The book caused a sensation when it was published and immediately catapulted Aquin into the ranks of the literary ey elite of Quebec. Published in 1969, this is Aquin's second novel; it was awarded the Governor General's Award in 1969, but Aquin refused this on political grounds. The novel's plot revolves around the murder by a French-Canadian pharmacist of his English-Canadian lover; the story is as a whole generally an analogy of English-French relations at the time.
