A compelling, true-life account
Jim's Journey: A Wake Island Civilian POW's Story is the compelling, true-life account of James A. Allen and his survival of 1,354 days of imprisonment as a civilian prisoner of war after being captured by the Imperial Japanese navy in December 1941 when the Marine garrison on Wake Island was finally overwhelmed. Jim was held in Japanese POW camps in China, Korea, and Japan. In addition to his eye-witness account of life as a POW, Jim's Journey also relates what happened to him when he was finally liberated and returned to America. It would be thirty-seven years before the U.S. government would official recognize that Jim and other eligible civilian POWs for their contributions to the dramatic defense of Wake Island against insurmountable hostile forces. Jim's Journey is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the history of POW experiences arising from World War II in the Pacific Theater.
This "Journey" is an inspiration!
This is the story of a civilian POW contracted to help build a naval air base on Wake Island shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is a thoroughly researched and compelling account of a young man whose early life and influences shaped him in ways that would only be beneficial to his efforts to survive terrible hardhips later. After playing a vital role as a civilian defender of Wake Island, Jim spent more than four years in various POW camps. On many occasions, he was a hairs breadth away from death, but his persistent courage and ingenuity sustained him. He used his intuitive understanding of Japanese culture to outwit the enemy in ways that required them to see things his way and thus spare his life. Japanese pride dictated that they give in to prisoners' demands at times in order to "save face". Jim's keen intelligence and resourcefulness kept him alert at all times as he constantly sought ways to help himself and his fellow prisoners to stay alive.
This book is a remarkable memoir, vivid and graphic, sometimes uncomfortably so, in its portrayal of the horrific experiences of the POWs and their unflinching will to survive. It is a living testimony to the freedom of the American spirit and should inspire great respect for all those men, whether military or civilian, who did not shrink from the responsibility of defending this country in a dark time of history. Some of these heroes, like Jim, were fortunate enough to live to tell us about it.

What a true patriot is all about!
God Bless Jim and all his Wake Island buddies. There is a place already set aside in heaven for all of you.

Brillant!
The Legend of the Whistle Pig Wrangler, written by Kate Allen is a wonderful, exciting, enjoyable book that no household should go without. I have enjoyed this book for 2 years now. It has an amazing plot with wonderful illustrations. This book is a must have.
The Legend of the Whistle Pig Wrangler
This cute story about a whistle pig (marmot) wrangler with a big smile and the talent to whistle "tickles" your heart. The illustrations are fantastic and are what drew me to the book originally. The brilliance of the picture detail make the character's eyes look real and the story come to life. There is even a illustrative spoof on a Dolittle painting. The glossary of cowboy lingo was quite helpful while my daughter was reading the story to me. Your childen will enjoy having this book as a part of their book collection - it won't stay on the shelf!

Very cute
My little girl loves this book! This book features Cookie Monster as he prepares for a dinner party for some of his friends. The story is told in rhyme and it's full of pictures of Sesame Street characters. There are a few "interactive" parts whre Cookie Monster addresses the reader. This is destined to become a quick favorite.

Money Management for Kids
If you are looking to have devotions at home, but do not know where to begin, stop looking. This book and the entire series are excellent. They teach biblical values through hands on expereince. As a pastor of a church, I am recommending this series to all members who have children. You do not need to know theology or know how to teach, just have a desire to set aside time one night per week and enjoy time teaching, learning and growing with your kids in a Christ centered fun way.

Highly recommended for baseball fans & sports history buffs.
No-Hitters: The 225 Games, 1893-1999 discusses each no-hitter baseball game, including a brief profile and career record of each pitcher. Each game is recapped, with details on what happened to that batter. A box score for each game is also featured, as is a photo of almost every no-hit pitcher. No-Hitters is enhanced for the baseball enthusiast with appendices that list no-hitters in which more than one pitcher participated; complete game no-hitters of less than nine innings; and no-hitters pitched before 1893 (when the mound was only 50 feet from home plate). An informative foreword by Jim Bunning (who pitched two no-hitters and one of the only eleven perfect games in baseball history) is a true informational treasure for the baseball fan. No-Hitters is a highly recommended addition to personal, school, sports bar, and community library baseball reference book collections.

An essential reference for electronics Mfg/Engr/QA folks!
The authors have used real-world measures of quality (=dependability) to define a strategy for improving the TRUE QUALITY of manufacturing output for electronic products and sub-assemblies. If you're involved in electronic design and manufacturing (as I am), chances are your present employer is doing many costly things in the name of Quality that you KNOW are counterproductive.
This gem of a book points out a lot of these practices, and provides OBJECTIVE EVIDENCE about how they're bad and why we do them anyway. And if you're like me, this book will also point out a few things you DIDN'T KNOW where counterproductive, too.
Reading and studying this book has made me DETERMINED to fight the forces of pseudo-quality that are a growing menace within the company I work for. Wish me luck!
