A little genderplay, anyone?
I wish I lived in Western Canada so I could have a chance to see Taste This (the performance troup whose work is showcased in this book) in action! The four members give some great memoirs and assorted stories of growing up different in terms of gender and sexuality. I wanted the book to go on and on because every story makes you stop and rethink the terms of gender forced upon us by society. And don't even get me started on the pictures!!! :)

great book!!!!
"Boys Like Her" is a GREAT BOOK!!!! It's incredibly well-written, each member of Taste This has their own unique voice in their writing and it makes for very eclectic, great reading, and the photographs are awesome!!!! This book and the contents of it definitely shine some light on transgender and gender issues in general, and that info is much needed!! This book helped me to come to terms with my own gender identity, and made me feel proud about whoever/whatever I am!!! :D All the members of Taste This are AWESOME!!!! So go buy this already!!!!

This book is amazing!
No matter what your gender or identification(butch, femme, trans, etc..) you'll find this book to be one of the most touching/thought- provoking books you've ever read.

An Excellent Resource!
This book is a must have begining chiropractors. My husband and I each read the book individually then compared notes. Our busienss just opened this week and are thrilled with the info we gleened from this book. There were helpful tips on every facet of running the busienss and I am glad we read it prior to start-up. I am sure it will save us time and money in the long run! The book was worth every penny. Dr. Delman gives successful practice tips from his own experiences in the industry. It is a very straightforward read. We are excited to get our business started with this valuable resource at hand. We have recomended his book to numerous of my husbands class mates and will continue to do so!

This is a must have!
Dr. Ivan Delman's "The Business of Chiropractic: How to Prosper After Startup" is a must have for any DC from the new graduate to the established doctor looking to expand or to simply run their practice more efficiently. I've found this book to be a great resource and wealth of information and strongly recommend it to others especially if you are a new graduate who feels as if their chiropractic institution did not adequately prepare you for the business world. Joseph Kostuch DC

Awesome book
Ivan Delman's "Business of Chiropractic" is, without a doubt,
the best source on starting and running a successful chiropractic
office that I have read yet. Whenever I hire a new associate,
they read this book first, before they do anything else. Everyone
that I interview and every student that interns at my office is
recommended that they read this book. Every other practice
management book I have read is full of "fluff". Ivan breaks it
down to "brass tacks" and gives you the meat and potatoes. The
only negative comment I have is that I did not have this book
when I started my practice!

Strange Life of Ivan Osokin: A Novel
Published in Paperback by Arkana (May, 1989)

Average review score:

Strange Indeed....or is it?
You seldom come across books which can significantly change your way of thinking or maybe your life for good. This is definitely one such book. I accidently came upon it when I was searching for one of Colin Wilson's books and came upon Strange Life of P.D. Ouspensky which in turn led to this book.

The protagonist, Ivan Osokin, is someone with whom most of us can empathize with. He's someone who would like another chance to live his life again so that he can make use of opportunities he wasted. He is blessed when he finds a magician who can exactly do this - send him back in time with the memories of the "future". He finds himself being a schoolboy again and at a critical path of his life. The strange thing being - now its difficult for him to believe any of it. His memory of "future" starts fading slowly and he finds that the inertia of fate is not easy to get rid of. He's taking the same decisions that he took the last time. His "memory" reduces to a plain deja vu and he's left wondering whether any of it was really true.

Giving away more will destroy the pleasure of reading.

Ouspensky's insights will leave you spellbound till the end. I just wish I had read it a few years earlier.

An amazing book.
Over the years, I've recommended this book to my friends at least twenty times, and I have for sure recommended it to every psychologist, or anyone in any sort of therapy, that I have known. I read it when I was in college, doing the usual recreational drugs, and reading widely. This book amazed and dumbfounded me, probably more than any other book. The author possesses what seemed to me to be a rare quality (conceited and/or foolish as I am), and that is, he knows more about human nature, and the way the world works, than I do, and he can write about it.

