A classic
few people have read Babcock, those who have know that he is one of the finest outdoor writers ever. This is a book you will read over and over. I give this book to friends and particularly children of friends. In a society increasingly intolerant of hunting this book teaches a subtle message of tolerance without being overtly aggressive. This book will touch your heart and send you to the store for more Babcock.

I Don't Want to Shoot an Elephant
A great book full of wonderful stories. A must read for any lover of the outdoors. Although some of the stories were written 40-50 years ago they are just as readable and meaningfull today as then. Some will bring tears to your eyes while others will have you rolling on the floor in laughter. Babcock is a great writer!

A wonderful classic returns.....
This book written by the late Professor Havilah Babcock can only be described as a classic of its day.(Although honestly, any of his titles qualify for the same description.) Some may be offended by what seems to be a mild racism,ISthere such athing as "mild racism") but it is nessary to keep in mind the times in which Babcock lived and wrote...The series of stories/aricles/essays that make up this book capture a almost gone subculture of the South and do so in a way only someone who both lived in it and loved it dearly could do. The writing almost totally deal with one of two subjects: quail hunting and fishing in lowcountry South Carolina, with a side trip or two to the love of dogs, and just plain old gentle happy memories of a man who loved the life he had and wanted people to know he loved it...In the years to come I have no doubts that this book will be remember as the classic it is, and it will become more widely read, and if all that truly comes to pass, it couldn't happen to a better book

Vintage stories of bird hunting and fishing in the South/.
A must for every gentleman bird hunter, fisherman, or dog owner/. Dr/. Babcock tells of his pursuit of Bob White, fishing for breem, and his fascination with as well as tribulations over bird dogs/. Humor permeates stories about the perfect quail gun, ownership of the near-perfect hunting dog, the secret weapon of breem fishing-- the catawba worm and the virtues of the old cross rail fences/

Tales of Quails'n Such
Havilah Babcock does an excellent job of giving a full picture of what it is really like to hunt and fish. He gives it in such a way that it seems as if he is telling you a story face to face.

Experience both in the field and with the pen are shown.
Babcock has the uncanny ability to select just the right word or phrase to describe an event or personal trait. I enjoyed his ability to take the ordinary and familiar and make them come alive with the English language. Only the person who has spent considerable time on the lake or in the field will realize how realistic his accounts truly are.
