Groucho...no difference between letters and screen.
What better way to judge a man than to see his unedited, straight from the hip letters to his daughter. I have read just about all there is to read on Groucho, but this is my most prized possession. This book shows Groucho's philosophies on family relations, government, love and home life. I felt like a fly on the wall of a private phone conversation. The letters revealed a man who had a heart of gold and a tongue of silver. I was amazed at how his wit in letters was no different from that on the screen. Big thanks to Miriam for letting us look at the private side of one of the funniest men ever.

It made me laugh, it made me cry, but it also made me think!
These letters show a very human side of Groucho Marx. Through all this you get to experience first hand his great wit and sense of word play. There were many dimensions to this man, and these letters provide an inside look at what made this man tick. Many thanks should be given to his daughter Miriam for this personal look into her father's life.

One of the best collections in a long time
Dick Allen is a word master, a poet whose work should be required reading by all poets, all Americans, all world citizens, and by anyone interested in life, language, and literature. Not only is this book physically beautiful, but the poems are wonderful. There is kindness, depth, awe, humor, and such a wide-ranging sensibility in Allen's poems that this book, although seeped in the modern (computers and all) will be timeless. Highly recommended.

Ode to the Cold War: Poems New and Selected

A Stunning Collection
Allen's poetry is careful, accessible, and beautiful. His poetry has regularly graced The Best American Poetry series as well as many literary magazines. If you only buy one poetry book this year, this should be it. If you like the work of Billy Collins, Philip Levine, or Jim Daniels, buy this book; Allen's poetry is significantly different (as it should be), but in the same realm as their work.

Improved my most recent batch
I found Fal and Dick's book to be one of the most useful of the Classic Beer Style series. It had the right balance of technical and historical information. I found the discussion of fermentation of BW to be helpful addressing the longer duration and the issues concerning attenuation of such a high gravity beer.

Interesting, thorough, and practical.
The quality of the most recent addition to the Classic Beer Style series should not be a surprise. Allen and Cantwell discuss the history of Barley Wine, from Bass No. 1, to the modern brews of the American Micros. Barley Wine discusses the unique problems, and solutions, in brewing high gravity beers, and includes 11 (mostly) all grain recipes. The approach is thorough, but practical, and does not dwell on scientific technical minutiae. Also included is a section with details of the ingredients and brewing processes used in 20 commercially produced Barley Wines. This book will allow you to approach your next batch of Barley Wine with confidence.

Entertaining and enlightening reading for baseballs fans
Being an avid Dick Allen fan in the 60's and 70's, I thought I was the expert on this great slugger. "Crash" showed me how little I really knew about this warm and introspective man. The book is a real "page turner", discussing Allen's athletic exploits as a youth and throughout his exciting and turbulent career. As one would expect, many entertaining baseball stories and behind-the-scenes anecdotes are contained in these pages. But probably the most important and engrossing feature of "Crash" is the portrait it paints of the climate of race relations in the '60's, both in baseball and society. Readers who remember Allen's days in Philadelphia will truly gain a new enlightened perspective of this athlete and his career, a view which often contradicts the media reports and stories which circulated at that time. "Crash" is enjoyable reading for the baseball fan, but could also be of merit in the classroom.

Getting to the Facts
I'm not much of a reader for books. Yet, I'm compelled to read the book "Crash" over and over again. Everytime I read this book, I gain a new perspective. I just can't put it down. Whether I'm bored, angry, or tired, I always read this book. I'm 30 years old and I first bought this book in 1991. Since then I have lost this book many of times only for me to buy it many more times. The biggest lesson I have learned from this book is don't let anyone tell you what the facts are until you know for yourself.

Good Catalogue of flies
This book contains good photographs of many different kinds of flies, dries, nymphs, terrestials etc, and the recipe for tying them. Many of these flies are good for warm water species too. This is not a book on how to tie flies but the instructions will give a reasonably experienced tier enough information to produce the fly. Be aware that some early editions of the book are missing one chapter and part of 2 others (pages 49 through 64). Buy only later editions and printings. Used copies should be suspect.

Good range of patterns
This book brings you an excellent variety of patterns of all types. Well organized and well illustrated. Worth it!

Flys for Trout
This has been one of my key references in tying flys for my fishing in Michigan and Colorado. The instructions are clear, and color photos are excellent. I particularily liked the variety of patterns.

Great overview of Clinical Dermatology
I enjoyed reading this book as a layperson, not having gone to medical school. I have a number of minor skin problems and this book allowed me to differentiate the insignificant ones from the ones I need to pay attention to. I think that this book should be in every household, because a person or parent should know what skin affliction(s) they have and how serious they are before they rush off to the doctor. One thing that should have been elaborated on more is the sub-section on The Nails as Clues to Multiorgan Disease. There are only a few pages of examples of this, yet there are dozens of correlations between abnormal fingernails and systemic disease. The book only gives blantant and graphic examples of serious nail problems and then gives the possible associated underlying disease. It should be expanded to include more "soft sign" nail problems to help doctors make educated guesses about what tests to run.

Informative and Entertaining
I found this book very informative and infact, the actual photos provide a very clear understanding of the disease or infection. This book contains information that anyone who would want to go into dermatology should know. Ranging from the Rocky Mountain spotted fever to the "hairy tongue", this book provides a broad range of symptoms in a way that is not hard to understand. My fourteen year old daugter, who is a sophmore in highschool, loves this book and says that it has sparked her interest in the medical feild. This book is a must!

WELL-RESEARCHED, WELL-DOCUMENTED
Shinning like a king's armour, the colours and synopses of this atlas made a thorough analysis of skin diseases.
Any medical student or practioner who needs a dermatological companion would find a reliable one in this atlas. The uncountable pictures, which featured in this new edition are both illustrative and descriptive. Everything about the book indicates sound research and documentation, (on the part of its authors). It is a superlative tool for both doctors and students: the type of book many people would like to keep as CD-ROMs.

good intro to special teams
This book is a very good introduction to special teams from both a team and individual perspective. Allen was one of the first coaches to commit equal time to the practicing and coaching of special teams. Although the book covers most evryhting in great detail, it can be very elementary at times. Most good special teams units employ a multiple approach just like the offense and defense. There are shortcomings in this area but, with a little imagination, you should be able to add to the base of knowledge given here.

Great for the novice or expert coach
George Allen gives an indepth look at all phases of the kicking and punting game. Full of different coaching points, schemes, ideas, and scouting charts. Very helpful for new ideas or to strengthen your current beliefs.
