All Around Great
This book is well researched, well organized, and well written. It gives a complete view of the facts known about the tragically short life of one of WWI's bravest and best aviators. I recomend it highly.

Discover the facts behind the myth
This book is a fabulius read. Strip away the veneer from 'pomp and circumstance' or 'muddling through' stereotypes of England and discover where they are derived from.

Not at all dry or academic in tone, so very useful for the generalist reader interested in England.

I recommend it to anyone planning a trip there. England is a wonderful country to visit, but it is so much richer when the scales are taken from our eyes.

An Extraordinary Resource
The original Great American Negroes, published in the 1940s, is an amazing compendium of info on outstanding contemporary black americans. A great strength of this book is the variety of lives and careers it discusses. Subjects include poet Langston Hughes, conductor Dean Dixon, educator Mordecai Johnsnon, along with Marian Anderson, James Weldon Johnson and a host of others. For many years this was the best reference work of its type as an intro to these figures. The original illustrations, elegant, lively portrait drawings are beautiful. The book was later revised and expanded by a different author and the illustrations were replaced with lesser work. Overall, the first version is a real find and something of a milestone in its genre.

an extremely readable one volume history of England
After I checked out this book from my local library on eleven different occasions, my wife made a deal with the librarian to buy a more up to date English history and allow me to have this wonderful book for my own library. I have worn it out and patched it up on several occasions. This is one of the best trades(from my perspective) that our family has ever made. It is like an old friend which teaches me something new each time I read it.

Another Royal Family Soap Opera
This alternative history mystery is as charming as page turning. Taking place in the present, a different royal family (Prince Edward Victor didn't die in the 1890's and leave his fiance free to marry his brother George to later become George V and Mary)is presented with a problem. Someone is killing courtiers and knows a long hidden royal secret. The tale, told by the kings' daughter, is a clever story of celebrity. love, and danger. This is thorougly recommended. It is followed by a sequeal.

Love skills
This book is unique because it teaches concrete skills that people can use to improve their relationships. The point is that if people are responsible for themselves and their own thoughts and emotions and unilaterally accept others, they will feel happier in their relationships, be more open to improving their own weaknesses with their partner's help, influence their partners positively, and accept their own and their partner's flaws. It's probably most helpful for people who are already in committed relationships but have reached a kind of "standoff" or withdrawal from their partners, but know they still love them and want to re-connect. On the other hand, the 7 basic skills presents in this book would benefit us all and are useful in all types of relationships, from friendship to parent/child and spouse.

Lucid, Penetrating, and Dripping with Wisdom
This book, deservedly, is a classic. Although relatively short, it is chock-full of insights -- many of which anticipate the important work decades later by F.A. Hayek. Spencer's passion for freedom, and his understanding of the nature of politicized and depoliticized societies, was deep. This is an inspiring work.
