129th Pennsylvania in disquise:
Reprint of an 1864 book detailing the service of the fictional 210th Pennsylvania, a nine-month regiment which charges on Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg and is heavily engaged at Chancellorsville just days before the expiration of their enlistment. Originally published anonymously under the guise of fiction, Mr. Arner's commentary demonstrates the connections to actual people and events in the 129th Pennsylvania (3rd Division, Fifth Corps). Offers a particularly interesting picture of the division commander, Andrew A. Humphreys.

I loved reading this book!
I just loved Sour Land! It was a nice break from all the sugar coated books that most kids read. Sure, the end is sad. But I think that is was the real world is like, full of disapointments, deaths, horible sicknesses, and whatever might come your way. So, reading this book might prepare kids for stuff that is going to get in there way of live one day. I have to tell you that I have always wanted to read a book that had a plot of an adult's book, but was writen for kids. I found that book, I read that book, and I loved that book!

Excellent account of love lost and reocvery.
I recieved this book from Mr. Armstrong after I lost my parents in a plane crash in 1988. I was one of his students at Kent School. This is an excellent account of losing a loved one and the depression that follows. Armstrong takes you through his heart breaking story of the death of his wife. He is left alone to raise their children. It tells of his depression and how he overcame the tragedy.

I thanked him for helping me through the hardest part of my life. It woke me from the depressive slumber and help pull me back to reallity. It is an excellent book for anyone who has suffered a loss.

The best book I've found on Parker yet
William Armstrong invested much time and energy into this book. Factual, including an outiline of Parkers life and accomplishments. Armstong includes many pictures and historical references. Highly recommended for anyone interested in New York State History or the Seneca Indians. Ely Parker rose above the prejudices of society and became a man of both worlds. Hurray for Armstrong, who has developed a book worthy of The Last Grand Sachem of the Iroquois.

It's been around for a while, but it's advice is timeless...
William Armstrong's small work is a great way for all life-long students to understand what it takes to streamline techniques for higher learning. Although many might fault the book for it's brevity and say that the author doesn't go into enough detail, I felt the author's advice was very pertinent, and very self-explanatory. His 50 year experience in teaching shines through with a gently guiding hand, placing the responsibility in the hands of each student. There are no tricks that are presented here, as indicated by the very name of the work. So, whether you're looking for ways to succeed in that upcoming course that's supposed to be tough or just trying to brush up on ways to maximize your efforts in a lifetime of learning, you're definitely on the right track, by reading this one.
One other thing to keep in mind, because the author wrote this work so long ago, it provides a great baseline in it's fundamental principles. I would also suggest Adam Robinson's "What Smart Students Know" to supplement the principles introduced in "Studying is Hard Work". Robinson's work has some more methodology and covers some more modern principles like memorization and the use of "hooks". Good luck in your learning!

This book should be required study
Sure wish I had known this book was available in our local library since 1957. I sure could have use it when I was in highschool in the 70s. Our schools' teachers should all read this and begin disseminating it to students beginning when they begin school.

Since most schools send out newsletters to parents/guardians of students the same book should be made known to them to read on their own with the notation that these principles will be what is presented to their children as guides to become the best student they can be. As parents are a child's first and best teacher, reading this book will prepare your child for school as you will likely begin to follow these principles and pass them on to your children without much effort.

Too many letters go out telling parents to become involved in their children's schooling...but the why and how isn't there. This book is the why and the how. I'll be writing a letter to the editor of our local weekly newspaper as well as to several other daily papers that our community subscribes to so that those wishing to improve their study skills will know they have a means to do so.

I doubt any other study books compare as this one has all that is necessary to make a person realize it is within oneself to get the job done. It is outlined...as some have reviewed otherwise, if you apply the study skills to the book itself the gems will leap out at you.

