The Adventures of Snowwoman
Children on Christmas Eve wrote a note to Santa Claus and built a snowwoman to carry the note to him. The snowwoman rushed to get it to him, but got lost and fell apart. Animals helped put her back together. This is an excellent animal adventure story with color illustrations. Recommended for students from the K through 4th grade.

KINDNESS IS THE KEY
My Mother read me this story around the age of 5 and after just one reading I was hooked. I requested she read it to me nightly for a long time! My Mother did the voices of the characters so great! As I got older, I read it on my own and I wore out the story, reading it countless times. As an adult, I still love the story because it is magical, suspenseful and just a little bit scary but not too much for a child.

This is a wonderful story with many morals. It TEACHES a child RESPECT for elders (definitely always an issue in the world today) and when unsure what to do, to go GET ADVICE FROM SOMEONE YOU TRUST before acting and to LISTEN to that wise advice VERY CAREFULLY. This book teaches a child to be COURAGEOUS and use wise advice along with her WITS, INSTINCTS and HEART to get out of perilous situations.

The Russian illustrations are very different than a typical American book; which I find very refreshing. It has vibrant primary colors and lots of black outlines to set the pictures off. Also the layout of pictures within the story is sheer genius.

The girl was badly mistreated by her stepmother but yet was kind and gentle, not letting it effect her personality. This is the moral from the book I appreciate the most. REMINDS ME OF A WISE SAYING:"YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE SITUATION BUT YOU CAN CONTROL HOW YOU REACT TO IT." Children should be taught this truth from birth!

This is a great book! I highly recommend it. You may have to settle for one of the books in print right now but this one is the classic one to me--if you can get it, I think you will be very pleased.

Story Time Book!
This is a wonderful book to use as a resource in a storytime setting. The pictures are bright and colorful. The story is easy for even preschool age children to follow along.
The ending is wonderful and a great lead in to a discussion on apples and worms.

Good read aloud for prek-second grade.
This book by Kayta Arnold is a book which lends itself to discussions on animals relationships to other animals. Will the puppy discover which animal says meow? Children will enjoy the animal sounds and the bright illustrations.

GREAT FUN
I first read this book to my two and a half year old son in the library. We both laughed so hard I was looking for the "shushing" librarian. I had fun because my son had fun. We both had SOOO much fun I had to go out and buy it so we can do it again whenever we want. I say do it again, because it is like a game you want to play over and over.

Good story, poor illustrations.
When an old couple feel bad that they have no child, they take a log, sing it lullabies and treat it like a baby. Then one morning, theywake to find that the log has magically turned into a boy. They raisethe boy as their son, and warn him about the dreaded Baba Yaga thatlives nearby. The boy is vigilant against her...This story is shortand easy to read, perhaps a little too short and easy for my sevenyear old reader, but a good story nonetheless. The unfortunate part ofthe book is the illustrations. The illustrator selected a 17th centurystyle for her pictures, but they came out looking a little tooprimitive, and my seven year old did not like them. A surprising errorwas that the narrative describes the Baba Yaga as flying on a mortarand pestle, whereas the illustrations show her flying on a broom. Thisis surprising considering that the illustrator and the author were oneand the same person.

Overall, despite my complaining, this is an OKbook, with a charming story. If you or your children enjoy Baba Yagastories, then this isn't a bad one to read.

baba Yaga is my favourite witch
If you are tired of witches on brooms, read Russian folk tales, where baba Yaga uses more imaginative means of transport, lives in a house on chicken legs etc... Good illustrations are necessary to properly enjoy the story.

the fool wins
This is a take off on the Ukranian~Russian folktale called 'Salt' in the Childcraft 1954 series. However, this tale about onions concentrates on greed as motivation for commerce. Salt begins with a ninny who doesn't want to work, and then the hero wants a good reputation and chooses wisdom and work. The funny ending of Onions induces the reader to laugh at another's misfortune. The images are graphic. Businessmen or merchants are modeled as people who shouldn't be kindhearted or generous. 2 stars because it is an okay read. I recommend the original 'Salt' which gets 5 stars with a real 'marries the princess and lives happily ever after' satisfying ending.
