Cher Simply Cher by Linda Jacobs
Rare, made for children book with appropriate and excellent content to inspire the younger reader to achieve high ideals, set realistic goals with determination, and to believe that helping bring joy to others can bring quiet confidence & triumph to oneself. The pics are all B/W with several unusual ones from the 70's, mostly not often seen, candid & honest content, all in all a good book that stays on track though short--40 pages.

A Short But Sweet Look At The Life Of The 70's Pop Star
This book gives you a small glimpse of Elton John's career up to 1976. It is not a really long book, but it holds your interest. The complicated upbringing of Elton when he was known by his birth name Reginald Dwight. And how he struggled to be seen and heard by his stern father and schoolmates. How music became his salvation through this trying period, and his mother's encouragement to stick with pop music which Elton loved and felt he could best express himself, despite the objections of his father who demanded that he stick with the classics. Elton's tenure in the band Bluesology and how he took the names of two of it's leaders Elton Dean and Long John Baldry and made them his own. He even gave himself a new middle name: Hercules. His determination to write and perform his own songs, and how he found a kindred spirit in Lyricist Bernie Taupin. His debut at the club trubadour in Los Angeles in 1970, and his subsequent success with his self titled debut album, and all the success that followed after. I think that Elton would be happy that he followed his dream of music superstardom instead of following in his father's footsteps. Because of that, you're bound not to see a sign bearing the name Reginald Dwight and Co., which is what probably would have happened to him had he listened to his dad. We're the lucky ones because it didn't happen that way, and we would have missed out on a lot of great music if it had.

Parrots
Parrots are realy good pets because you could teach them to talk. You have to feed them seeds, such as sunflower and sesame seed. Soon you teach them to say little words like hello. Then they will be on your arm. When they learn to talk you will be making conversations with them. I will recommend this book to everyone I know.

Great Resource to discovering Texas
I found this book on a roadtrip to West Texas and it became an indespensible resource for discovering Texas. Not only did we find many side trips while in the Permian Basin of West Texas, it opened a new window into the Hill Country around Austin, we visited many places that we would never have known existed. A companion book on was an indespensible part of a recent road trip I took with my kids through Wyoming. You cannot say you truly know a place unless you own one of these books for the state in which you live. The books open a whole new world of weekend excursions to places and things odd, quirky, historic and wonderful. I highly recommend any in this series.

Tips on using this book in your classroom
I am a fourth grade teacher in California where the social studies curriculum centers on the study of California. I was attracted to the book because of its multicultural theme and beautiful illustrations. I used it as a read aloud in class with some heavily guided discussion where the book falls off. It needs some expansion on why these two girls and their families might have been seen as outsiders in the town. The solution seems to come a little too easily to these minority girls in an era where prejudice and discrimination ruled the mining towns. It did envoke a good discussion amongst my students about the likelihood of such a conclusion. The book did a good job of showing certain mining techniques and vocabulary which reinforces our curriculum nicely. I recommend using it class, but just steer the conversation towards the weaknesses in the book to be really effective.

GREAT
I was doing a term paper on the Black Death and happened to get this book at the local library. It helped out my project so greatly, I don't know what I would have done without it. If you need any information on the plague, or any other disease, i suggest you read PLAGUE AND PESTILENCE!
