Incredible Resource About the Arab-Israeli Conflict
The Arab-Israeli conflict is a fiercely debated topic with numerous accusations constantly being thrown back and forth. For someone just beginning to study the Arab-Israeli conflict, it can be overwhelming. This book is a collection of maps drafted by a professional cartographer to show the real dimensions of treaties, ceasefires, boycotts, and other historical moments in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Would you like to know exactly which land the Oslo Agreements included?

Would you like to know which parts of the Middle East belonged to biblical Israel?

Would you like to know which parts of Britain's Palestine Mandate they forbid Jews to dwell or buy land on?

This resource can answer all those question and more graphically showing you the exact boundaries of, countries involved in, and other important aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict. I particularly found this resource helpful in disputing allegations by people that "such-and such a percentage" of the land was to be given up in a treaty such as the original U.N. plan for Palestine or under the Oslo Agreements. After showing my fellow debater the actual maps, the arguments were ended since I was in possession of hard fact thanks to this fine reference book.

Sir Martin Gilbert is a well-acclaimed British scholar, who has written numerous titles in the Historical Atlas series, extensively written about the Arab-Israeli conflict, and was also officially appointed to write the biography of Sir Winston Churchill.

I have reviewed the 1984 Fourth Edition, but several editions have since come out with updated information and additional maps to reflect more recent developments. I recommend getting the most recent edition available.

I highly recommend this outstanding resource for anyone studying the Arab-Israeli conflict, whether pro-Arab or pro-Israeli.

An indispensable sourcebook
Professor Gilbert may know more about this subject than any other scholar, and despite some inherent difficulties has reconstructed geographical areas with great precision. Even those who disagree with his views (occasionally expressed in the explanatory captions) must acknowledge the consumate scholarship underlying his maps--which have no "attitudes," only facts.

Great Book, Very Worthwhile
Very informative. Gives a good understanding of the conflict by one of the best historians alive right now. Buy it.

An Excellent companion
This is a terrific companion for anyone reading about World War One. The pages are filled with greatly detailed maps and footnotes that illuminate actions of armies, front line positions, withdrawls, alliances etc...
A valuable tool to reference to when reading a book that may not be mapped or with few or poorly drawn maps.

Atlas of World War I
Martin Gilbert describes his Atlas of World War One as an "introductory guide" but the reader will come away with much more than a mere introduction to the Great War. Gilbert uses 164 maps to illustrate virtually every aspect of the war from the first shots to the middle east to Africa to the final lines of the Versailles treaty. It even has maps of unfought campaigns of 1919.

Gilbert clearly has a thorough understanding of his subject and knows what makes for an effective war atlas. Color maps would have been more aesthetically pleasing, but something must remain for the eventual third edition. This book virtually eliminates any need for another rival atlas to be compiled, and any serious scholar of the war should endeavor to purchase this fine volume.

Absolutely indispensable
Whether you are a historical dabbler or a veteran, this book of maps and charts in exceptionally useful in deciphering the wordy mash that so many of the histories become. Keep it handy when reading any WW1 book.

A beautiful collection of reproductions
I picked this book up at the National Gallery of Art in Washinton DC in the summer of 1998. It's a beautiful collection of old French posters, programs and advertisements. A wonderful addition to a collection of either art or French history books!

Very informative
To read this book is a mitzvah. I showed this book to a survivor whos village no longer exists. She started to cry when her village was mentioned and she said "someone does remember us". This was very touching and I think that all survivors should know that there are many who still remember. The thing that I felt that was lacking, is that there was very little detail of when of Jews of Italy and Greece were deported to the camps.

Great book by Gilbert, excellent maps
This book is similar to The Atlas of Jewish History; Martin Gilbert. I love maps. This is the first time I see antient maps in one place. This book adds colour and text to the original Atlas. I would recommend this one for non-historians (I gave one to my 12-year old son), the Atlas is for a more serious reader.

In any case, both atlases are very informative and pleasure to have.

This Book Is The Greatest!!
This book is a "must have" for anyone in the industry who is trying to get ahead. I received this book as a Christmas present in 2001. By the end of February, 2002, I was offered a songwriter's publishing contract with a division of Warner Bros./Warner-Chappel (which I found listed in the 2002 Musician's Atlas). Every contact you could ever need is in this book. The price is definitely right (and worth it)! Get your copy...

The Routledge Atlas of Arab-Israeli Conflict (Routledge Historical Atlases)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (November, 2002)
Author: Martin Gilbert
Amazon base price: $75.00

Priceless reference to the whole Arab-Israeli issue.
A priceless study and reference to the 'age-old' Arab-Israeli conflict by Sir Martin Gilbert, a renown expert on the subject.

The whole history of the Arab-Jewish conflict is traced in detail, especially from the turn of the 20th Century right through to the recent so-called 'peace process'.

Approximately 150 detailed maps are provided, depicting wars, violence, political 'agreements', negotiations and cease-fires, all together with their dates and context.

Of particular note are the maps surrounding the 'plans' for Palestine surrounding the Balfour Declaration of 1917, maps outlining the land promised to the Jews through British pledges for the provision of a Jewish homeland and the subsequent 'border changes' due to large areas of this impending Jewish land being 'ceded' for the creation of the Arab state of Transjordan.

Some very useful maps are even provided dated 1,000BC to 636AD pertaining to the Jewish presence in 'Palestine' before the Arab conquest. The Jewish presence is also documented in 'Palestine' from the Arab conquest of 636AD to 1914 and onwards.

Comprising some 180 pages, this is a must-have reference for any serious student in this subject. These historic maps can only be a thorn in the side of the 'new-historians' who seek to de-Judaize the Promised Land. Highly recommended.

Another recommended work by Sir Martin Gilbert is "Exile And Return; The Struggle For A Homeland".

Great source!
The book is easy to follow and understand and has simple diagrams that complement the reading.

A beautifully done and accessible neuroanatomy text.
This is one of several books I bought while in med school studying neuroscience. This is a beautiful text, with wonderful drawings, good use of catscans and MRIs, and an excellent layout. It helped me considerably to learn the anatomy of the spinal cord and brain. Since I am deaf and they couldn't deal with it in a classroom (looking down at microscopes does not make lipreading easy or help my interpreters)...they sent me to the morgue with medical students and nursing students. This book provided the background I needed to do well in this situation, because the drawings were explicit enough to be recognizeable when presented with the real thing. I also use this book with deaf students who I hope to encourage to go into science. The drawings always get them interested enough to ask questions, and that is what good science is about. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

Well rounded
John H., Phd Martin constructed a well-rounded neuroanatomical textbook. The material covers every anatomical aspect of the n.s. including chapters on embryonic development and vascular anatomy. The text is continuously tied in with detailed images (ct, mri, & myelin stained slices of c.n.s.). The reading material is exceptionaly easy for its class. The book gets very detailed, and will make you a leading source on neuroanatomy. Author comment: "Even though this book came out a few years back in '96, the material today is still very similar and they do not get any user-friendlier."
