A boy on a remote planet lost his parents in a war. In despair, he (in this order) trod on flowers, kicked a dog, shot everything in sight, stole a plane, robbed a nice old woman, dumped a girl, built a robot to terrorize people - then flew to the moon to live with a hermit. "Perhaps we can learn something from this boy," the book ponders in the end.
I have been trying hard to figure out what that "something" might be, so far to no avail.
The book tries to explain really big things, like war, trauma, violence, loneliness to kids. Not a bad thing in itself, but the targeted kids are also supposed to believe in hundred-feet tall robots weighing thousands of tons turning into rocketships, and so on, like, four-year old kids.
Now, you decide if it's a good idea to raise questions to a four, five, or six year old kid on the most fundamental protocols of civilized society. And you decide if you want your child to admire a hero with such a rap sheet as our Blue Boy's.