The form of the book is a novel; the protagonist is beset by difficulties that he feels somehow responsible for, but, that he cannot understand. Like all of us? As the story unfolds, we see that this novel is unlike any other, as it examines the protagonist's role in the minutest details of events, and shows how these events contribute to the inevitablity of what seem on the surface to be chance or uncontollable outcomes.

One lesson I drew from the book is to try to 'look deeply' at things. There is the reality that our concious mind registers and that changes moment to moment, and there are currents of meaning that are constant and don't change, but that are not recognized for what they are and are not acknowledged by our concious mind. However, our unconcious mind is fully aware of these currents, and their reality is more substantial than the concious reality. Does that make any sense? Probably not. Be assured that 'Osokin' is an interesting tale, not pyschobabble like my attempted explication.

Ouspensky was a follower of Gurjeiff, and there are still Gurjeiff groups that meet to discuss his thoughts. My last boss at a tech firm was a leader of such a group! I found out from him that Gurjeiff-ans think that the movie "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray is in the spirit of "Osokin". I agree. The setups are the same, a day, or a life, to live over, however, what follows is entirely different.

Essential reading for anyone who wonders.."what if"
From a music student to a student of Hermetic Science - this book changed my whole life, and way of thinking.

Ouspensky manages to combine real human feeling and longings with fantasy and dreams.

Enjoy!

Most Excellent
This is absolutely the best book of being a witness for Christ I have ever heard before. I recommend every Christian alive read this powerful testimony. It will be a guaranteed encouragement for you.

Precious Christian Example
Vanya's life is a plain, though powerful, example of the soul who seeks Jesus' will and no more on this earth. And is a great demonstration of what Jesus can do with the believer who loves Him more than himself or any thing in this world.

Vanya - A life worth living.
Through extreme persecution for his faith, Vanya saw opportunity to praise the God who gave him the strength to do so - to the very end. An excellent life, an excellent book.

My favorite thing
One of my favorite things is "This House of Sky" by Ivan Doig. I look forward every evening to another saga in the life of this Scot. He is an admirable writer with the heart of a poet. What he has done for Montana is beyond measuring. I prize this book, my introduction to Ivan Doig.

A loving gift
This House of Sky is an incredible gift to Doig's (the author) father and grandmother. Doig writes with grace and beauty in remembering his life with them in Montana when life was sometimes something to be physically endured. For example, his picture of a small town after a blizzard: 'In the fresh calm, wood smoke climbed straight up from chimneys, until it appeared as if the fat gray ribbons were dangling all the town's houses down into a bowl of snow.'

You must read this book. Then, give copies as gifts to everyone you love.

Growing up in Big Sky Country
As a writer, Ivan Doig is something of a favorite son in Montana, and for good reason. His memoir is a rhapsody of affection for the land where he grew up -- the small towns, homesteads and ranches in the Smith River Valley, along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, extending north to the Blackfeet Reservation on the Canadian border. It's also a wonderful and often touching story of a father and son. Born in 1939, Doig begins his tale with the emigration of his forebears from Scotland to Montana. At the end, in the 1970s, he has emerged as a writer with a graduate degree, living in Seattle, with rich and deeply felt memories of the people and the land he has known -- the house of sky.

An only child, his mother dying when he is six years old, Doig is raised by his father, Charlie, who works various jobs, sheepherding, haying, moving from place to place, and for a while leasing a small ranch of his own, his son in tow. Charlie is a hard-working man, with a big heart and tender love for his son. Concerned by a turn of bad health, he is reconciled to his mother-in-law, who did not approve of her daughter's marriage to him, and the three of them become a family that remains together until Charlie's death at age 70.

The book captures and preserves in detail a way of life that has almost vanished from America. Doig tells of growing up in wide open spaces among livestock and wildlife, learning from his father the skills of making a living off the land and surviving against the odds. He attends small town schools, spending the winters in rented rooms, seeing his father and grandmother only on weekends. Much of his time spent with adults or alone, he grows up more quickly than his peers and learns to love solitude.

