Simply enchanting
I read this book as a child and loved it. It is the story of a stray cat who eventually finds a home with people to love him. It was written in 1938 by Tom Robinson with beautiful charcoal illustrations by Peggy Bacon. It is a must-read for a child as well as an adult.

Prose which still affects our thinking
Literature before James Joyce, before Jane Austen, before Daniel Defoe: No Ulysses, no Emma, no Robinson Crusoe - for modern readers it is hard to imagine a stock of English literature without the existence of these and other important writers and their 'novels'. What kind of literature could one refer to in a pre-novelistic age? As a matter of fact, there were authors, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Francis Bacon, who wrote prose which, indeed, still affects our thinking. However, neither More nor Bacon used English, but chose Latin as their original means of expression. For what reasons? And none of these authors was in fact a free-lance writer - they were all occupied in public and political spheres. What made them actually write fictional works? How does their fiction relate to their cultural environment - or, what was regarded as 'fiction'? These texts cover a century of political, religious, scientific and literary debates and gave rise to a new understanding of knowledge, and introduced influential literary devices.

This book needs an editor
I was required to read this book for a technical writing class. I was amazed that a book that boasts it can teach technical documentation could have so many glaring errors in grammar and spelling. (Maybe that's why so many people don't read manuals.)
While the book does well as a step-by-step approach, most of the information is in other books. I would not recommend this book.

Great in-depth book for the new Tech Writer
I got this book through an online cetification class for writing user manuals and reference guides. I never would have found this book had it not been for that class. This book is great in that it takes you through the 7 steps of documentation. I'd recommend this book for those getting started in the technical writing field and those who are senior members. The author also chunks the information in a way that is easily understandable. Great book!

Well-organized, clear, and to the point
This is *the* book a new technical writer should read. Barker really knows his stuff--and he presents it in truly usable form. I especially liked his 3-category approach: writing to teach (for eager learners), to guide (for reluctant users of the product), or to provide a reference (for experts who need only occasional support).

Bacon's Rebellion, 1676

Engaging but Brief
At first glance this 58-page, unadorned book was not impressive. Once the reading of it had begun, however, I found I could not put it down until I had read the final page. It clearly described the immediate terrors and frustrations of the early American colonists in the Virginia settlements with the greedy, self-absorbed English Governor on the one side and the hostile, sometimes brutal, Native American tribes on the other side. The author gives a play-by-play account of the events as they occurred giving the reader a brief sense of being there. The only reason I have for giving this book a rank of 3 lies in it's abrupt end and lack of details about dates, places and participants. While I learned a great deal more about the lives of the colonists at the time of Bacon's Rebellion, I did not learn anything more of those who gave their lives in this prelude to the Revolutionary War than what I might have found in any encyclopedia.

Seeds of Bacon's Rebellion Grew Liberty for All
A few years ago a grave was exhumed at Williamsburg in the never-ending search for the final resting place of Nathaniel Bacon. It provide no new clues, but people continue the search. This little 60-page book published in 1957 explains why people continue searching. Bacon was one of the truly early (one hundred years before the Union) patriots that sought to lift the heavy yoke of taxation while granting all men the rights of equal representation. While much of what Wertenbaker covers can be found in a good Encyclopedia, you'll still find some additional information about the early white settlers to this continent and their involvement with England as well as the role the Indian Wars played in the "Bacon Rebellion". Wertenbaker provides numerous quotations from correspondence between Sir William Berkley and Bacon as well as others at this fire storm of revolt which would never be fully extinguished until decades later with the break from England's hold. It covers not only Bacon's life but also the mystery surrounding his last remains.
