World's Best Challah!
A friend told me about the challah recipe here. It's a marvel, and it's just about fool proof, with great shaping illustrations. I'd buy it again for this recipe alone. This book has become one of my staples. The professional baking tips are very useful, but I have to complain about any baking book that sends you to your friendly local bakery to plead for special ingredients, as this one does. Also, this book is big on baking with steam, which isn't a great idea for your slightly klutzy home baker (like me). But those recipes work pretty well without steam, in my opinion. Okay, so I cheat a little with these recipes--yet the breads still come out yummy! Don't count on this book for desserts, though. It's a BREAD book, and a very good one, particularly for people who want to understand the process and learn to do it right.

A must-have baking book!
I love to bake, and this cookbook has wonderful, easy to use recipes. I get many compliments when I make the pizza and the challah. I also have Bernard Clayton's bread cookbook, but Greenstein makes bread-baking so simple and fun! The recipes are very detailed so there's no way that one could make a mistake. If you love to bake breads, you have to put this cookbook on your shelf.

Good beyond belief
It's hard to believe that a book like this exists, since it claims to give all the secrets of Jewish baking to anyone smart enough to read the book. If anything, this is an understatement -- this book will teach you how to make nearly all of the New York-area ethnic breads, cookies, and cakes that I've ever seen.

I've tried about 10 of the recipes -- unusual for me, since I often only get 2 or 3 good recipes from a cookbook -- and every one has been great. The bagels taste like real bagels (not the Bruegger's sort), the black-and-white cookies have the right cake-like texture and not the sugar cookie base most non-New Yorkers use, the challah is definitive, and so on.

The book is an absolute must for anyone stuck out in the middle of nowhere (like I was) without a proper bakery. Even in larger metro areas, local variants on "proper" pizza, rye breads, etc. will drive you to insanity if you don't have this book. If I were to fault the book, it would be on its treatment of sourdough breads -- the recipes rely on added yeast for reliable rising. Still, from croissants and pizza to Kaiser rolls and sour rye, these are fantastic recipes: authentic and able to be made by a relatively inexperienced baker.

The Dot People
Mr. Baker has written a book that can be used by adults as well as children. This is a great guide for Dot seekers. It is a light book with a positive message. I plan to have my children read this delightful book. My wish for them is to never to lose their own DOT! "Each of us has our own Journey in life. By knowing and following our DOT, we are able to stay on the DOT path." This message has become my inter voice. Thanks George!

The greatest balancing act.
This is a great work of art done by Mr. George L. Baker. He shares with the reader his humor and his wit. The reader is taken on a journey that can only be completed by finding one's own "dot." With a positive attitude and a introspective view, one will be successful in gaining all the joys of the "dot" journey. One could not ask for a better tour guide then George Baker.

The all time balancing act.
The Dot People, Balancing Head and Heart is a great guide for individuals who are looking for their "dot." The author shares with the reader important concepts of a finding his/her "Dot." His writings guide the reader to the introspective view of one's life. He will make one smile, contemplate, and share with others. This book is definitely a book to add to any library.

Introduction to Inspector Wexford
This review refers to the paperback edition. This is a somewhat short collection of five stories featuring Inspector Wexford, a person whose age and position are similar to Inspector Morse (as seen on PBS). Four of the stories are set in England, and one on the Adriatic coast where Inspector Wexford and his wife were on vacation. Three of the stories involve murders, one a case of switched children, and the last an attempt to reopen an older, historic case. The settings seem to be in roughly the 1970's to 1980 time frame.

I personally thought that the plots were quite good for shorter stories. The stories reflect English laws and customs, so guns are not used and the violence is considerably less than in the macho, have-gun-will-travel, type novel often found in the U.S. (perhaps this is why many people like English mysteries). The characters come across well, and the plots are well developed. In one case, a guilty party is identified, but there is some question as to whether the guilt can be proven in court.

Brilliant short stories
This is a very, very good short story collection. Each of the stories within is a little gem of detective fiction./ they are just as ingenious as any of her novels, the crimes just as compelling and the psychology just as accurate. the characters are well drawn and Wexford is on absolutely brilliant form.

They are clever, incredibly enjoyable, and unguessable. They are an excellent showcase of all Rendell's talents, and i would reccomend this short story collection to any fan of detective fiction. Enjoyment is guaranteed.