At 300+ pages, this is not a long book, but it's no page-turner. You find yourself reading it slowly, relishing the rich prose style that captures the poetry in this landscape of mountains, valleys, and plains, as well as the people, with their personal quirks, habits, ways of talking, and often eccentric behavior. In fact, the book reads much like a novel, full of stories, colorful characters, humor, pathos, suspense, and adventures. The vividness of Doig's writing reflects his training as a journalist, and I suspect that he may have been influenced more than a little by the novels of Thomas Wolfe. I recommend "This House of Sky" to anyone with an interest in the West, nature writing, books about growing up, family sagas, ranching and rural life. As a companion volume, I recommend Wallace Stegner's "Wolf Willow," about his boyhood in southwestern Saskatchewan.

The Story of a Soldier: Something for All Ages!
I think everyone will find something to relate to in this book! For the generations of people who lived and fought during World War II, this book will bring back memories of that intense and brave time period. For younger generations, you will experience a sense of pride and patriotism as you read about those who fought for our country. Author Ivan Mehosky makes us feel as though we really know his father, Colonel Mehosky. I could not help but think of my own grandparents as I read this wonderful narrative.

Inspirational reading from cover to cover!
The Story of a Soldier is a superb story of one soldiers heroism, patriotism and love for both family and country. It vividly depicts the rigorous training and life of an airborne soldier spanning 30 years and through 3 wars. Throughout his career, Col. Mehosky lead by example, through moral integrity and courage. I have personally taken several leadership techniques and successfully applied them in my daily routine as a manager for a major corporation. After reading this book, everyone will have a new found respect for the 101st and all those who risked their lives for our freedom. Powerful from start to finish, The Story of a Soldier is a must read. You will love this book!

The Story of a US Hero by a proud son for a Grateful Nation
This book follows the military career of a man who deserves a sincere thank you, not only for his heroic actions in WWII, Korea and Vietnam but more importantly for his steadfast committment to providing leadership and superb training for the men under his command. He taught his men to think and react and without a doubt his leadership saved countless lives. At whatever rank, Col. Ed Mehoskey, an original member of H Co. 506th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne (HBO's and Stephen Ambrose's epic Band of Brothers focused on E Co.)led by example and raised the "Bar" to heights that were attainable and necessary to prepare men for battle. War is hell but when the going got tough, the tough men under Mehosky's command got going! This true account of a soldier's military career spanning nearly 4 decades is testimony to the American Spirit. Mehosky is a great example of the "Greatest Generation" and he personally instilled in his men the desire to "Be the Best". Learn what it meant to go three up and three down and to be trained and ready for combat under any circumstance. This excellent book left me with a greater knowledge and understanding of the sacrifices and triumphs an officer in the US Army had on the men under his command while geting ready and fighting to defend the freedoms we Americans hold so dear. For any reader who wants to know more about the spirit and courage that has propelled America to become the leader of the Free World you must read this book. God Bless Col. Ed Mehosky and the men of his generation and above all else God Bless the USA.

Let me say first
that I had to buy THREE copies of the first book, because it would 'disappear' when I lent it to friends. I certainly wore out the binding of each copy myself, because it was one of the funniest books I'd ever read hands down. Naturally, when the sequel, "Revelation X" hit the shelves, I needed to have it, even though I knew I'd already given enough money to these raving hucksters(I mean, I loved the Church-bought the mebership and all). While not as side splittingly funny as the first one, this is still light years ahead of any other humor books. Each SubGenius book is literally crammed with things to read and look at, artwork and rants and gag philosophy from embittered nerds all over the world apparently, all about the mythical figure of Bob Dobbs and his plan to save us from the maw of the Conspiracy that is perpetuated by so-called normal people to destroy noncomformity. Obviously, if you are the shy, intellectual type with a truckload of inner rage and a brain that no one appreciates or understands, then this is your bible. Women Subgenii take note: there's a chapter devoted just to you. Enjoy one of the last decades' coolest in-jokes.

