what an eccentric man
I have been seeing the todd oldham commerical for target and started buying some of his stuff, so, I decided to order this book. Todd sounds like he is very interesting and eccentric. After all the moving around that he has done, he seems worldly. I would like to see more of his commercial. Is there anything out on the market with his photograph?

Todd is a very creative and interesting person
this book was very intersting. i learned a lot about my favorite fashion designer. it was set up as an interview between Todd and Jen Bilik, so you really get to see his personality and his outlook on life- i also enjoyed Kevin Aucoin's contribution to the book(it was funny)

Incredible
This incredible story of the outstanding designer Todd Oldham is just remarkable....even though he's a GREAT designer...he also has a story behind...this is a must get for ALL fashion lovers! Love you Todd!

This book is unbelievable, but spare me with the politics...
I absolutely love Kevyn Aucoin. He is not only very talented and extremely creative, but he also seems to genuinely love and respect women. I think he was one of the people responsible for Courtney Love's transformation a few years back. You will not believe how much he makes celebrities look like other people, it is mind-blowing. (If any of you know who the hilarious Amy Sedaris is and have seen her on "Strangers with Candy," you MUST look at this book!) This book is very inspiring, even to "every day" people.

HOWEVER...

Spare me the political stuff. I really felt offended by some of the things he says. At one point he refers to 50s family values being questionable. I wish he had either explained himself a little or omitted it. Not all of the women reading his book are single, fabulous 20-somethings living in NYC or LA. Some of us are stay-at-home mothers, housewives, etc., and I for one felt a little, I guess, excluded. It just ruined the book for me in a way (hence the 4 stars). There are some hypocritical statements in the book, if you ask me. Not sure why he feels he needs to include them. I'll still look at it again, but I'll mostly avoid the print, and I probably won't buy it for the aforementioned reasons(although I do have his last book).

KEVYN DOES IT AGAIN!
Once again, Kevyn Aucoin astonishes us with his cosmetic artistry. I bought Making Faces last year and it has been a staple of my beauty routine since. Face Forward reads easy and is filled to the brim with beautiful photography of some of the most influential women of our time including Madonna, Winona Ryder, Cher and Gwyneth Paltrow. He also transforms their already gorgeous faces to reflect the personal style and image of some of the greatest screen legends of all time like Audrey Hepburn, Faye Dunaway and Liz Taylor. If for nothing else, view this book for the beautiful artistry and photography...you'll love it!

Superb, just like his others!
Kevyn Aucoin is more than a makeup artist, he's a magician. A true artiste, he takes both everyday people and celebrities we're all accustomed to seeing, and turns them into someone completely different. The pictures are amazing, and the step by step instructions are simple and clear. The one thing the book doesn't provide are specific names and colors of the makeup that is used, so it can be hard to emulate the looks. However, despite that, it's still amazing to look through!

If you already have his Art of Makeup book--don't need this
Basically, a fair to good book full of valuable information about different makeup "looks." His techniques, which he shows how to do only moderately well, cover the range from "the gamine," "the glamour girl," "the innocent," all the way to...you guessed it..."normal, everyday" people. While this would be a helpful book for someone already armed with a little bit of makeup know-how, I don't think it would be especially enlightening for someone who isn't. Anyone who looks with a critical eye at fashion magazines can probably figure out what makeup he or she would need to create these looks. And basically, Aucion has taken most of the photographs in the books from photo shoots from magazines (I've seen a lot of the same pictures in _Allure_ magazine, etc.). Still, this is a good basic book if you're a makeup junkie, but not that much different from his "Art of Makeup" book. If you bought that one, you probably don't need this one. Although if you asked me which one I prefer, I would say "Making Faces."

It's a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves the art of makeup!
I bought this book skeptically after hearing from a friend how helpful it was in describing techniques. The georgeous photos would have sold it for me anyhow, but Aucoin's 'Making Faces' actually taught me how to do makeup. I've always done the same thing...which was basically go natural or play with makeup till I looked like a clown then scrub it all off. It's a simple approach that is easily accessible. The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book. At least borrow it from a friend. It's one of the books you'll consistently turn to for tips and tricks. It's an excellent resource and a whole lot of fun. The photos and styles cover all ages, from young and cute teenage to mature sophisticated and sexy women to a really hot guy in drag (double take is an understatement). Aucoin not only uses "Stars" but also 'real' people (meaning their looks aren't a direct part of their job) in showing the techniques and how they cause such transformations.

Look beautiful no matter your age, size or heritage
If you're serious about applying makeup, this book is for you. Aucoin gives detailed instructions on how to achieve any makeup look from natural to extremely dramatic. He also lets the reader in on the secrets of the stars: you too can look like Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe, if you follow his instructions.

I was especially pleased to see Aucoin's techniques demonstrated not just on glamorous stars but also on normal people of all ages and sizes and both sexes. He's got a lot of common sense, too; he puts only minimal makeup on his teenage models (they still look like teenagers after he's done -- what a concept!) and he doesn't think much of child beauty pageants.

The book isn't perfect, though. Aucoin advocates putting eyeliner inside the lash line. Most eye doctors will tell you that's a bad idea, and so will most of us who lived through the first time this idea became popular. Pinkeye, anyone?

He also doesn't put much emphasis on choosing the right colours for the reader's complexion. He advocates complete freedom, which of course is fine for someone experienced with choosing their makeup colours but doesn't help the neophyte who needs advice.

But those are pretty minor complaints. This book is a fantastic tool for the person with some experience in applying cosmetics. I recommend it highly.

Does not show you techniques rather it just shows pictures
Does not show you techniques rather it just shows pictures! After buying this book- I was very disappointed since I thought it will show me makeup tips and tricks, rather it just shows displays of women's faces. You will waste your money on purchasing this book.

From a Modern Makeup Master
I have followed Aucoin's work very closely, and as a professional makeup artist, I can say that he has picked up the brush where Way Bandy put it down. If you are a professional makeup artist, beauty/fashion photographer, model, or makeup maven, this is definitely the book to own. It has page after page of some of the industry's most sought-after faces, captured wearing some of Aucoin's best artwork. The makeup styles transcend time, yet he does manage to associate certain "looks" with specific decades. Besides supermodels, actresses and other famous faces, the book also includes faces that represent the "real" woman--including an astonishing makeover for his mother. Laid out in traditional coffee-table book style, the book is also a tremendous resource. There are a few step-by-step makeups, as well as a generous helping of tips, tricks and pointers. In addition to the stunning photography, the book is also pleasant to read. There is his wonderful "how I made it" story, as well as personal stories about encounters with his rich and famous "canvases". There is a down-to-earth quality that emanates from the words, and this was confirmed when I got the chance to meet Kevyn personally during a book signing. He's not only a tremendously talented makeup artist, but a fantastic person as well

Simply marvelous!
Kevyn Aucoin is truly THE MASTER of make up. I have learned so many techniques, do's and don't s that it is truly unbelievable. Once you open this book you are summerged into his wonderful world of creativity and art. You see how he is able to transform the looks of wonderful women and make the best of them by applying makeup correctly, taking you step by step, teaching you this and how to create different looks and styles for different occasions.
