"Little Me" is a lavish autobiography of an completely fictional (but wonderfully imagined) movie actress. This book is a witty parody of every self-serving and self-deceiving memoir ever penned by a movie star (and their "ghost writer"). On the surface all is respectability, but between the lines it's bawdy and gay and very funny. We are treated to hundreds of photos, including Belle's favorite leading man "Letch Feely" and her "pals" Carstair Bagley (cum Charles Laughton) and "Helen Highwater". One of the daffiest elements is the excessive use of "quotation marks" to set off "Hollywood lingo" -- all of which is very familiar to the average movie fan. (I recently discovered this same bad habit in a movie memoir entitled "A Cast of Thousands" by Anita Loos. She wrote it in the 50s, so I'm pretty sure Dennis was parodying her use of quotations.) Patrick Dennis got is so right that he even has Belle referring to her child as "Baby Dearest" -- and this was YEARS before the tell-all book "Mommie Dearest!" Read this book out loud and you and your friends will be laughing out loud!

Alexander approaches baseball history as a historian; not a mere storyteller. This book reflects that approach. Alexander reports the feats and faults of Cobb, but doesn't try to pass judgement. Cobb's career speaks for itself (men are still chasing some of his records). However, in our age of political correctness Cobb's misbehavior speaks louder.

Alexander details a complete Cobb. For all his faults Cobb was mannered and gracious in public (most of the time), a perfect host (if he liked you) and a generous philanthropist. This is the side most other Cobb bio's whitewash.

This book proves useful as a resource about Cobb. It details the facts about his life season by season. The only way to improve the book would be to add more detail and color to some of Cobb's exploits-- but then the book would have to be about 500 pages.

I consider this to be the primere biography of Ty Cobb. However, those looking mostly for anidotes, stories and that harsh personality brought to life might want to check out Al Stumps' "Cobb". I suggest reading both to develop the full image of the Greatest innovator baseball has ever seen.

Ty cobb was the most ideal hitter in baseball before "the Babe" opened its new era.

The author described well enough for me to understand 1900-1910's players, ballparks, other circumstances around baseball.

I sincerely recommend this book to all the baseball fans.

Perfect companion to Al Stump's bio of Cobb. Alexander is more factual; Stump gives the reader a more thorough understanding of Cobb and his peculiarly ferocious personality. (The Alexander and Stump biographies portray a man who is one part Bedford Forest, one part Patton, one part Perot and one part Michael Jordan). For instance, Alexander devotes little more than one paragraph to Cobb's nervous breakdown in August, 1906. On the other hand, Stump details the inhumane hazing Cobb received from his yankee teammates in 1906 due to southern upbringing which led to Cobb's breakdown and fed his massive paranoia. Stump does a much better job on detailing Cobb's rivalry with Babe Ruth. Alexander briefly mentions the rivalry; Stump details the intense hatred Cobb felt for Ruth. For example, as player-manager of the Tigers, Cobb would often scream at the thick-lipped Ruth from the dugout, "You Nigga', Nigga' etc., etc.." However, where Stump takes many of Cobb's stories and yarns at face value, Alexander sifts through the clouds and tells the reader what is definitely true and leaves out what might be lies. Ty Cobb is the most interesting baseball player of all time though not the most important (Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente and, because of his role in free agency, Catfish Hunter were more important than Cobb). To get a real good feel of Ty Cobb, you need to read two books. Mr. Alexander's book is one of the two.

To summarize our earlier review, this is one of the most comprehensively educational works we've ever come across.

The Conspiracy X rpg is one of the coolest around, and the Aegis organisation definitely needed a source book of its own. And here it is. It has loads more stuff on Aegis, including some cool new skils 'n professions. The stuff on Aegis rocks, and the advice on operations and tactics has helped my players get further into character. All in all, an invaluable addition to any Con X player's/GM's library.

I am a student of electrical engineering and I greatly enjoyed using this text. The authors clearly put a great deal of thought into the presentation of the material. The material is laid out with every logical step clearly explained. I have never found a clearer explanation of Bode Plots or transfer functions than in this text. This book assisted me in several courses this semester. I hope the authors write more texts that I will be able to use. Excellent.

The book covers all the subjects of Electric Circuits with a very clear and simple way with excellent examples include spice examples on every subject. simple a must have book.

"Eugene Onegin" was the first major work written in Russian, helping to establish that language's illustrious literary tradition. This novel in verse brought to fame Aleksandr Pushkin, who later turned his talents from poetry on to prose fiction with such titles as "The Captain's Daughter", "The Queen of Spades", and "Dubrovskii".

Briefly, the story concerns the encounter between two landed gentry, Eugene, who is disillusioned by his former experiences of St. Petersburg, and Tatyana, a provincial girl who sees the world through her English romance poetry. Obviously, the meeting is an ugly one. The ending is left for the reader to discover, but we all get to see how pitiful Onegin really is.

This edition includes the unfinished poem, "Onegin's Journey", and the classic "The Bronze Horseman", which is famous for describing the unstoppable and cruel will of Peter the Great in modernizing Russia.

The only problem that I had was in the English translation of "Eugene Onegin". Translating a poem from one lanaguage to another, while still maintaining proper meter and rhyme is no mean feat. Nevertheless, something is lost in the delivery of the poem and unfortunately, we can appreciate only part of Pushkin's genius by reading the English translation. I'd like to learn Russian well enough to be able to read Pushkin's poetry in order to appreciate his work more fully. Well I'm working on it!

once you get in this book you get lost in depth of their characters like yevgeni onegin and tanya.I have really developed a great admiration for the write a.s.pushkin of how he played with the characters in some way ý beleive that y.onegin was himself and tanya was his one of those gales that writer flirted with them in a sensual way.

ý am pretty sure the writer had a deep sensual feeling for tanya and was trying to put her in a role at his wife's position where she was never ever had a sexual object in his real lifetime marriage with her.

ý have seen the theatrical play of this book and enjoyed very much so as ý had the pleasure of reading it.

Franny and Zooey is a wonderful novel that gives concise insight into minds of the Glass family. Salanger is brillant as he uses intellect and whit while creating the characters. It gave me a whole new outlook on the world. I recomend it to all.

My name is Will Feaver and I go to Colonel Gray High in Charlottetown PEI Canada and I would like to to talk to the athor of "Catcher In the Rye" J.D. Salinger for a school project and some serious bonus marks.

Beginning with 16th C Spanish vihuelas, the authors take a pictorial tour of the rich history of the acoustic guitar. In addition to the unbelievable number of pictures (especially of early guitars), the authors also describe innovations by many modern, independent luthiers such as Thomas Humphrey. Additionally, the reader is exposed to fine works by British luthiers. My only minor reservation with any book like this is the "scope/page" ratio...can 500 years of history be covered in 158 pages? The authors do a remarkable job covering the key historical events in the evolution of the guitar. Interested readers will find additional info in the rich bibliography and discography(!). All and all, a marvelous book for anyone interested in the history and evolution of musical instruments...both to read and admire the fine pictures.
