Be thou a man
Saul Alinsky was a complex and colorful man of great integrity and a civic activist with world-wide influence. Dedicated to empowering the politically weak and unorganized, Alinsky is rightly credited as the founder of community self-help. In this highly readable account, we come to appreciate Alinsky's empathic genius and his flair for showmanship. He had an uncanny personal gift for discerning which acts of protest would get attention and results, as well as an ability to teach others some of the tricks of the trade. Of all the anecdotes in the book, perhaps the most memorable concerns the time that young Alinsky was hauled before his rabbi for socking a kid who had beat up his own best friend. Alinsky excuses his behavior as "eye for an eye", and part of the "American way". His rabbi's answer is memorable. "You think you're a man because you do what everyone else does. Now I want to tell you something the great Rabbi Hillel said: 'Where there are no men, be thou a man.' I want you to remember that." And Alinsky did.

"Be Thou a Man"
Saul Alinsky, a complex and colorful man of great integrity and a civic activist with world-wide influence, deserves more than one biography. More than any other person, Alinsky was dedicated to empowering others and is rightly credited as the founding father of community self-help. In this highly readable account, we come to appreciate Alinsky's empathic genius and his flair for showmanship. He had an uncanny personal gift for discerning which acts of protest would get attention and results, as well as an ability to teach others some of the tricks of the trade. Now I want to tell you something the great Rabbi Hillel said: 'Where there are no men, be thou a man.' I want you to remember that.'" And Alinsky did.

Alinsky broke ground....
....against the square establishment of his day. He was the first, for instance, to initiate shareholder protests -- which went on to be a significant influence on corporate change within the system. This book is an autobiography/manifesto, in which Alinsky's voice comes through terrifically strongly. If you like his personality, you'll like this book; it's abrasive, matter-of-fact, and very funny. ("Look, God, you're God," he imagines Moses saying at one point. "There's nothing I can do to you. But do you REALLY want me going back to the people and telling them you're not worth the stone you're printed on?") Reading this made me wish I could have known him.

Smashing the status quo!
Mr. Alinsky captures the outrage organizers have with the status quo. 'Why organize?' is the central question that permeates throughout this book, and Mr. Alinsky answers this question with a scathing attack on the powers that be, who are beholden to maintaining the status quo. Mr. Alinsky allows the reader to not just dream of a better America but doles out powerful, practical methods to either; A. work within the current system to effect positive change, or B. bring the system to its knees in the quest toward positive change. An absolute must read for anyone wishing to take on the status quo of poverty, injustice, hatred, and discrimination.

Want to be a student activist? Start with Alinsky
I read this book for a class in Active Citizenship in college. It was the only book in college that I would read before I went to bed for enjoyment. If you want to learn how to change your university or institution, this book is the place to start. I use so much of the book in what I now do!