Revelation Indeed
Bob has kept the secret well hidden, however there are those of us who have come to figure it out for ourselves. Prior to the New Testament, the Koran, the Book of Ulvolva (ancient text of Atlantis), the Book of Zen, the Zoroastrian Scripture, the Talba, the Tonka, the Willy Wonka, and the Sears Roebuck catalog-- we have, written in the time of Ancient Maldaistheregasinthecar (formerly Rowwanda East of Gucci), a holy text. If you have mastered the Tao of Jeet Condo, then perhaps you are ready for the Apocryphon.

Bob has encrypted the actual 'date of text.' In fact, within the Apocryphon are the architectural plans to the Ark of Noah, the Leaning Tower of Pizza (hold the anchovies), the Great Wall of China, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, and the electrical schematics for the Univac, the Cadillac, and the Rayovac--- all encrypted. Not to mention a fascinating 'Table of Elements' containing over 92 undiscovered elements and a killer Betty Cronkyte chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Bob knows, and perhaps with some basic instruction and years of grueling practice, you too could know. Keep in mind that the Apocryphon doubles as both a CPRRPMWPM and an MFCCOICSOIC manual. Having the knowledge, as Bob warns, is half the battle. Knowing just what to do with having the knowing of every aspect of everything and everything in-between everything in and of itself is besides the point. However, despite these dichotomic delemmic conundrums one must insist the practice itself is beyond the ability of even the most skilled novice. Therefore Bob suggests that perhaps the reading of the Apocryphon backward could produce more or less understanding of the meaninglessness of the attempt not to do so.

Using the Apocryphon I have gained enlightenment and understand that, had I not pursued these truths, I would have undoubtedly overcome. Thank you Bob for being there, even when I did not need you, and thank you also for your wisdom and arrogance.

