a great book!
I must confess I purchased this paperback expecting a cheesy mystery story. Was I ever surprised! Albert is a terrific writer. Although this is clearly a formula novel, he constructs everything perfectly. I loved his strategy of having Dave Garrett, the PI protagonist, go for 4 days without sleep, which does not leave the reader a convenient place to put the book down. It is non-stop action! Also I should mention that I experimented with Fastin diet pills to stay awake while studying for college exams, and I thought it was great that an author would incorporate such a powerful energizing substance in a story. Good job, Albert

1) spelling mistake found in the book(e.g. Sweeden)

A fascinating character and a remarkable twist ending
How do you prove a man is dead when his bullet-ridden car is discovered but his body is not? In Pennsylvania, you wait seven years and hope you hear nothing. But it is embarrassing if a judge finds that a man is dead after seven years only to have him pop up during the eighth. So a law firm seeking to prove that the man who owned the car is in fact dead hires lawyer-turned-investigator Dave Garrett to see what he can find out over the weekend. The case promises to be anything but ordinary when Garrett learns that the law firm turned to him after one of the more prestigious investigative firms dropped the case. Clearly, the forces at play must be pretty powerful, and it does not take long for Garrett to realize some of the forces he's up against. In Dave Garrett, author Neil Albert gives us a protagonist who is both intelligent and resourceful. But "The January Corpse," a thoroughly enjoyable mystery throughout, cannot truly be appreciated until the ending, which is reminiscent of Christie's "The Murder of Roger Akroyd" for the twist that Albert provides. Only after the mystery pays off can we truly appreciate Garrett for the complex character he is. Initially, for example, we learn that he was disbarred. Later, though, we realize why and can appreciate him all the more for it. But his reaction to the twist ending truly indicates what a wonderful character he is. "The January Corpse" provides an excellent test for those who believe they can solve any mystery where the author plays fair. Albert does play fair, but few readers will be alert enough to pick up all the clues to arrive at *precisely* the right answer. (A large part of the answer is rather obvious, but that by no means diminishes the story.) For those who prefer their mysteries to be rich in character, "The January Corpse" is a wonderful ride and will no doubt send the reader looking for the next in the series, "The February Trouble."

A light, uncomplicated mystery
Detective David Garrett and his transsexual assistant and romantic partner, Lisa, make an interesting pair as they attempt to track down Garrett's birth history. At times it is difficult to care about their obtaining the sought information. The story is a light, uncomplicated, mystery, which entertains, but does not fully engage.

Authour recreates his own life story.
Neil Albert's "monthly series" continues in its 6th entery. This time Dave Garret is set out to solve a totaly different case. He is looking for his biological parents.

The author states that this is based on his search for his birth parents and that brings a more human emotion to the story itself.

Alberts intertwining chapters of different naratives actually gives two interesting prespectives to the same story.

As the story opens we find Dave in his office with nothing to do, basicly jobless buy with a job. Until he is presued to find his father, his biological father. He sets out to California where his mother stayed during her pregnancy with her family. He hopes he will be able find the truth there but it leads to nowhere. With a twist of fate and a confession Dave is sent on the right track and you are left with a great mystery.
