Perfect for beginners
This won't teach you theory, or any 'real' songs, but it will show you the tools to play almost any song's chords. The method is easy, and teaches almost all the commonly used open position chords, bar chords, and slash chords. Easy to follow, with lots of practice rythmns. Not really a method book as much as a study guide and reference. This and the second book (_More Guitar chords and Accomp_) are almost exhaustive in covereage of open chords. After a couple weeks of this, you should be able to pick up almost any song and strum the chords. Also teaches finger-picking and arpeggios.

A straightforward manual for serious guitarists
Jazz guitar expert Yoichi Arakawa's More Jazz Guitar Chords And Accompaniment: A Complete And Comprehensive Guide To Advancing Your Jazz Guitar-Playing Sills is a very practical and straightforward manual for serious guitarists. The introduction teaches the beginning player about scale degrees and how to read a chord diagram, but the majority of the book focuses directly on the chord diagrams themselves, with both verbal and musical notation, from Major 6 and Minor 6 to Dominant 7#9. Drop Voicing, Comping, and Chord Synonyms and Substitutions are all covered in detail in this first rate guide for improving one's guitarl musical skills. Also highly recommended is Yoichi Arakawa's predecessor volume, Jazz Guitar Chords And Accompaniment (1891370073, [dollar amount]).

Actually there exists only one major pentatonic scale, and it is identical to the minor pentatonic scale. It can be transposed and played in various positions on the guitar fretboard; this book will show you how to do that. When you're ready to learn about other pentatonic scales, get hold of PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.
