An excellent reference for first-time CA buyers
If you've bought a house before, some parts of this book may seem somewhat elementary. And, admittedly, a lot of the information about how much you can afford is available on the web on various home-buying sites. On the other hand, I found the location-specific information very helpful, and the advice in the book is solid and reliable.

The real winners are those who are preparing to buy a house for the first time. This book will take you through pretty much all the steps, from thinking about what you want in a house and finding good neighborhoods, through figuring out how much you can afford. It's an excellent reference guide for somebody who's just starting to think about buying, and will be useful all the way through closing. IIf I had to choose just one book on buying a house, it would be this one.

As usual, the only book you'll need.
I used the Nolo Press tenants' rights book in the past to (successfully) sue my deposit-greedy/law-breaking landlords. I just used this book to buy my first home in the competitive Bay Area (yes, it's still highly competitive even in these "tough times"). Nolo's book is accurate and insightful, written in a voice that's accessible and, at times, fun and tongue-in-cheek. The organization of information, as usual, is right on. And the links and helpful sidebars are fantastic! Don't waste your money on other books. I swear this one is the only book you'll need.

Highly recommended - Nolo Press does it again
This book was recommended to us by a friend who bought a home in California. Since then, we've bought it for other friends and family. Nolo Press publishes excellent books, and this is no exception. If you only read one book on buying a home (in California), this should be it.

Every dog owner and neighbor should read this
If you are thinking about buying a dog (it explains puppy mills, contracts to consider when you buy a dog and licensing laws); you already have a dog (laws you might want to consider even if you're sure your dog is always well-behaved and how to get dog insurance); you want to provide for your dog after your death (what may or may not work in your will); you hate your neighbor's dog's barking (how to talk to your neighbor or seek mediation, or your liability if you are cruel or provoke the dog) or if you suspect your neighbor's dog is mistreated or are in any other way concerned about dogs: YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. There is much more covered than what I have put here.

I expected to read a few key chapters, but ended up reading it cover to cover. It contains interesting facts throughout (have you ever thought about the number of dogs injured/killed by riding in the back of a pick-up truck?), history of dog laws, real cases and the rulings in those cases (though obviously missing the recent case of Ms. Whipple's murder); and sound, common-sense advice whether it is written in the law or not.

For the sake of the dogs and the people who own or are around them, I hope everybody will read this book.

For anyone who might have a legal bone to pick
Now in a revised and updated 4th edition, Dog Law is a straightforward and comprehensive legal guide for dog owners -- and the neighbors of dog owners. Dog Law explains, in plan English terms easily accessible to the lay person, what the laws mandates with regard to barking dogs, dangerous dogs, cruelty to animals, dog bites, if a dog is injured or killed, and much more. Dog Law is a superbly presented, user friendly reference, and a "must" for dog owners, as well as for anyone else who might have a legal bone to pick!

An excellent source of legal information for dog owners!
I bought this book (Dog Law) years ago since I am a dog owner who would like to be aware of my rights and the rights of my dogs. Dog Law, By Mary Randolph is now in it's third publication, and I highly recommend it to all dog owners. Not only does the author focus on simple leash laws, barking cases, landlord restrictions, traveling with your dog, etc., but the author also focuses on criminal abuse cases and acts as a referral contact if you need help in the legal process yourself with a dog legal situation.

A simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide
Now in its tenth edition, Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law by attorneys Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind is a simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide to the extremely complicated and tricky topic of doing legal research. Individual chapters address how to properly frame questions in legal categories and efficiently look up relevant laws and case history. Legal Research is emphatically not a substitute for a consultation with an attorney; however, a close reading followed by judicious use of its fact-finding methods is a superbly effective way for non-specialist general readers to prepare themselves before sitting down with a billed-by-the-hour consultation with a licensed attorney or paralegal researcher!

One of the best available
If you have a modicum of introduction to the law, and need a guidebook on "how to" go about researching a legal question, this book is one of the best available. It does assume that you have some working knowledge of how law works, but is an especially good book for either first year law students or paralegal students beyond their introductory courses. Well worth having on your shelf.

Minor Correction To Review of Martin Diosdado
I made a Minor Error....Section 18-9-111 of The Colorado Revised Statutes is a Class III Misdemeanor. By "Practice" alone, you will not be allowed access to a Court-Appointed Attorney or a Public Defender. By "Practice" alone you will be forced to complain to your District Attorney by means of "The Barker Test" about your lack of a Speedy Trial without using Profane or Vulgar Language - and about the D.A.'s not inforcing your State of Colorqado and The U.S. Constituttion's requierment to your being furnished a Court Appointed Attorney when you cannot purchase one. Don't forget to "Stand Mute" at any Arraignmment" that in the "Street Jargon" the Court of Colorado uses in calling your Arraignment a "First Appearance". After all, how can you enter a Plea of any kind withour your Contitutional Right to the Protection of a Defence Attorney? Don't forget to ask your Deputy D.A. for his/her business card so you can write the same "Barker Test" each week...to remind them that they went to a Law School of some kind, and are thought to be, by many, the Premier in Educated Minds in North America!

