

Japanese High Seas Fleet (The Pan/Ballantine Illustrated History of World War II)
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (1974)
Author: Richard Humble
Amazon base price: $
Collectible price: $15.34
Average review score:

One of Richard Humble's best works.
Hard-to-find book in the 1970s Ballantine World War II Series. Humble examines the qualitative technological advantages of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and how a cultural reverence for the elderly often resulted in the IJN having the wrong fleet commander in charge at the wrong time. Occasional misspelling of Japanese names & words, but one cannot find any flaw in Richard Humble as a Naval Historian. Humble's other book in the series, Hitler's High Seas Fleet, is another seminal and definitive work.

Why do history books have to be boring?
This was written by a history professor, and you can tell. It is about as dry as can be, coldly intellectual. I know it must be accurate, and it is thoroughly researched, but it certainly doesn't "come alive". It's like your usual dry history textbook. If you want just facts, you get them here. If you want interesting reading, find another book! He could have quoted eye witnesses to help interest level - I'm sure there are still a lot of them who would share their perspectives. There is no clue how people reacted or how it changed their daily lives. It's about armies and battles but nothing about real people. History doesn't have to be so dull!

David against Goliath
I've read a Spanish edition of this hard to find book.

This is a very interesting book covering the struggle for liberty Finnish people had to fight against the Soviet rolling machine.

A lot of maps and photos help a lot to show the hard conditions in which this war took place. It's amazing to see how heavy outnumbered but very valiant troops resisted and defeated time after time overwhelming enemy forces. Sadly, Finland was finally defeated, but its heroic resistance let them go on existing as a free and independent country. Was it worth? Well, they're still there while the Soviet Union has gone forever.

I missed some more info about orders of battle and foreign voluntary units participation in the Winter War.

Excellent, thorough coverage of little known conflict
I was extremely impressed with this book. It is very detailed and the illustrations of weapons and the detailed maps really added to the text. An absolutely fascinating look at what determined, resourceful people can accomplish in defense of freedom. I would have liked a little more info and/or personal anecdotes from both sides but Russian narratives are no doubt hard to come by. Besides, it takes no great imagination to feel what the poor Russian soldiers went through as they were sent to the slaughter by their idiotic leaders-the tale of fighting men everywhere. If you are looking for a book on the Finnish war, look no further. This is a great example.
