THIS BOOK IS IN THE WRONG CATEGORY!
"Rovering to Success" is the original handbook written by Baden-Powell for Rover Scouts, the most senior section of the Boy Scout Movement. Rovers are Scouts over the age of 18 (in Canada the mandate is age 18-26). This book is NOT intended for children aged 9-12.

Rovering to Success - for young adults
Rovering to Success is probably not meant for readership in the age group of 9-12 as indicated. It is intended for Young Adults ages 17-25 (though age group for rovering varies with region and countries). It is a fundamental reading for all Rovers and aspirants. Should also consider reading "Scouting for Boys" and "The Man who lived Twice".

Dated at first glance, but still very relevant.
Rovering To Success on first glance appears to be an outmoded, elderly text that invites ridicule and giggling at the language used, but if the reader can look past the idioms of the period it was written, and see the fundamental concepts behind what Baden-Powell is saying, then it quickly becomes an excellent guide for young people who want to live a fulfilling and adventurous lifestyle. It also provides an interesting historical reference.

A Book That Changed The World
This book is the basic foundation of the largest youth organisation in the history of the world and has been printed in more editions and languages than most other books apart from the Christion Bible. It was designed to be read by young people and to motivate them to develop all of their skills. It continues to be a major force in motivating young people to prepare to be active citizens in society. However it also contains simple truths for adults on the nature of young people and how best to help them learn and to achieve their full potential. It is required reading for adults educating or working with young people. Read it, enjoy it and then come join Scouting.

A good guide to life
This book is a great read, and although it was written some 92 years ago the basic message is as true today as it was then, And as it said in the first edition "Handbook for Instruction in Good Citizenship" still applies, so read it and apply the ideas for a better world.

scouting? the bible of scouting
Escultismo para muchachos es sin duda, el origen de un movimiento de jóvenes que lucha por superarse diariamente, por la paz y por el servicio al prójimo. No es solo una lectura de niños, es toda una enseñanza para personas de cualquier edad.

Tells the true purpose of scouting as it was intended.
As you read this book you will see how little boys have changed over the history of scouting. This book goes into great details into how Baden-Powell trained his scouts. It provides activities and stories that will help you in your role as a scoutleader today. The book was written to aid in the training in the early days of WoodBadge. I recomend this book highly to anyone who believes in the purpose of scouting is to make better citizens and leaders of society. As a scoutmaster I have found this an invaluable source of ideas and inspiration.

A classic story that enlights kids and adults alike
Kids are ofthen taught about moral values with a set of guidelines and measures. In my opinion, moral can only be taught with real life examples that calls for deeper thinker after reading it. This story, though of biblical origin, sure reflects a great deal of day-to-day human thinkings and should be used as a great learning tool and I assure you, this story will be a milestone of your life after you've learned about 'Faith'

Lovely fairy tale
This book is enchanting - good story, and wonderful use of the language. Spanish was quite basic and easy to understand even for a beginner. Beautiful illustrations.

If you're a forensics fan...
I myself am hooked on the genre. I watch the Tuesday nite forensics shows on the Discovery Channel like a dog watching fire trucks roll by. So I probably would have like this book regardless.
But, Dr. Michael Baden DOES spin a good yard. I fully understand and appreciate his unique abilities to spot details of a crime scene, and link them to his experiences and past cases, that help shed light on a crime scene. With uncanny consistency, he will identify the who, what, when, where, how, and (sometimes!) why of otherwise unsolved crimes.
He does lay on his ego a little thick at times, but not to the point where it detracts from the story.
Dead Reckoning is Baden's best work, b/c it really opens up the readers' eyes and mind to the various aspects of forensic science. Confessions is a good follow-up for readers, b/c it tells some good stories about how forensic science, and in particular, Dr. Michael Baden's expertise in forensic science, has triumphed over cases that are plagued by incompetence, politics, and lack of understanding of what the crime scene facts really mean.
I think the book reads best as a series of short stories -- reading one chapter at a time, flipping around for stories that capture your interest the most.
If you have already read Dead Reckoning, give this one a try.