Allegory of the "Bob"
"Something for NOTHING It Can All Be Yours Everything You Know Is TRUE "Bob IS THE PROOF" (Page ii) Throughout Revelation X I came across statements which at first glance might seem silly or nonsensical, and yet upon further inspection came across as bearing a kernal of truth. As for the quote above, in the context of the two nearby pictures of brains, one labeled "before" and healthy, and a second labeled "after" where the cerebral cortex has shrunk and become disfigured, it is a damning critique of the cult follower mentality, whereby one is crippled by the presumption of obtained truth, rather than continually searching for more truth. The "Bob is Proof" refers to the circular reasoning integral in the matinence of this veneer of possessing truth, observable in the fundamentalist who quotes his scriptures to say that his God exists because God revealed the scripture saying that he exists. Revelation X has the distinguishing feature of being hilarious while at the same time incisive, in fact, in some places brilliant when it comes to analyzing religion (especially Scientology) and popular culture, such that I am left wondering where to begin. One section I loved had to do with the nature of Revelation X and the Church: "The Church of Subgenius: Salvation, or Salivation? A joke disguised as a religion? Or an actual, secretive religion, disguised as a joke disguised as a religion? Or, an incredibly complex joke, disguised as an extremely ambiguous religion, disguised as a joke disguised as a religion? Just another excuse for obnoxious jerks, or the last bastion of human dignity? " (xiv) It goes on to ask the same questions of other religions: "Drugged by childish superstitions and fairy tales, they don't realize that they are enslaved by shadows on the cave walls. We were the ones who MADE those shadows in the first place, but try telling them that! Now they want to subject us to the mass hallucinations we first set in motion!" (xiv) By alluding to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," it reminds me of the circumstances chaining people to the conclusions they were to make about their place in the universe in past historical epochs. It does seem like a joke to think that people would engage in human sacrifice to make sure that "the sun wouldn't burn out"...when we obviously see that the sun, controlled by the natural process of fusion, isn't going to burn out if we don't rip a few hearts out, that Allah/Yahweh isn't going to send fire and brimstone on us if we view gays and lesbians as fellow human beings. Well, some of us, that is. But hey, no prob according to "Bob"- "Think Stupidly. Act Globally." (3) Another insight I derived from Revelation X was a further understanding of the noncognitivist position, namely, that God does exist is not a statement or proposition that can be said to be true or false in the same way that "That chair is grey" can be said to be true or false. While I don't think that Revelation X is explicitly advocating that position, it uses language in such a way as to expose the gibberish that can surround any "statement" dealing with God, or the ethereal "holiness" or "grace" refered to as "slack." To name but a few: "God is everywhere...but "Bob" has already been...everywhere else...."'Bob' is the rabbit, and he is the magic hat, and he is the trapdoor on the tabletop....'Bob' is the Daisy Air Rifle, he is the 'B-B,' and he is the eyepatch on your little brother....'Bob' is the gas and he is the engine. And he is the oncoming out-of-control Mack truck on the wrong side of the road with the driver asleep at the wheel, and he is the pill which that driver took. AND 'BOB"S' YOUR UNCLE!" (4)[God is omnipresent. This bread and wine are the body of God. And God's your Father!- Ill-defined relationship between God and the universe?] "Dobbs ["Bob"] exists in the eye of an acausal "hurricane," a quantum storm generating enough Slackforce to coerce the odds and variances, the very physical laws of our Universe, into giving him exactly what he wants and needs from moment to moment. Dobbs never has to compromise his desires in any way; instead, the Universe must rearrange itself, and somtimes perform remarkable feats of acausality, in order to accommodate Dobbs." (5) [Cf. Aquinas, Unmoved Mover, etc.] I guess I do know how to end, however, as I feel I would otherwise quote the whole book. In the first chapter, it brings up the question of how much sense it makes for someone to say that God is loving, or angry, or has "concern" for the welfare of human beings: "Human anguish is a very high-priced drug among the Elder Gods. They will pay top dollar for the right quality of bottled torment, accumulated over a lifetime and pent up in the soul. They 'inject' that poisoned soul in highly concentrated doses, causing spasms of indescribable alien ecstasy...." (12) What would cause divine pleasure- and how do we know it would be human salvation?

Great Story! I see God's leading in his life.
The stories about the history, his family and the Indians around his life gave me a new perspective about this time in history. Ivan, an engineer, has told a story in this book about his experiences and involvement in the transformation of our nation from the 'old west' to the modern technological age. I have always been in awe of people who have had challenging life experiences. It was fun to read this book and see how all these experiences have shown God's leading in Ivan's life.

Excellent Oklahoma family history
Ivan Allen is my uncle. (my mothers brother) I was very happy that he wrote this book because it brought back many memories dating back to when I would visit my grandparents farm in Sumner, Oklahoma. When I saw the photographs of my grandparents, (uncle Ivans parents) and his children and family, I got a very nostalgic feeling. Sumner, Oklahoma is a simple, hard working farm community in northern Oklahoma and when I read Uncle Ivans book, it brings back a lot of good memories which I will never forget that I had as a child growing up. The old wooden raft (a very heavy wooden raft it is!), is still located somewhere in Sumner, Oklahoma, probably sitting in the corner of a farm pasture near the Allen homestead. I would like to find that old raft and let Uncle Ivan know where it is located and possibly even buy it and give it back to him.. Ivan Allen is a fine christian man with high morals and dignity and I respect him very much. I only wish that I lived closer to him so that he and I could talk about the old homestead and listen to some more of his early childhood experiences at Sumner, Oklahoma. I highly suggest reading his book "Bad Times and Then There Was God" because it will enlighten you on the early times of northern Oklahoma history with sad, serious and funny stories of the past. Its great!

An excellent read. I could not put it down.
Ivan Allen is a personal friend of mine. He and I have known each other for about one year. After reading his book, I feel honored to know him more and make the most of every opportunity to talk to him. The stories and adventures that Ivan relates in his book are very compelling and exciting. My children regard his experiences as many do Laura Ingalls Wilder in her famous biographical stories.