Gracefully explores an important area of Washington's life
The book is a finally written, well reserched study of Washington's agricultural endeavors. As a careful examiner of Washington's life, I can tell you that the Fusonies' rpovided a much needed study of an aspect of Washington's life that was important not only to himself, but to the planter society he lived in. This book's careful study of Washington provides a better synopsis of the role of agriculture in molding the Virginia society that produces many of the leaders of the Revolution than more well-known books such as, Tobacco Culture by T.H. Breen

Excellent comprehensive resource.
Dr. Baker insures that the material covers a range of significant information relative to the community college movement in the United States. Beginning with the historic development of these institutions, the contributing authors identify community colleges' unique comprehensive mission, the evolution of their curriculum and instructional approaches, the emergence and pervasiveness of leadership in these institutions, management of fiscal and human resources, issues related to strategic planning and forces impacting community colleges, student development including assessment, and finally the future of community colleges as we enter the 21st century. A "must have" book which provides a foundation of collective wisdom for those working in or aspiring to work in community colleges in any capacity.

A great resource for any student of literature
Beginners will love The Harper Handbook. My edition is just over 600 pages, chock-full of information. The handbook alphabetically references terms that relate to literature, from terms you know (metaphor) to those you might not (prosopopoeia). The explanations it gives are concise, but very helpful, often with examples. For example, if the book is discussing pastoral dramas, it gives a list of six plays, with publication dates and playwrights. In the back of the book there is a "Chronology of Literature and World Events" that puts a date on many events in the world, Britain, and the US. There's also an index of people mentioned in handbook entries.

A Good Read!
This revealing book covers a highly charged and controversial period of American investment history. George P. Baker and George David Smith study the emergence of the investment house Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts (KKR), and follow it during the decade KKR ruled the world of leveraged buyouts. The authors begin with the early days when the partners worked together at Bear Stearns. They track the men as they build their own firm and create their own success. In clear, straightforward language, the book presents KKR's intentions and the economics of leveraged buyouts (LBOs). It discusses KKR's role in structuring and managing the deals. We [...] recommend this book as a must read for anyone interested in LBOs or the history of KKR. Executives at all levels will find the KKR saga interesting and useful.

The New Financial Capitalists
Baker (Harvard Business School) and Smith (New York Univ.) provide a well-documented history of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) and its development of the leveraged buyout (LBO). During the period 1976-93, KKR acquired more than 50 firms with an equity investment of only $10.9 billion. As of 1998, these equity investments were worth $40 billion (an annual return exceeding 28 percent). The authors examine KKR's strategy of identifying undervalued, poorly managed firms with potential to increase cash flow. Each LBO was financed with 80 to 90 percent debt, and equity was provided by a partnership organized by KKR. The LBO managers were required to have a large proportion of their net worth in the equity. After the acquisition, KKR's strategy was to cut costs and increase productivity, quickly pay down the debt, and sell the firm to unlock the equity investment. The large debt service inflicted discipline while management's investment created incentives. By linking managerial and ownership interests, Baker and Smith argue that KKR improved corporate governance and contributed to increases in corporate profits and productivity. This volume is an excellent addition to the literature on mergers, business history, and corporate strategy. Upper-division undergraduate through professional collections as well as large public libraries.

More than simply a story about KKR...
Baker and Smith have accomplished two objectives in their short book. On the surface, they have expertly captured the key elements in the development of KKR as the frontrunner of the LBO firm. However, on a deeper level, they have also captured many of the elements that managers and entrepreneurs should consider when running or starting a firm. In this regard, the Preface and Chapter Five are worth the price of admission. For anyone interested in the evolution and history of modern American finance, read this book.

A must-have for any Java programmer
This is an excellent book. There are many topics covered in a straightforward manner that you won't find anywhere else. Many clever solutions - I learned a lot from using this book and I've been programming in Java for a while. One of the few computer books worth the steep price.

Great value for intermediate/advanced
You will not be sorry if you buy this book. The book uses a straightforward approach to some of the complicated as well as simple issues. The book is very well organized, and explanations are very clear. I would not recommend it for the beginners, but even if you are just getting comfortable with Java, this book would be an excellent value. CD that comes with this book is also very helpful.

Excellent book
I really liked this book. It deals with very important topics from basic to quite advanced in a very straightforward manner. I use it all the time.