Mixing Medicine with Politics
The patients of medical examiners cannot explain why they died. The ME must detect this thru medical evidence, laboratory findings, the circumstances, and the patient's medical history. These circumstances are used to analyze unnatural deaths - suicide, homicide, and accidents. Forensic pathology is an untaught specialty. Apprentices train in a medical examiner's office, and learn by on the job training. MEs see the failures of society in deaths that need not have happened. Alcohol is involved in almost half of all unnatural deaths. In Europe, forensic pathologists in emergency rooms analyze victims to see what they can learn. This book contains twelve chapters on various topics from his varied experiences. Dr. Baden was a medical ME for 25 years in New York city. His book will also tell you about the politics involved in his work. It tells a lot about his experiences with the justice system.

Chapter 1 deals with celebrities, and uses the phrase "conspiracy theory" to dismiss those who use the facts to question any Official Explanation. Bobby Kennedy was NOT shot by Sirhan, who was 6 feet in the front, but by a gun held less than 3 inches from the right rear of his head. Note the careful wording of his sentence! The same careful wording is used about James Earl Ray and the question of the extent of his guilt. The sly dedication is another example of careful wording.

Dr. Baden takes the Warren Report position on the JFK assassination. The experienced trauma doctors at Parkland all said the shots came from the front. But it was not inevitable that conspiracy theories would arise, any more than they did with Lincoln. He says JFK's autopsy was bungled. Some in Europe (who have an older history) said this clumsiness was sanctioned as a way to destroy evidence. The doctor who did it had never performed an autopsy on a gunshot wound; he didn't know the difference between and exit and entry wound. Dr. Milton Helpern later suggested more experienced MEs should have been called it. His name was then removed from the list of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (but this was no conspiracy). The Warren Commission did not seek advice from any forensic pathologist, but this was no conspiracy. Finding the "magic bullet" with no deformities by somebody's stretcher was not a conspiracy either. "The result was an autopsy report filled with errors, sins of omission and commission" (p.13). But it was no conspiracy! The doctor who did the Bethesda autopsy said "the complexities of these fractures and the fragments thus produced tax satisfactory verbal description and are better appreciated in photographs and roentgenograms which are prepared" (p.10). Has a doctor avoided a verbal description in any other case? Other books better document the problems of this case.

Coroners & Big City Politicians are on Different Pages
"Unnatural Death: Confessions of a Medical Examiner" by Michael M. Baden, MD and Judith Adler Hennessee, ISBN 0-8041-05999-5 (p/b), Ivy Books 1989 - is a 215 page disclosure by a seasoned pathologist and NYC medical examiner (25 years & Chief ME 1978-79).

It is a well-written and indexed (7 pages) mind-probing study of many high-profile cases of unnatural deaths (suicides, homicides, & accidents) & some unsual but natural ones. Dr. Baden discusses some of the little known but extremely significant political intrigues he encountered, revealing facts known only to certain medical examiners, DA's, politicians in high office and prominent family members.

The introduction describes the pseudo-victimization "abduction" of T. Brawley (1987) and 12 chapters follow with Chap. 1 detailing Dr. Baden's selection to head forensic pathology for the 1977 Congressional Select Committee on Assassination (JFK); Chap. 2 his studies at Bellevue; Chap. 3 some notes on Elvis Presely, the Nurses Perez & Narcisco Pavulon deaths prosecution blocked by Imelda Marcos, and the ricin death of Markov (1978); Chap. 4 with concise notes on history of coroner system and Chap. 5 details Baden's confrontations with NYC Mayor Koch, Manhattan DA Robert Morganthau, and Health Commissioner Ferrer over handling of the David Levine, Willie Welch, Robert Soman, and Nelson Rockefeller cases, to mention a few.

