A wonderfull classic
I am a professor of Chemical Engineering with emphasis in chemical reactors and related subjects. I own this booh since 1977 (!) and it remains with me all the time. It is, for the time it was published, the best book ever written on Chemical Reactor Analysis. It has modeled the domain language, through its precision of definitions. It has also modeled the domain itself, through the precision of its mathematical language . I recommend it to every ungraduate and graduate student of Chemical Engineering.

This book is an excellent introduction to the area.
This book gives an amazing introduction to mathematical modelling techniques for engineers and scientists along with excellent useful tools for model development. Further, the appendices provide very illustrative example cases of the methods developed.

Good reference
This book would be good for a reference, however, I would not reccomend it for learning the subject or to supplement a course on fluid mechanics.

Primer
This book comes from the author who is influenced by Clifford Truesdell(pioneer of Rational Continuum Mechanics & Thermodynamics). This book can be a good introductory material to begin study in rational mechanics. However, not so serious students may find it disappointing. One can surely learn some good tensor manipulation skills with application to fluid mechanics.

Too good!
Well, I don't want to go into an endless list of superlatives which this book really deserves. I'd rather point out some of its features. It's terse, sometimes awfully so & therefore, this's not the best book to learn the "basics". Don't expect any elementary physics of fluid flow. I've only read the first half of the book and in those less-than-hundred pages, I've appreciated fluid mechanics much more than I've by any other means. However, I must say that the so-called "indices" notation for vectors and tensors can be extremely frustrating and even confusing. This notation is so extensively used in the book that it can become possibly the only reason to put the book down. The order of presentation is quite nice.

There are few problems to solve which mostly seem to fill in the details of presentation. The last chapter on mass transport is a disappointment, with nothing close to what one would expect in a book of this stature. It is however included only because "it would be unpardonable not to do so, for a book coming from Chemical Engineering dept".

The author says in his preface that the time has come to go beyond the notion that engineers don't need rigorous applied mathematics and he proves his point in every page of his book. It's a pleasure to read and work on, especially the second half of the book. With patience, paper and pencil (lots of them), one can gain a real mastery over the subject. A true graduate-level book!

Rutherford B. Hayes: Warrior and President

Best Hayes biography I know
Hayes had an interesting life and an active time in the Civil War. This book is aimed at presenting a favorable picture of him, and is written kind of like old-fashioned biographies. It pays excessive attention ro Hayes' diary, and contains considerable trivia. Some chapters are boring. The most interesting chapters are are, obviously, on 1876 and 1877 and the dramatic events around Hayes' election to the Presidency. And yes, the Republicans stole that election too!

Definitive look at Hayes
Hoogenboom has produced a readable and scholarly look at Rutherford B. Hayes. His research is able and exhaustive and there are few (if any) errors of fact here. It's interesting that he spends much time on Hayes' sometimes neglected civil war career, with interesting results. Hayes emerges as a fairly interesting, if not always sympathetic character and a man who was highly intelligent.

Hoogenboom also illuminates Hayes' happy marriage to Lucy, and the tragedies they endured while losing some of their children. He throws ample light on Hayes as a human being and as a man, as well as a soldier and eventually President.

I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Antebellum politics, Hayes or America in the late 19th century.

This book provides a new interpretation on Hayes.
This book is told from and unbiased standpoint. The author does an excellent job ofjust giving the facts and not letting his opinion or anyone else's get in the way. The best example of this is in the first two chapters which talks about his campaign and then the disputed election, where to sum it up quickly, Hayes did not have the popular majority and won by 1 electoral vote. The book supplies me quotes and historical references from both Republican and Democrats and then gets into of the details of the election. So before I know all the details I already have evidence from both sides. Once one gets to the details it is simply facts no opinions. Hoogenboom does an extraordinary job giving facts and references from the time period and making and unbiased point of view. That is tolled form all sides and does not just concentrate on Hayes' side. The book remarkably managed to take and unbiased stance and still attack the widely held belief that Hayes was and ineffective leader and an inept politician. The author bring an entire new perspective on how to view Hayes. According to the American Presidency Series this book is supposed to present historians and the general public with interesting, scholarly assessments of Hayes' administration. Yet I found this book to be geared to the historians and the scholarly. The book is obviously being written for someone with good amount of intelligence. After reading this book one gains an entire new respect for the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. END

One Good Soldier
This book is another well done look at Rutherford B. Hayes by Dr. Ari Hoogenboom. In this volume the author tells the story of Hayes' Civil War experiences.

Before joining up Hayes was not enthused about the War. But as a soldier he quickly became convinced of the value of his mission. By the end of 1861 he had come to see the war as "a crusade against slavery."

Hayes started out as a major in the 23rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He soon rose to colonel. By the end of the war he was a general. He served four years in all (1861-1865). Hayes last battle was in October, 1864. While still on active duty the voters of Cincinnati elected him to Congress.

Hayes' war action was mostly in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. William McKinley stated that when Hayes was in battle he was "intense and ferocious." He was wounded five times in action but maintained his enthusiasm for being a soldier. He proved himself a capable officer who earned the respect of his men. He often defeated the enemy and helped achieve ultimate Union victory.

Hayes had the luxury of seeing his family several times during the War. He wrote numerous letters home and kept a diary. These writings proved invaluable sources for this book.

This book provides numerous detailed maps of the battles which Hayes fought in. There are also several bios given of the various generals Hayes served under or against.

Dr. Hoogenboom clearly understood Rutherford B. Hayes and described him accurately. The reader gets a clear picture of the 19th President before he attained that office.