Who is this Bruce Campbell guy?
Bruce Campbell is a born story-teller. (Since it's Memorial Day weekend, I'll reach for a questionable b-b-q simile here:) Like a master of the grill, he knows just how to trim the fat from his stories and season them with just the right amounts of insite & humor to leave his readers' story-hungry mouths watering. Just open this book to any page, read one or two of the humorous anecdotes, and you'll be hooked--even if you haven't seen the "Evil Dead" movies 100 times apiece, or even if--God forbid--you don't know who in the heck Bruce Campbell is.

In his much-too-late debut, "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor," Bruce spins together a loose but always compelling narrative detailing his long journey through the jungle and many outlying swamps of show business. Bruce describes how he hit the "big time" in high-school-pal-turned-cult-horror-film-director Sam Raimi's low budget phenomenon "Evil Dead".

He tells about how he came to land roles in tv's "Hercules" and "Xena: Warrior Princess." Bruce has been in many a bad movie along the way, but he's come through it all with his humor and sense of priority refreshingly intact.

This is a great book for fans of Bruce, but I also recommend it to anyone who gets a kick out of Hollywood, or just anyone who enjoys a well-told story. I found myself repeatedly quoting bits and pieces of this book to friends as I was reading it. If you're looking for a book to bring along to the pool this summer, this is it.

Rare glimpse into Hollywood
I read this over the course of a couple of days. Very fast read. Being a fan of Bruce Campbell's work I really enjoyed the behind the scenes info and insights to some of my favorite movies. More importantly this book confirmed something I think we all suspected was that the Hollywood system stinks. Bruce Campbell has shown that if you are willing to sacrifice everything for something you enjoy you can make it in the business and not be an A list celebrity. He's a regular schmoe like the rest of us who has done really well at something he enjoyed doing. Don't we all wish we could be so lucky. My only complaint with this book was that the final chapters seem to be thin and rushed. If these chapters could be fleshed out like the earlier sections it would be an even better read. I still loved it and look forward to reading it again. Who needs A&E for a great biography? Read this book!

If Chins Could Kill
First off, I am not a gigantic Bruce fan! I am just a guy who likes his movies. To me they seem like some sort of stress reducer, to wear off the tension and stress of the day. His book however is surely the best (auto)biography I have ever read. I have read many biographys, and they include "A Beautiful Mind", a three star book, and some book made by a [person who did not know anything]about MAD Magazine. This is a funny entertaining book that kept me enthralled.

For those of you who don't know, Bruce Campbell is a B Movie (Low budget, Super-8 films)actor who has had mega sucess as the hero Ash in the Evil Dead films. In the begining of the book he talks about his childhood (most all bios do that but this one was hilarious), his minor sucess in Super-8 films, his other minor sucesses in the Evil Dead films, and hit and miss performances in a A movie world.

He also landed roles on Hercules and Xena from time to time, also he directed Herc episodes too. You see, in his own words, "This is not a memoir about what I said to So-And-So at the Beverly Hills hotel. It's also not about an actors "meteoric" rise or tragic fall..."

It's just a walk into Bruce Campbell's life.

Memorable Quote: Do you want to be famous, or do you want to be an actor? They are two completly different things.

Now "Masters of Networking," to which I'm proud to have been a contributor, gives you both the motivation and the how-to for becoming a master networker yourself. Read this book and use the principles that have made so many of its contributors so successful and you'll find yourself achieving your most important goals. Networking in Many Different Areas of Life
The Masters of Networking book was a great read because it had lots of articles that pertained to people in all walks of life. I enjoyed the articles on networking to adopt children, mothers networking, the networking habits of children as well as the articles about traditional business networking.

The variety of writing styles and points of view made this an interesting and entertaining read. Also, being a busy professional, I liked the short articles so I could pick the book up and read a little.

I would highly recommend this book for business professionals and those looking to build support in their life.