Chapters that follow are lucrative and revealing of forensic science at its best and politics at its worst. The accusations against Claus von Bulow of twice trying to murder his wife "Sunny" by insulin injections revealed a frightening tribunal jungle of medical & legal specialists whose main concern was (evidently) to thwart possible perceived malpractice charges. For unrevealed & appalling details of the 'preppy murder' of Jennifer Levin by Robert Chambers (discussed on the Larry King show Aug. 26, 2002) look in this book. This is a no holds barred book, a must read for those who "thought they knew what happened" really didn't happen and vice versa.

Juel does not do the founder of Scouting Justice
Actually the full title of this book is Baden-Powell, The Boy-Man. This is a well researched but dry treastie of the founder of Scouting. You get the strong sense that Juel knows very little of Scouting and was writing the book more from the point of having been a fellow military officer. What is sad however is that Juel seems to be taking part in a relatively recent phenomenon in our culture to shatter our hero figures. We now know George Washington did not really cut down the Cherry tree and Abe Lincoln was manic depressive. Juel want's everyone to know that B-P had his faults as well. In much the same vein that some historian muckrakers spend their time in an effort at character assination, Juel has devoted the thrust of his effort into a character assination of B-P. Anyone who is interested in Baden-Powell could find many other books in print that are far more readable than this one (Green Bar Bill Hillcourt's Two Lives of a Hero comes to mind and it is available right here on Amazon). Despite its relatively recent release the book flopped and was quickly discontinued, Scouters would not waste time or money reading it, scout shops would not carry it, and it is, after all, a dull and uninspired effort at best. The Boy Man & the Character Factory (by Rosenthal) are two B-P Books Scouters would do well to skip.

The definitive history of Robert Baden-Powell
An excellent read. I was impressed at the volume of information Jeal had at his disposal in researching the book. With all the references he had I cannot but think that this book IS the definitive history of Baden-Powell. Yes the book does raise some controversial questions about Baden-Powell but Jeal does not attempt to label Baden-Powell in any way; instead presenting to the reader facts from people close to Baden-Powell including extracts from Baden-Powells own diaries. The reader can draw their own conclusions. I found Jeals book to be an excellent read and an wonderful insight into the life and culture that existed during Baden-Powells life, and in particular, his army career. The worldwide Scouting movement owes Baden-Powell so much and I think every scout leader should read this book. I did!

Excellent, 5 years of research, Diary and letter references
Tim Jeal was given unrestricted access to the unrivalled family archive by the great-nephew Mr. Francis Baden-Powell. There are many pictures in this book that cannot be found anywhere else. Tim Jeal spent five years of research prior to writing this book. There are FIVE pages of acknowledgements which include, British Scout Association, Mr. J L Tarr (Chief Scout Executive of BSA) and numerous other sources. Mr Jeal was born in 1945. He attended Westminster School and Christ Church in Oxford. His previous biography of David Livingstone was honored by the literary editors of The New York Times and the Washington Post. He lives in north London with his wife and three daughters. Tim Jeal was cognizant of the gap that existed in Lord Baden-Powell's not having a full and objective biography. He spent five years on research. He was able to obtain unique access to people who knew Baden-Powell and to a huge amount of unstudied private papers of Lord Baden-Powell. This is an EXCELLENT book and the many references from Baden-Powell's Diaries and Letters give candid and honest information that cannot be found anywhere else. A must read for those who are interested in having access to information not normally available and making up their own minds.

Academic PC Non-Sense
Did we really need another revisionist history written with the sole purpose of showing that everything European and "Colonial" is bad and all native peoples are good, virtuous, etc., etc?

Given the current standards for degree granting(that work must break new ground to be worth an advanced degree)the academic community has been gleefully re-writing history for years to fit their fantasy scenarios and strange political/ social theories.

It is a pity that these authors could not be using their academic skills for something better than pandering to the new political and social powers of South Africa, and to the PC pirates and thought control police of the rest of the world.