Once you are done with "The Barker Test" and have somehow acquiered a Public Defender, to write the Defender that you will have Letters of Memorandum to remind this Defender of what was said. Note that no one writes notes of conversations any more, and your Defender will need all the help you can give them! Please do not use much in the way of Latin Phrases, as this may scare the Defender into a Default or Reset mode....

Once you realize that you can do this as well as any attorney, be very afraid as your do "Discovery" from the D.A.'s office to find out what they have. Many Defenders are very busy

Eenie Meenie Miney Math
I agree this book is so outstanding that it is a crying shame that it is no longer published. This is a small paperback filled with colorful, amusing, illustrations and loaded with wonderful and easily implemented math/play ideas for the preschool crowd. It is useful for parents who want to explore the world of math together with their child and have one whale of a good time doing it. It is a wonderful resource for preschool teachers and can be easily adapted to Kindergarten and First Grade Math Curriculum. Anyone who is familiar with the work of Jean Piaget will treasure this book.

A crying shame that these are no longer printed!
This whole series is so good! Great illustrations and each page chock full of ideas to teach your child in any setting. I play some of these games with my son while we are driving down the road, in the grocery store, at bathtime, etc. Wonderful and fun ideas for even the busiest parents. These authors really know what works with preschoolers!

California Landlord Law Book: Rights & Responsibilities
Hardcopy book is excellent and a must especially for people with only one or two properties. I would expect that most professional landlords would know most of the information.

Guides you through the process
When we moved to a new home, we decided not to sell our old one but rent it out instead. However, we've heard a lot of nightmare stories about being a landlord, so the idea was pretty scary even though it makes sense for the long-term financially. This book gives you great advice and even examples of doing things the right way and the wrong way. I certainly had a lot of misconceptions about what was legal and what was not, and I think it would even be helpful even if one decided to hire a property management service just to understand liabilities. After reading this book, I feel comfortable that we've done everything in a legally correct way, and that we did a good job of screening our tenants. The forms provided give you everything you need to start renting out a place.

A must if you want to avoid a money sucking lawyer
I recently became a guardian of my young nephew but could not afford and didn't want to deal with a lawyer. This book made it possible. It layed out the steps in a well structured manner. I was very satisfied with my purchase. The forms it included with the book were just great. Buy it.

Excellent resource, whether or not you will use an attorney!
As an attorney who regularly represents clients in guardianship proceedings, I strongly recommend that my clients read The Guardianship Book so that they understand the sometimes confusing process. In some cases, I hand the book to my clients during our first meeting, as "homework" to read before I will prepare and file a petition. For those who cannot afford an attorney, I recommend this as a resource that will save considerable time and avoid court hearing delays. For clients who can afford to pay my fees, the book still saves my time explaining many issues -- the $25 book can easily save $250 in attorney fees. (Mark J. Welch, Pleasanton, CA)

This one will make you smile :)
Just a sentence or two a day. Inspiring, easy reading with delightful illustrations that will make it hard for you to resist smiling and be happy just discovering your self-worth all over again. And if you feel like it, you can color the illustrations, too!

A fine book for a 'low' day.
One in a series of 'elfin' books that does one's spirit good. It's just the right size to put in a pocket - a big plus. Just open it at any page and read the thought and look at the adjoining picture and it helps to lighten the moment. Well worth the price.

Excellent
I bought several landlord's rights books and found that this book was really helpful and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book if you're a landlord in need of legal advice to protect your property.

INDISPENSABLE!
This is a major component of my landlord/property manager library. I was not surprised to find, when I purchased this recent updated edition, that it is even better! (I noticed more excerpts of code.) Nolo Press has a deserved reputation for offering excellent legal guides for the lay person

A GOOD BOOK TO HAVE
This book reflects upon various issues which affect the African American parental experience. Even though it brings light to the everyday subjects that are discussed in most parental books, it takes the same approach as Dr. Spock's baby & childcare books. The authors of this book are very knowledgeable professionals. This is a good book to have in your parenting collection.

Mother Love

Excellent!
Dr. Anne Beal is my 9 month old son's pediatrician. She is fabulous! She is not only knowledgeable, but very compassionate. I am a white woman. My husband and son are both white. Although, this book is titled "The Black Parenting Book", it is an excellent guide for all parents. I purchased the book mainly because Dr. Beal is our pediatrician, but I find myself using it for reference quite often. I can't stress enough how wonderful Dr. Beal is as a doctor and how well-written and helpful this book is.

Written with our cultural dynamics in mind...
I'm the mother of a 2-year-old, and although the other books on the market had info, it didn't address my concerns about explaining racism, different hair textures, and other things that affect Blacks uniquely and color our view of the world. It has a caring, authoritative tone that's never condescending, and touches on most modern issues. Although I wish it had discussed other issues,(i.e.,the "raise-the-daughters-and-spoil-the-sons" phenomenon that occurs in our community all too often), it answered more of my questions that I thought possible from one source. If you are a first-time parent, or if you're feeling "rusty", this book is the answer. If knowledge is power, then this book is the ATOMIC BOMB!!!