Still the best book on study skills
When I entered high school forty years ago, I was given this book, with the warning that school work was about to become less like play and more like adult work. This book helped me understand the difference between merely getting a job done and doing it well. It gave me the tools to study efficiently and to focus on the task at hand, abilities that have stood me in good stead ever since. But my response to one of the prior reviewers is this, gentle reader - the title says it all - there are no short cuts, cute tricks, diagrams. Life does not ever put the important stuff in bold print for you. Mr. Armstrong understood that studying is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. The book expresses the expectation that you, the student, must examine how you think and then develop your own discipline to learn how to learn.

Sounder
This childrens book by William Howard Armstrong digs into the life of a young black boy, his father and their dog, Sounder. It is set in the old south and details the struggles of an African American family of this time. The usual struggles for this family are getting food and staying warm until one terriable night that changes the family forever. The father is taken to jail and Sounder is wounded in the struggle. From that night on the boys life is faced with even more struggles to survive, as he is hoisted to the head of the house. He worries about his fathers well being, which sends him onn many adventures looking for him. Through all of the bad the boy does manage to find the good in all occasions.
This would be a great read for fourth to eighth grade students. It is a truthful and detailed insight into the history of the African-American race.

Sounder by Willian H, Armstrong
I read the book Sounder by William H. Armstrong. This novel is about a poor dad who has to steal to feed his family and he gets caught and sent to jail. It is also the story of the coon dog named Sounder who loves his master. This book takes place in the South a long time ago. It is about a poor family of farmers. The main theme is that the family must go on without the father and they are very poor. The father is sent to do hard labor and they don't know where he has been sent. The boy tries to find his dad for many years.

The boy is sad that his dad is in jail. He goes to town to bring him a cake. The jailers squish the cake. The dad says, "tell her not to send you no more". He doesn't want his boy to come and see him in jail because he doesn't want his son to see him in this environment.

The main characters are Sounder, a young boy, his mother and his father. Sounder is a dog. He is white with brown dots, and he is a coon dog. He is good at hunting. The boy is black. He is about11, and he likes to hunt with his dad. The dad is a farmer, until he goes to jail. The family is very poor. The dad works very hard to get food so that the family does not starve to death.

This book is a great book. The characters were very neat. It is a sad book. It is an adventure book. The part I like the best was when the boy and the dad go off hunting. It was funny when the dog was chasing the animals around. I also like when the boy brought the cake to his when it the cake to his dad when it was his birthday. The police smashed up the cake and the dad got only a little piece. The part did not like was when they were shooting the animals.

The ending was kind of sad. The dad has wanted to have a happy life when he was young. I think he should have tried to have a little fun before he died.

Sounder
I think the book, Sounder, by William H. Armstrong, was very good. The story is about a boy who has a dog named Sounder. The family is poor so the father must steal to feed his family. His father is taken to jail and Sounder tries to protect him but gets hurt. What I thought was interesting about this book is the story is based upon William Armstrong's teacher's life experience of this. I enjoyed the way it made me think about the story in different ways. I enjoyed the characters because they had distinct personalities. For instance, the boy was very determined to find his father, and the other characters thoughts and emotions were very well described. All of the story elements together helped me picture the story as if I had witnessed it. The setting was described in great detail just like the plot and the characters were also. It was amazing that everything about the book could seem so real. The thing I enjoyed most in the story was the way the dog's bark was described. It was described with beautifully written similes and metaphors to portray how it sounded. The dog, Sounder, was named for it's bark because people could hear the bark louder and richer than any other dog's bark. For all of these reasons I will highly recommend this book with five out of five stars. There were only two things in this story I did not like very much. One is the abruptness of the time periods. In one paragraph it went from seasons to years. Another is that not very much detail about the boy when he was searching for his father was given. Overall though, I felt this book was one that should be read more than once.

Great description of the Civil War U.S. Christian Commision
I read this book particularly to learn more about the United States Christian Commision which operated during the Civil War. The subject of the book, Edward Smith, was instramental in organizing and operating this orgnization in the western theater of the War. the Chrisian Commision provided material and spritural assistance to soldiers during the war. This included, reading and writing material, food and clothing, nursing of sick and wounded and providing spiritural support through christian tracts and church services. All of their assistance was provided free by volunteer "delegates". This publication devotes five chapters to Edward Smith's leadership in this significant organization.
